INFRASTRUCTURE, DONORS & RESETTLEMENT: DISPLACEMENT POLITICS AND
POST-AID DEVELOPMENT IN BEIRA, MOZAMBIQUE Murtah Read, PhD candidate, Utrecht University/LANDac
BACKGROUND
1
Inflows of land-related investments will likely reshape the nature of cities. These investments will trigger urban renewal, real estate and housing projects, and infrastructure development. These urban-based flows and their consequences for the urban poor are under-researched in the land rush debates. (Zoomers et al, 2016, 247)

REFLECTIONS
3
REFLECTION
• 3 donors, 3 different outcomes, not in compliance with national laws international standards or ESIA’s.
• Interventions shaped by ‘arena’ of interests, where is the incentive for inclusion?
• Urban development premised on displacement, why isn’t it addressed as such?
The city is a political artifact, not a
technical artifact, it is created by groups
that participate in the urban conflict
