The Mess She Made

The girl that the protagonists friend is in love with leaves and is replaced by a person clad in black, with black paint on their face. They are a metaphor of depression and sadness. The video continues with Depression constantly around him or pressing on him. It could end with it leaving and getting over the girl. Maybe choreographed (more dramatic than fighting) fight scenes between protagonist and Depression. A shot of Depression’s black hands slowly going over the friends face. For this idea I am thinking of shots such as graphic match, tracking, birdseye and shot reverse shot. I came up with this idea by just reading the lyrics. It does seem as if the protagonist/singer is helping the friend through a breakup and telling him there are other girls out there. I like the idea of the protagonist fighting off Depression and helping his friend. I feel this idea goes against the typical idea of songs about relationships and breaking up by instead bringing a friend and getting over it rather than getting the girl back or getting a new girl. More shots could be tilts over the singer or friend to show emotion or show emotion via close ups of the actors faces.

My second idea was to have just a singer performing with a band in the video. This would make it so that he is singing the lyrics to the viewer and trying to tell them there are other fish in the sea. I would have had a lot of varied shots in this one as it focused on the performance of the band and a lot of close ups of the singer as they sang to the viewer. The mise en scene for this would be regular clothes what people would perform in and in a dark room with their instruments and just the camera and lighting. I preferred my first idea to my second as I found that a lot of people that I asked preferred narrative based music videos to performance ones within my genre. This idea is different because it uses the viewer instead of an actor within the video that is affected and this changes the whole premise of the video.
