have to wait until you graduate to get real, hands-on experience. We make sure that

you have that opportunity the moment you walk on campus because we know that

students learn best by doing.

Pacific students are studying the environment by measuring water quality on the San Joaquin Delta. They are interning with legislators at the state capitol. They

are creating 3D models in an experimental space called “The Cube.”

Page 7: INNOVATE YOUR FUTURE€¦ · INNOVATE YOUR FUTURE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDEBOOK 2020 Undergraduate Programs Stockton, California

Our campus is a diverse and vibrant community with dozens of social and professional organizations that celebrate and honor the cultures, heritages and beliefs of our students, faculty and staff. One of the most ethnically diverse universities in the United States, Pacific brings together students from all walks of life.

The heart of Pacific life is the Don and Karen DeRosa University Center, which students and staff affectionately refer to as “the DUC.” Here, you’ll find extensive dining options, featuring everything from vegan/vegetarian fare to home-style favorites in our Marketplace; fresh-brewed coffee in the Calaveras Coffee House and snacks and beverages in The Lair, Pacific’s on-campus pub. Whether you’re engaged in a fierce video game tournament in the Game Room, watching the latest sporting events and news on the screens throughout the University Center or relaxing on the lawn with friends, Pacific has a space that’s right for you.

Pacific students are engaged. They’re asking questions, finding answers and having fun along the way.

José Hernández, ’85 ASTRONAUT

The son of migrant farm workers, José Hernández went from dreaming under the stars to actually reaching them. The 1985 Pacific graduate and NASA astronaut was one of seven crew members aboard the Discovery space shuttle when it was launched on August 28, 2009. Hernández served as a flight engineer and operated the shuttle’s robotic arm. Born in French Camp and raised in Stockton, José attended Pacific through the Community Involvement Program (CIP), a scholarship program for underrepresented students. Here, he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He later received a master’s degree in the same field from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Arif Alvi, ’84PRESIDENT OF PAKISTAN

Dr. Arif Alvi was elected Pakistan’s 13th president on Sept. 4, 2018. One of the founding members of the ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and an ally of Prime Minister Imran Khan, Dr. Alvi is also a dentist and orthodontist who graduated from the Dugoni School of Dentistry’s Orthodontics program in 1984. In addition to his involvement in politics, Dr. Alvi has served the profession of oral health care in numerous ways. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1997. He is a past president of the Pakistan Dental Association and was the primary author of the association’s constitution.

Mary Ann Gomez Orta, ’89 PRESIDENT AND CEO

An advocate for Hispanic students as successful world leaders, Mary Ann Gomez Orta is president and CEO of the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI). A colorful background in fields from public relations to teaching has led her to positions such as corporate marketing manager with Coors Brewing Company and McDonald’s Corporation. Gomez Orta also serves as board member and co-chair on multiple community foundations and associations.

Nasser Saleh, ’18 RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

“If he performed well in school, he could get scholarships to help pay for college” — words of a middle school teacher that motivated young Nasser Saleh to be a first-generation graduate in his family of Lebanese immigrants. He embarked on an educational journey when accepted into Pacific’s School of Engineering and was selected as a Powell Scholar. His hard work paid off, and he soon learned of new passions in a field where he could directly improve the health of patients. Nasser now helps design heart valve therapies that improve and save lives.

Martin Burt, ’80FOUNDER & CEO

Being a social entrepreneur, Martin Burt did not shy away from Paraguay, one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Burt took it into his own hands when developing Fundación Paraguaya, a nonprofit organization founded in 1985. Through this organization, innovative and sustainable solutions are implemented to eliminate poverty and provide “education that pays for itself,” allowing students to find agricultural jobs upon graduation, create small enterprises or enter university. Martin Burt continued on to become Paraguay’s Vice-Minister of Commerce, Mayor of Asunción and was elected twice as the President of the Paraguayan-American Chamber of Commerce.

Becky Straw, ’03 CO-FOUNDER AND CEO

Since her Pacific graduation, Becky Straw has taken the nonprofit world by storm, aiding in the launch of Charity: Water and now serving as cofounder and CEO of The Adventure Project. This initiative offers resources to underdeveloped communities, empowering individuals to succeed in entrepreneurship and promote economic growth and sustainability. Straw has also consulted for UNICEF.

No animal left behind.ERIC, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATE

Eric, a 2017 mechanical engineering graduate, was inspired by his own dog’s physical condition to change the life outcome for other animals and pets. Pogo, Eric’s beloved pup, was born with a deformed front leg. As his senior project, Eric created a 3D-scanned prosthetic leg for Pogo, complete with an adjustable spring, paw structure and paw pad. Not only did this increase Pogo’s quality of life, it cost only $115 to create compared to the conventional $4,500, making this an accessible option for families with animals who require special care.

Following the beat of his own heart.NASSER, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Attending college was a lifelong dream for Nasser. The son of Lebanese immigrants, he is the first in his family to get a college education. Through hard work and a commitment to his studies, Nasser was accepted to Pacific’s SOECS as a Powell Scholar.

During his time at Pacific, Nasser worked on a Powell Scholar project developing a microgreen growing system that helps communities suffering from drought grow produce during the winter. He also completed a cooperative education internship with Edwards Lifesciences and, after graduating, returned to work there as a Research and Development Engineer, where he helps design heart valve therapies that save lives.

“The education I received and experience I gained at Pacific helped me discover a passion that I did not know existed, in a field where I can directly improve people’s lives. I dream of someday pointing to someone’s heart and knowing that I worked on the device that keeps it beating.”

HousingUniversity of the Pacific is a residential university. Most of its students live on campus in residence halls operated by the university’s Residential Life and Housing Office. Although most residence halls are coeducational (for both men and women), students live in residence halls with roommates of the same gender. The university also has facilities exclusively for women. The university requires all first-year and second-year students to live in university housing. Exceptions may be made for those living with their parent(s) or for those who request to live off campus for medical or religious reasons. The university has limited facilities for married students.

DiningPacific offers a variety of dining options through different plans and facilities, including the Marketplace (the main dining hall), the Lair, Calaveras Coffee House, Davey Café, Health Sciences Café, the Grove and the E.A.T. gourmet food truck. Each facility features a variety of menus, which include options such as salads, home-style soups, halal items, a wide selection of entrées and vegetables, freshly baked desserts and beverages. At least one vegetarian entree is featured at each meal.

All students living on campus are required to participate in a meal plan. Instead of having a limited number of meals per day or year, you have the freedom to use Dining Points to buy food that you want to eat, whenever and wherever you are hungry. The Resident Dining Account works like a debit card, which you load with prepaid funds at the beginning of each semester.
