Renewable energy production potential

• Hydraulic energy : limited to own use (else competition with large-scale-hydropower-plant)

• Solar energy : place available on control building roof

• Wind energy : no place available for wind mills (also: valley site)

• Ships from Charleroi to Brussels go first “upstream” through 3 locks, afterwards

“downstream”.

• Each locking operation means water loss.

• Natural water sources (rainfall) mostly insufficient to cover for water losses >

pumping needed for recycling.

• In future:

- New locks on each site, for class Va vessels (2000 tonnes, 112,5 * 12,5 m)

- more shipping > more water losses

- Climate change > less rainfall in summer > even more pumping needed

• Hydrological study results:

- Separate turbines : not economical

• Solution :

- Reversible installation : on each site, 1 pump will function also as a turbine

In future : Archimedes - screws

+ Optimal pump capacity (higher efficiency)

+ Less sensible to dirty water and debris

+ Less maintenance needed

+ Fish-friendly

+ Reversible (pump- and turbine – functions)

- Higher investment for civil works (transformation of building)
