One of my favorite sleep disorders is sleep paralysis.

In Korean it is known as Gawee Nulim.

Page 4: Inha University Unit 3 Public Health: Sleep. In today’s class we are going to look at how sleep disorders affect people

• The scientific explanation of sleep paralysis is simple:(1) Your brain goes into REM sleep.(2) Your body chemically shuts down your muscles so that you don’t move while you are dreaming.(3) You wake up in the middle of an REM cycle and your muscle and brains are still disconnected.

• Simple enough.

• But what’s interesting is that most people who experience this feel an evil presence in the room when this happens.

• Many people in fact claim to see a dark shape behind them when it happens.

• Nobody ever reports a positive feeling or presence when this happens.

• In cultures all around the world, people attribute this dark presence to be a demon, ghost or evil spirit that presses on a persons chest and steals their breath.

• In Korea, for example, it’s a ghost.• In Turkey, it’s a Djinni.• In Eastern Canada it’s an old hag

(evil witch).
