The event was or- ganized by CIELO, the Coalition of Inland Empire Latino Organiza- tions. After a meet and greet appetizer reception in the lobby, guests made their way to the main confer- ence center to await Dr. Morales’ first formal address as president. The event was MC’d by Dr. Ernie Garcia, Dean Emeritus for the College of Education. Garcia reflected on the great strides Latinos have made in edu- cation by citing notable Latinos who paved the way for others, in- cluding the late Dr. Tomás Rivera who served as the first Latino chancellor at UC Riverside in the 80s. “Today we welcome our own Tomás,” he said of Morales. Morales began his remarks by thanking CIELO for their warm welcome, recognizing his family, including his wife Evy and sharing some of his own journey. Born in Puerto Rico, Morales’ parents migrated to the Bronx in New York. Morales said he was a product of the New York City school system and obtained a higher education through the state’s Educational Opportunity Program. He and Evy grew up in the same neighborhood in the Bronx and at- tended the same schools and then married after their freshman year in college. They are the parents of a son “Tomasito”, Amanda and Omar, and the grandparents of Is- abella Rose, Sophia Lily and Dan- ica Noel. “I am excited that I am joining a university of faculty who are emi- nently prepared academically in their respective disciplines,” Morales said. “I have been so im- pressed with the number of faculty who engage students in their re- search and the number of aca- demic departments that sponsor active learning communities. This focus on faculty-student col- laboration is one reason why CSUSB is a leader in the Califor- nia State University system in per- sistence and graduation rates of students, particularly Latino, African American and other histor- ically underrepresented students. Morales noted the importance of these accomplishments especially in the Inland Empire, a region that has the lowest percentage of col- lege graduates of any major US metropolitan area. Morales went on to say that many of our students come from families that previously believed higher ed- ucation was out of reach, and that more than 70 percent of graduating students came from families in which neither parent had a college degree and that CSUSB now has the second-highest percentage of African American and Latino stu- dents among California public uni- versities. “I believe public institutions of higher education are ‘stewards of place’ serving the public good and Cal State San Bernardino, under the leadership of the three presi- dents who have come before me, has historically done just that,” Morales continued. “It is in the DNA of CSUSB students, faculty and staff to serve others. This com- mitment, in large part, is what at- tracted me to the presidency of California State University, San Bernardino. I welcome the oppor- tunity to join the extraordinary uni- versity community in providing a quality education for our students and, indeed, in supporting the work of our faculty and staff. I have always valued the nature of my work as an educator who trans- forms lives, and so I was naturally attracted to a university that holds the same values.” IECN PHOTO COURTESY MARTHA DÍAZ ZÚNIGA-CORPORATE ARTISTRY Morales welcome reception organizers from CIELO, Coalition of Inland Empire Latino Organizations.
