Impact of COVID on current IPCE system

Abrupt move to digital/online education for some content Conferences, meetings

Increased need for Just-in-Time education Organization, unit level

Multiple competing resources

Significant reduction in revenue related to conferences

Opportunity to engage more stakeholders in digital/online education Less dependent on travel Less expensive Expand network across professions

Interprofessional CE

Opportunity to increase engagement across professions

Increased stress on health care professionals • Personal health and safety• Increased feeling of burnout

Opportunity to retool and reskill to achieve common mission• “mass casualty”

Potential to negatively impact collaboration• Co-location opportunities hampered

Opportunity to demonstrate the value of IPCE in meeting department, organizational, professional strategic goals

What does the future of IPCE look like?

• Critical to achieve organizational success and must be tied to organization strategic goals

• Increased focus on decreasing silos to achieve common goals

• Opportunity to better align and close the education/practice gap – increased in situ education to meet needs at point of care

• Delivered across multiple platforms with wider engagement across professions

• Must be cost-effective and outcomes-driven

• Will require upskilling of faculty from uniprofessional to interprofessional

Discussion Groups

What have you learned during COVID that you will retain as a component of your IPCE program? (15 minutes)

Have you/how have you leveraged IPCE to meet surge capacity?

Team during disruption RE: telehealth – how did you (could you) educate the team for telehealth?

How do you reevaluate roles and responsibilities against provider types?

From the list of possible options, please share which of these most closely represents the challenge that you primarily face with respect to addressing diversity in IPCE:

1. Unclear about what diversity *really* means2. Lack of institutional support &/or resources3. Unsure how to address diversity based on our programs

Quick poll

Page 17: Innovation Workshop Day 1 Summit... · •Pre-work for this summit: ... understanding of, and willingness to learn . about. and . from. those from other contexts, populations, communities

Value of addressing diversity

• First, we need to understand what is meant by diversity:“It is, within the realm of psychology…most often associated with a recognition of a range of identities and personal attributes, across the population of individuals inhabiting a particular setting or environment…” (APA Multicultural Guidelines, 2017)

• Appreciation for, understanding of, and willingness to learn about and from those from other contexts, populations, communities

• This ethos is at the heart of IPCE – by the team, for the team

Page 18: Innovation Workshop Day 1 Summit... · •Pre-work for this summit: ... understanding of, and willingness to learn . about. and . from. those from other contexts, populations, communities

What IS and IS NOT sufficient

• What is NOT sufficient for addressing and incorporating diversity• Tickbox exercises

• Anti-discrimination policies

• Templated or copy-paste responses

• Affirmations *that* diversity is being met

• Statements of importance and strivings/aspirations

• What IS• Higher-level, thoughtful consideration

• Systematic processes of *how* to address and incorporate diversity

• Integrated procedures that include program planning committee

Page 19: Innovation Workshop Day 1 Summit... · •Pre-work for this summit: ... understanding of, and willingness to learn . about. and . from. those from other contexts, populations, communities

Challenges to addressing diversity

• Level and type of motivation

• Adaptability / conduciveness of material

• Systems and structures

• Resources

Worksheet

Instructions: Think of a scenario or question that you would like to work through related to addressing diversity in IPCE. This scenario/question may either be based on your poll selection, or – if you prefer – a scenario or question related to one of the other two poll selections (or, something that does not fit in any of the 3 poll selections). My scenario/issue/question:

What is necessary AND sufficient for addressing diversity in IPCE?

What are some challenges to addressing diversity? What related opportunities might there be?

What are some ideas, approaches, and strategies for addressing diversity in IPCE?

_______________________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Discussion prompts/questions:

The following prompts/questions are designed to stimulate learning and action – please consider the following prompts with respect to your poll selection (or the area which most closely resembles your identified scenario):

1. Take a moment to think about what diversity means to you. How might this influence your role and action plan for addressing diversity in IPCE programming?

_________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

2. Consider the systems and structures in which you currently operate. Who could you reach out to for increased support and/or resources for addressing diversity? If you have not yet been able to secure support and/or resources, what are 2 or 3 things that you could do differently to obtain or leverage support/resources?

_________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

3. Think of an example program that probably *could* be designed to better address and incorporate diversity. Reflecting on good practice shared thus far in this program, identify at least 1 way that you might go about revising that program – consider both instructor and content development.

Why add Commendation as an option?

In response to JA providers request to:• promote the value of interprofessional continuing

education (IPCE),• encourage the continued evolution of IPCE

programs,• reward providers that implement exemplary

practices and generate meaningful outcomes, and• provide a roadmap for peers about where and

how IPCE can have an impact!

Applying for Commendation is optional.

Eligibility & Recognition

Eligibility: Organizations that are…

➢ currently jointly accredited

➢ or seeking initial joint accreditation and have been previously accredited by at least one of the following accrediting bodies: ACCME, ACPE, or ANCC.

Recognition: Providers that successfully achieve Joint Accreditation with Commendation will be awarded a six-year accreditation term.

Page 31: Innovation Workshop Day 1 Summit... · •Pre-work for this summit: ... understanding of, and willingness to learn . about. and . from. those from other contexts, populations, communities

#JALeadership2020 #10YearsofJA

Implementation

• Providers submitting their “intent to apply” for initial or

reaccreditation on or after June 1, 2020 will be eligible to seek Joint Accreditation with Commendation.

• Providers receiving joint accreditation decisions through 2020 will continue to be eligible to receive a term of six years if compliance is demonstrated for the current JAC 1-13.

• First Commendation decisions expected in July 2021 and after.

The Menu Approach

✓ Compliance with JAC 1–12 and✓ 7 of the 13 Criteria

• creates flexibility

• reflects the diversity of the

IPCE community

• offers a pathway for all provider

types to achieve commendation

Determining Compliance

• Activity-based (frequency) vs program-based (diversity) standards

• Sliding scale to accommodate IPCE programs of different sizes• Approaches for demonstrating compliance include:

o Attestationso Submitting evidence at review (It may be possible to meet multiple

Criteria with one activity)

o Examples and descriptions

Breakout Group Exercise (20 minutes)

Share: Has your organization decided to seek Joint Accreditation with Commendation?

If yes, how are you approaching it and which criteria will you aim to meet? If no, why not? What barriers do you perceive?

Discuss: Which three criteria from the Commendation menu do you think would most positively impact your organization’s approach to IPCE

and/or your overall program of continuing education?

Next Steps: Identify two or three next steps that you could take to achieve those criteria and/or remove barriers to seeking Commendation.

The 'transformative value' of IPCE & Joint Accreditation for our organization can be seen in the following changes …

• culture change – including/expanding the team in planning CE activities• Streamlined workflow process in collaboration with professions• Increased relevant discussions and engagement with the entire care team on the

advancements in oncology medicine• robust and diverse outcomes

• brings the whole healthcare team to the table to help deliver optimum patient care• increased collaboration to develop interprofessional learning activities• innovation in team-based training for high value care: the way we plan and create educational

activities• a holistic approach to patient-centered care due to improved communication pathways

amongst health care team members and higher regard for each clinician's contribution to patient care

• the relationship with the social worker profession has strengthened teamwork practices and IPCE culture

• We are no longer implementing silo and compartmentalized education, we are producing all hands-on-deck, quality, and purposeful education that lead to better teamwork and improved outcomes.
