About ROLIC
Rolic
Rolic Technologies is an innovative Swiss high-tech company head-quartered in Allschwil in the Basel area, with locations in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and Shanghai, China. Rolic Technologies modifies surfaces on a nano scale with polarized light to achieve unique optical effects and to manage light. Rolic Technologies sets industry standards for LCD TVs, optical films, forgery-proof security devices and efficient OLED lighting products with its unique, cutting-edge technology made in Switzerland.
The roots of Rolic Technologies date back to 1970 and lie in the liquid crystal laboratories of the Swiss health care company Roche. Since 1996, Rolic has been privately owned and has successfully gained footholds in the international marketplace. Highly skilled staff and leading scientists continually develop, refine and extend Rolic proprie-tary LCMO (Light Controlled Molecular Orientation) core technology.
Rolic Technologies is a renowned photo alignment technology leader and material provider with strong presence in the display and security markets, now building a third profitable business in electronics. Its aim is to generate high added value for its customers and to lay the foundation for future-oriented leading-edge innovations that will shape the technological environment sustainably.

NOVEL pRODuCTS By THE ALIgNMENT OF MOLECuLES
In a photographic process the exposure of light through a mask is causing black and white features onto a photographic film. In a simi-lar way polarized light can generate in the exposed areas of a photo-sensitive LCMO layer precisely aligned molecules. In the unexposed areas, however, the light-sensitive molecules remain unchanged in a randomly order. Light controlled molecular orientation (LCMO) converts initially randomly oriented photosensitive molecules into an ensemble of aligned molecules according the polarization direction of the used exposure light. New material properties can be achieved by the controlled alignment of molecules. Novel products become feasible by applying the LCMO technology, which could not be produced with existing methods be fore. Today the light controlled orientation of molecules on a nano scale is an established technology applied for large-volume production of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), optical films for 3D and optical security devices on bank notes and identification documents. As the inventor and pioneer of the LCMO technology Rolic holds today more than 600 patents. At least 15 % of its annual turnover the company is reinvesting in material research to extend the LCMO technology with novel alignment materials and extending optical, conductive, semi-conductive properties. Rolic’s application develop-ment and engineering teams are continuously supporting the indus-trial technology leaders in their development of novel flexible light, display, and solar panels with customized process schemes and new materials.

Rolic® LCMO-LCD
At the end of 2008 the industrial fabrication of brilliant and energy-saving LCD flat screens, based on our revolutionary LCMO technol ogy, began. Rolic first licensed this technology to the Japanese elec tronics corporation Sharp. Since then millions of LCD televisions have been produced by leading manufacturers in Asia.
A new standard in the LCD industryRolic® LCMO-LCD is the new standard with regard to cost-effective-ness, quality and energy consumption of LCD screens and provides the following advantages:
Advantages in the manufacturing process– The production is carried out efficiently and without mechanical
manipulation– A smaller number of process steps and a lower reject rate improve
the cost structure significantly (low total cost of ownership)– The larger the fabricated panels are, the greater is the advanta-
geous effect of Rolic® LCMO technology
Advantages for the user– Rapid image formation, ideal for sports, action movies, and games– High contrast for optimum image quality and brilliance– Extremely low energy consumption

intelligent secuRity solutions foR banknotes and secuRity documents
Rolic’s LCMO technology and materials can be applied for the crea-tion of optical security elements to protect banknotes and security documents. The elements are easy to recognize and verify, whilst at the same time, they are both extremely difficult to imitate and highly resistant to forgery. Rolic sells and develops customized state-of-the-art security solu-tions to central banks and security printing companies.

fascinating optical effects on flat, cuRved, solid oR flexible substRates
Optical films are used in a large range of applications in modern life. These include optical filters for digital cameras, anti-reflection films in OLED and LCD mobile phones, optical layers in projectors, and compensation, wide-angle- and 3D-converter films for LCD displays. LCMO provides a wide range of technical options allowing various industrial applications with cost-effective fabrication methods. Rolic’s LCMO technology enables the incorporation of specific micropatterns into an optical film.
Rolic LCMO-3D was the first optical 3D application in mass produc-tion generating 3D effects for displays. It was introduced 2003 by Arisawa in Japan and has since then established itself as new industry standard for 3D displays. Among others, it is offered by Lg Electronics as Lg Cinema 3D.
The brilliance of displays is significantly reduced by the reflection of sun light. Rolic provides customized LCMO materials for the indus-trial fabrication of anti-reflection films. Such films are applied in OLED and LCD handheld devices, such as modern smartphones.

extended lifetime and efficiency
Modern electronics such as in OLED and photovoltaic (pV) devices are often based on organic semiconductor materials. The energy efficiency and the lifetime of such devices rely strongly on an efficient protection against water and oxygen and the light extraction properties of the encapsulation ma-terials.The application of Rolic’s barrier film solutions is combining light extraction and lifetime extension with a cost-effective industrial process. Rolic also offers the key materials for direct TFE (thin-film encapsulation). The 2014 introduced light panel (philips Lumiblade Brite FL300 and FL300L) is demonstrating more than 10 000 h lifetime along with the world’s brightest OLED light panels of 300 lumen.Rolic is selling and customizing encapsulation solutions with the industrial technology leaders in OLED and photovoltaic.

kaRl nicklaus the visionaRy
Karl Nicklaus manifested his entrepreneurial talent already as a young man. He collected broken radios, repaired them and sold them at a profit. After completing an apprentice-ship as an electrical engineer, he continued his engineering training. He familiarized himself with semiconductor tech-nology and microelectronics. In 1968, Nicklaus founded the company Esec and developed machines for positioning and wiring electrical chips. Within 30 years Esec became a suc-cessful company with more than 1000 employees. In 2000, Karl Nicklaus sold his shares in Esec. Since then he has been acting as business angel and investor for various Swiss tech-nology companies who satisfy his vision, which is to create environmentally friendly products using the minimum of materials and energy, and offering outstanding benefits to customers. One of his major commitments is Rolic.
in 2012, the university of basel bestowed karl nicklaus with an honorary doctor title for his overall technological commitment.

ROLIC IS VISIONARy
Rapidly changing requirements in the technology sectors of display, electronics and optics, coupled with the widespread production of counterfeit goods call for novel products with exceptional benefits, cost efficiency and fast development cycles. A key element of Rolic’s corporate strategy is therefore the constant search for high-tech, novel applications for Rolic’s LCMO technology. In order to do this successfully and to generate added value for the customers with resource-saving products, Rolic needs the ideal conditions in which to operate. Rolic creates them by generating a high level of added value, ensuring process-driven quality management and applying consistent financial, trademark and patent policies. Furthermore, Rolic recruits the best employees and renowned scientists. The strong presence and solid reputation in the display, optical film and security market are an honour and a duty. Rolic can’t afford to rest on its laurels. Instead, Rolic keeps pace with developments and ad-opts a forward-thinking approach. As a result, Rolic identifies trends at an early stage and steers toward them. In this way, it creates the best possible conditions for future innovations that will shape the technological environment, generate new growth and secure the long-term future of Rolic.
