In Memory of
Dave LangAfter a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease fought with dignity and courage Davesadly passed away on the 16th April 2019.
Dave had lived in the village since building ‘The Farriers’ in the early 1970s, and as theyears went by our daughters Nicola and Laura grew up with Joanna Lang and Sue andDave became not just good neighbours but special friends.
It was a sad day when they moved to Wardle near Rochdale but understandable, theywanted to be nearer Joanna and son-in-law Jack who are based in the Police Force there.
And so on Thursday May 2nd 2019 we set off for Rochdale to pay our last respects toDave along with many others on a coach provided by ‘Court Good Samaritan’ which is acharitable organisation that Dave, Sue and family members had supported for a longtime doing fund raising and serving on the committee.
With few traffic problems and some commendable coach driving by Keith Warringtonwe arrived at Rochdale in good time. It was decided to celebrate the life of Dave with adrink in the aptly named ‘Cemetery Hotel’. I’m sure Dave would have approved!
The Chapel was packed and a compassionate but light-hearted service was a fittingtribute to Dave’s memory. Dave and Sue must have made an impact on the locals in theshort time they had been there as a friend and domino companion of Dave gave a lovelyeulogy and Joanna bravely read an emotional poem dedicated to the dad she adored.
All these tributes reminded me of my own special memory of Dave which was theoccasion of Dave’s 60th birthday when a good time was had by all at the Red Lion(especially Dave!!). On his birthday I altered a Men at Work roadworks sign and put iton his lawn because Dave always insisted he ‘didn’t do jobs’! On the sign the ‘DiggingDave’ is saying ‘what’s for tea Dink?’ as this was Dave’s pet name for Sue who remarkedthat most husbands who rang their wives in the afternoon was because they wanted aromantic, lovely-dovey chat! Dave was content to find out what was on the menu fortea!
Above the ‘Digging Dave’ I drew a thought bubble containing a pint of lager and adomino and walking behind him was one of the Mr Men – Mr Happy which was Sueand Joanna’s pet name for Dave. Mr Happy was proudly carrying a Manchester Citybanner and a Persimmon flag.
Page 3
This sign to me now represents the Dave Lang we know and loved. He was a loving, caring family man who would do anything for anyone. He loved a pint and a game ofdominoes and he loved his football and belovedManchester City.
When he was at work he had an unassuming pride in his job which was recognised by hisemployees Persimmon with awards and certificates and site flags for maintaining anefficient and well maintained building site. Quite an accolade for someone who ‘didn’tdo jobs’!!!
I have huge admiration for the way Dave faced his illness and for Sue, Joanna and thefamily and friends who rallied round Dave in difficult times. Also, the SpringhillHospice who looked after Dave with donations of £1800 being raised for them. Awonderful gesture.
As we left the service I felt that it was Dave who was saying farewell to us in his ownspecial way. If you ever asked Dave ‘What you doing today Dave?’ he would reply with acheeky grin and laugh ‘Well I’ve got places to go, people to see and things to do’.
TheWake at Sue and Dave’s local The Topham Tavern was a final tribute to Dave as weall reminisced about a lovely man who will be sadly missed.
RIP Dave Lang.
Ian Stafford and Family.

Our Grade 1 listed historic church has been an integral part of village life since the13th century. The church has a Norman porch and nave and 14th century chancel.Fragments of early stained glass can be found in the sanctuary window including theKniveton family coat of arms.
Many in our village value and appreciate the importance of the church. We enjoy attendingservices at Christmas, Easter and Harvest. We are glad that it is available for importantfamily occasions such as weddings, christenings and funerals. Loved ones are buried in thechurchyard.
But maintaining a historic building is costly. Over the last 5 years the Kniveton PCC hasspent more than £13,000 on the maintenance and upkeep of the building including over£6,000 on repairs to the spire.
Every 5 years the diocese is required to commission an independent report on the conditionof the building and the churchyard and our recent report highlights urgent work that needsto be addressed including applying solar protective paint to protect the ‘temporary’ roofcovering, and repointing the chancel’s east gable and the four exposed corner parapet walls ofthe nave. This work must be completed within 12-18 months, and there is more workrequired before the next report is due.
The St Michael and All Angels patronage scheme enables members of the community tocontribute to the upkeep of our beautiful church.
All funds raised will be strictly limited for use on the church building and surroundingchurchyard. Theywill not be used for 'worship activities'.
Receiving financial help from the whole community will greatly help in keeping the churchopen for generations to come.
All donations to the patronage scheme are gratefully received, but regular giving is especiallyuseful as it allows us to plan more effectively.
If you wish to help us preserve this important village asset please contribute what you can. Asuggested donation of £5 per month, with more if you are able, would be most helpful.
If you would like further information please contact Fiona Brown on 346594.

WIIt was our Annual General Meeting in April so we didn't have a speaker as there was alot of business to discuss, but we did have sweet and savoury dishes with drinks to finishoff the evening.
It was noted that our Spring Clean in March had culminated in 20 bags of rubbishcollected around the village.
Three of our members attended the Dovedale group meeting in April where the speakerwas Paul Newsham, a retired police forensic scientist. The title of his talk was Six Greatfictional Detectives. Put to the vote, Vera came top! It was a very entertaining evening.
The speaker for our May meeting was DavidTempleman. He told us of the life of Arbella, thegranddaughter of Bess of Hardwick. She had a sadlife really, both her parents had died by the time shewas 6, so Bess ant her Uncle and Aunt were herguardians. By the time she reached her teens, she wasalways under close supervision, or house arrest, dueto the fact that she was of royal blood and as entitledto the crown as James 1st if Elizabeth was to die. Shewas also very close to Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex,Queen Elizabeth's favourite man. All the more reasonto keep her away from Court.
David told us so much more of her life and hisaccount kept us spellbound.
David is a volunteer at Sheffield Manor Lodge where Arbella spent much of her youth. We all agreed it would be a good place to visit.
Our meetings are always the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm and we welcomeany newcomers. Give it a try and see what you think, no pressure! Just ring Susan on01335 348442 or Pam on 01335 345716 if you want to know more.
Best wishes,
Kath, KnivetonWI
