We live in the
age of Infowhelm
Our Digital Output
In 2003 all the information online added up to 5 Exabytes (or 5,000,000,000 Gigabytes)
Our Digital Output
In 2009all the information online added up
to 500 Exabytes
(or 500, 000,000,000 Gigabytes)
Or 13 x the distance between the Earth and Pluto
= 10,000% increase in 6 years
2009
Digital output = 500
Exabytes
= books stacked 13 x
from the Earth to
Pluto
An increase of 10,00% in
6 years
Infowhelm
In 2015?In 2015 (If with the same increase of
10,000% in 6 years) makes 50,000 exabytes
or
1,300 x distance between the Earth and Pluto!!!
[it's probably at least triple that!]
2015
*Digital output = 50,000
Exabytes
= books stacked 1,300
x from the Earth to
Pluto
If an increase of 10,000% in
6 years
* If at the same increase of previous 6 years
Having access to so much
information
changes the skills
students need to learn.
We need Information Literacy skills (sometimes called Information
Fluency)
We need to:
• ask good questions and to search smart
• learn how to analyse and evaluate information
• determine fact from opinion
These are the Information
Literacy skills we will be
learning in these lessons
this year
