Key interventions undertaken for development of Inland Waterways…

Page 7: Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI)

Initiatives taken to achieve vision

Modal share enhancement of IWT from current 2% to 2.5% by including bulk and containerised cargo

Develop 5,000 kms of IWT routes across states (India@75 as per NITI Aayog)

Enhance regional connectivity with North East India & neighbouring countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan &

Myanmar) through Eastern Waterway Connectivity – Transport Grid

Integrate IWT with Coastal Shipping and other modes

Target passenger / Cruise Tourism on waterways by encouraging private sector

Focussing on infrastructure and service gaps

Introduction of e-initiatives

Development of Vessel building, Ship Repair and Hybrid Engine.

Regional Connectivityo Vessel Demando Cruise demand for both Coastal and River

Vision: Develop a self-sustainable, economical, safe & environment friendly supplementary mode of

transport for the overall economic growth of the country

Five-year Vision

Page 8: Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI)

Cooperation in areas of imparting trainingand skill development for management ofinland navigable channels may be explored

Construction of Shallow draft cargoand passenger vessels. The vessels areto be procured by Private players /Shipping companies independently.

Catamaran and environment friendlyhybrid vessels.

Construction of Side floaters forreduction of Vessel draft.

Ship repair facilities proposed atSahibganj & Kolkata on NW-1 andJogighopa & Pandu on NW-2 which can beexplored for development in collaborationwith an Indian Partner.

Private sector participation inTerminal Management. Russian Firmsmay consider participating in the biddingprocess. Following terminals are to begiven for O&M in FY 20-21.

MMT Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh),Sahebganj (Jharkhand), Haldia (WestBengal) and Gaighat Terminal (Patna) onNW-1.

Pandu and Dhubri Terminal on NW-2. Karimganj & Badarpur on NW-16.. 9 small terminals on NW-3 (Kerala). Holistic development of waterway

Smart Hydrography development

Development of smart vessel trackingsystem, auto pilotage, safety andnavigation framework (AIS/ ENC/Beacon/ Buoys etc.)

Estimated about 2304.0 ( conservative estimate). Dolphins are present in

between Varanasi and Farakka.

Highest number being at Patna – 81.0, lowest number found at Ghazipur

being Zero- not seen.

• Behavioral changes may be relatively minor and/or brief, have thepotential to affect important behaviors such as foraging, breeding andresting. Behavioral changes for Dolphin above 177 d(B) re 1 μParespectively (Southall et al. (2007).

• Study by Kelkar (2008) into the habitat use and distribution of the GangesRiver Dolphin in the Vikramshila Gangetic River Dolphins suggested thatboat noise in the order of 160 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, with the received levelsof over 120 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m up to 500 m is not displacing dolphins. However, it is not conclusively showing that such noise levels do notimpact Dolphin behavior.

Recommendations of National Wildlife Board also have been complied and IWAI has

released Rs. 8,47,97,387 (5% of the cost of MMT Varanasi) for setting up a Trust for

de-notified the existing sanctuary and notified the 30 km stretch along both sides of

Ganga River falling in the districts of Bhadohi, Prayagraj and Mirzapur as the location

of the new Kachhua Wildlife Sanctuary.
