What is an Innovation Network?

An innovation network is a membership-based online network or community that builds an expansive or regional-wide geographic advantage using a series of interconnected and free online resources (including other regional innovation networks) in a specific industry or focused around a specific area of expertise.

What is the MIN and why is it unique? How is it more than a website?1.Established a Network Business Model – an applied financial sustainability model for the network which scales to a “mesh” network

2.Based the Playbook on this model and best practices

The MIN network is free to manufacturers and offers invaluable resources, including:

•A wealth of research and information related to specific fields and sectors of manufacturing

•Experts immersed in technology, trade, regulatory compliance, marketing, finance, research and innovation

•An online marketplace to buy and sell goods and services; promote business activities; find employees via a job board; discover/develop new partnerships

•Online forums, blogs and a growing professional network of manufacturers and experts for improved collaboration, problem solving and ideation

What was the driving need to create this network? Why was it started? From 2002-2006, over 6,900 manufacturing jobs were lost across a wide range of industries in the Waterloo Region representing:

• 10% decline in all manufacturing jobs

• $357 million less in annual payroll spending

• $72 million lost in annual federal and provincial income taxes

• $18 million lost in annual contributions to CPP and EI programs

In response to this decline in the local manufacturing industry, the City of Kitchener conducted Corporate Visitation Programs and surveyed over 150 manufacturers in the community. Manufacturers identified the lack of innovation, collaboration and knowledge sharing as key and potentially industry-threatening issues.

With these issues top of mind, the City of Kitchener (lead), along with the other cities and townships, partnered with IGLOO Inc. (a local technology company) to build an online Manufacturing Innovation Network in the fall of 2007 as a proof of concept.

Who is the intended audience of the MIN? Who are the key stakeholders and who are the users?

The Manufacturing Innovation network will serve to connect manufacturers, partners, government agencies, academic institutions and other stakeholder groups using digital technology to create a more responsive and globally competitive manufacturing community through improved collaboration, knowledge sharing and leading edge innovations.

3. Government officials

4. Academics and researchers

There are a maximum of 20 seats available on the Advisory Board per year (5 seats per sector) which are voted on by past members. Each seat on the board costs $5,000 per year and these funds are used to promote, educate and assist local manufacturing initiatives in the Waterloo Region.
