Status Professional application of wearable AR well under way
• Used today in industry e.g. in training, maintenance & manufacturing (e.g., DHL, Volkswagen, BMW, EADS)
• EU system developpers at forefront, e.g., Ubimax (DE), Augmented Automation (DE), Xmreality (SE)
Broader Applications starting for « consumer niches» like sports
• First products e.g. by Everysight (IL), o-synce (DE), eyewear & sport manufacturers will follow this trend
• EU companies design-in’s for wearable AR, e.g. Microoled (FR), Savimex (FR), ST (FR), Optinvent (FR), Zeiss (D)
Next-Generation featuring compact & stylish design, enhanced functionality & ergonomics for citizens
• Strong end user industry: Sport & lifestyle (e.g., Adidas, Puma,…), health & well-being, connectivity, medical, etc.
• Innovative Systems & Components for AR: backplane IC, low power wireless chipsets, sensors, compact AR optics or smartglass products, advanced packaging
• top-level research on visualisation, connectivity (5G, NB-IoT,…), advanced user-interfaces

Objective: Enable wider adoption of personal connected near-eye/in-eye augmented-reality (AR) systems from professionals towards citizens
- Establishing innovation consortia (industry & academics) along the entire value chain, from components and subsystems to end products and services
- Development of innovative components and systems: - HW and SW solutions for ultra-low power architectures, sensing,
connectivity, user interaction, localization, scene recognition, etc. - Optics and microdisplays (see-through, variable focus planes, light
field,…)- Systems for anytime secure use, non-obtrusive look-and-feel
wearable visual information
- Verification of application scenarios in Living Labs / public environments
- Service-focused business models in lifestyle, health, sports, social networks, education, autonomous driving, Smart Home, entertainment

Expected impact:
- Help EU start-up’s, SMEs and large enterprises to continue to stay on forefront of related photonic components and applications- Near/in-eye optics, microdisplays, materials, sensors,
semiconductors
- Strengthening domestic manufacture of optical & semiconductor components, as well as systems
- Allow system integrators and end-users in wearable and IoT markets, e.g. from telecom, medical, sports, or eyewear industry, to benefit from this rapidly growing market
- set high-level standards for data security and privacy
- Addresses societal challenges- security and privacy awareness for citizens (open yet safe society)- personal health (remote doctor, sensory impaired, emergency assist)- mobility (smart transportation, personal travel advice via crowd data)
UWEAR Objectives & Main Tasks
Demonstrate the performance of wearable, microdisplay based visualization systems in applications through pilot-studies by end-users Consumer: Sports (cycling, skiing, running,…), personal health Professional: Industry 4.0, maintenance, training, logistics, Medical Early Pilot study in year 1 based on integration of existing wearable platform
(MICROOLED)
Development of an innovative wearable platform and integration into end-user platforms taking into account the results of the pilot-studies and other end-user requirements Main target is high acceptance by the end-users through very compact & lightweight
design, very low power, advanced interactivity, good legibility (indoor – outdoor)
Second Pilot study in year 3 based on integration of the new wearable platform into end-user systems
End-users: SEARCHING: Consumer: Sport (Cycling, Running, Ski, Diving,…), Health & Well-being, Tourism,… SEARCHING: Industrial maintenance, logistics, training, Automotive, Medical,…
H/W and S/W providers, system integration MICROOLED (FR): connected wearable monitor platform LIMBAK (ES): AR optics SEARCHING: user interaction, system integration
Development Fraunhofer FEP (DE): ultra-low power microdisplay backplane architecture, bi-directional devices,
OLED micro-patterning
