INNSBRUCK TO BOLZANO - SELF GUIDED CYCLING HOLIDAY
Snow capped mountains, glittering lakes and rich aromas will overload the senses as
you cycle the Adige Cycle Path through South Tyrol from Innsbruck in Austria to
Bolzano in Italy. Lakes, mountains and lush green valleys combine to deliver wonderful
cycling through the Alps of the South Tyrol.
Beginning in Innsbruck you will cycle on bike paths through little villages and market towns to
Imst, stopping in Stams to visit the Baroque Cistercian convent. Continue with a transfer to
Reschenpass mountain pass, leaving you with only 100m of climbing before a glorious 1200m
descent to Lake Reshensee. The submerged village of Graun has hidden beneath the Lake
since 1950, with only the steeple of the 14th century church piercing the surface.
Spending two nights in Merano you have the opportunity to cycle through the picturesque
Passeiertal Valley before heading onwards to the wine regions along the South Tyrolean Wine
Road. With rich green orchards and vineyards lining the route you will have ample opportunity
to enjoy the local produce.
Finally your trip ends in Bolzano where you may decide to spend an extra day or two visiting
the many sights. The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology where 5300 year old Otzi the
Iceman is displayed is of particular interest.
Our Innsbruck to Bolzano cycling tour includes 7 nights accommodation in 3* hotels on bed
and breakfast basis, door to door bag transfers, a detailed information pack, route notes and
maps. Bike hire is available as an optional extra and emergency support is of course included.

Cycling 1200m downhill from Reschenpass after a bus takes you 100m from the top.

IS IT FOR ME?
Pristine lakes and glorious mountains com-
bined with vineyards and orchards, this trip
is a photographers dream. Quiet bike paths
and roads which are predominantly flat or
downhill make for gentle cycling days, apart
from the odd short uphill.
Cycling Days: 6
Nights: 7 Days: 8
Grade: Moderate
Day 1
Arrival in Innsbruck
After your welcome briefing and bike fitting you
have the rest of the day to explore the provincial
capital of Tyrol, Innsbruck. Meet the animals
indigenous to the Alps at Alpen Zoo the highest
zoo in Europe. Enjoy dinner overlooking
Innsbruck at the top of Bergisel Ski Jump. Also
highly recommended is a visit to Innsbruck’s
famous old town with its City Tower and its
“Golden Roof”.
Overnight: Innsbruck
Day 2
Cycle to Imst - 65km/40m
Setting off to Imst you will pedal on the former
towpath along the River Inn, at the foot of
Martinswand a popular cliff face with climbers.
After cycling through little Austrian villages and
market towns you will arrive Stams where you
can visit the Baroque Monastery.
Continuing your tour you will cycle through
Haiming before arriving in Imst, the “Merano of
North Tyrol”. If you arrive in Imst with a couple of
hours to spare there is a popular and lovely hike
to Rosegarden Gorge. The entrance to the gorge
is only minutes from the city centre.
Overnight: Imst
Day 3
Cycle to Burgeis/Mals - 50km/31m
Continuing your cycle along the River Inn, you
pass the Zams monastery on the way to
Landeck. A bus will then take you 40km to
Nauders where you will cycle less than 100
metres in altitude uphill to the Reschen pass.
From here it is downhill the whole way to Lake
Reschensee just over the Italian border.
Lake Reschensee has a fascinating history and
is the largest lake in South Tyrol. Despite the
best efforts by the village of Graun residents the
lake was created in 1950 by the unification of two
smaller lakes. In doing so the village of Graun
was submerged, only the steeple of the 14th
century church tower still rises above the
surface. Legend says that the bells still ring out
on cold winter nights.
Continue on following minor roads to Mals or to
Burgeis at the foot of the 12th century
Benedictine Monastery of Marienberg, which
boasts the highest abbey in Europe at 1,340m.
Romanesque frescos, recently discovered in the
crypt, are amongst the best preserved in Europe.
Overnight: Burgeis or Mals
Day 4
Cycle to Merano - 65km/40m
Your day starts with a trip to Glurns with its
perfectly preserved medieval city walls
surrounding its 876 residents. Then, you will
cycle via the Montani ruins, through Schlanders,
down to Merano passing Reinhold Messner’s
Juval Castle on the way. Bought in the 1970s by
the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner, the
castle houses a museum dedicated to the ’Magic
of the Mountain’ and has several fine art
collections
Impressive views of the Italian South Provinces
highest mountain, The Ortler, and the second
highest mountain pass in the Alps, Stelvio Pass,
grace todays landscape. The Venosta train
operates between Mals and Merano if you would
like to take the train for this part of your journey.
Overnight: Merano
Day 5
Cycle round Passeiertal– 40km/25m
Today you can cycle into the Passeier Valley (or
Passeiertal) to the Sandwirt inn, birthplace of
Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. If you
wish a short break from cycling the 6km
Tappeiner trail offers a pleasant walk with some
spectacular views over Merano.
Overnight: Merano
Day 6
Cycle to Kaltern/Tramin/Auer -
45-50km/28-31m
After leaving Merano you will arrive shortly at the
little village of Lana. Take some time to visit the
local church to witness the elaborately carved
Schnatterpeck Altar. On your way to Lake
Kaltersee you will cycle along the South Tyrolean
Wine Road and through many vineyards and
orchards. You will also pass several castles and
ruins but none as impressive as the imposing
Hocheppan Castle and St Pauls “Cathedral in the
Country”.
Tonight you will stay in one of the cosy wine
towns of Kaltern, Tramin or Auer.
Overnight: Kaltern, Tramin or Auer.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Day 7
Cycle to Bolzano - 35km/22m
Leaving the charming wine towns behind you can
choose flat paths through the Adige valley or
take the alternative more scenic but more
demanding route via the stunning Montiggler
lake. Finally you cycle past the Prince of Tyrol’s
fortress, Sigmundskron Castle, with its 5m thick
walls before arriving into Bolzano.
Overnight: Bolzano
Day 8
Onward Travel
Bolzano is a lovely place to spend an extra night
or two. It’s city with a strong cycling culture
evidenced by its many top end cycling shops and
lots of bike parking areas. Bolzano was also the
first Italian city to install a bicycle barometer
which appears on one of the main bike lanes in
the city and counts 8000 cyclists a day passing
through.
If you have time I would recommend taking the
Funivia Renon cable car for some spectacular
views over the Renon plateau before catching
the small train to the “Earth Pyramids”.
