Chances are that almost all of you have heard of that organisation, even though you are not in the medical profession. you have probably read about AMA activities in newspapers and magazines and heard reference to it on radio and television. If you were to ask a group of doctors, or for that matter any other societal group exclusive of engineers, if they have ever heard of ASCE, what response do you think you would get? I doubt that any more than 5% of those polled, if that many, would be able to identify ASCE. Why is that? It is probably because, we as civil engineers, have never made a concerted effort to identify ourselves as the true professionals we are. Recently a client of mine told me she was not active in ASCE because the society has never done very much to promote the plight of civil engineers. She went on to note that fifty years ago, engineers were cc3n.sidered prestigious members of our society and were looked up to by most other sectors of the population. She also noted that many engineers of that era earned more money than doctors, What has happened over the years? Obviously the AMA has been a yt.rong dnd respected voice in its field while ASCE has t-aken a back seat in portraying- our profession to those around us.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Have you ever heard of the AMA (American Medical Association)?Chances are that almost all of you have heard of thatorganisation, even though you are not in the medical profession.you have probably read about AMA activities in newspapers andmagazines and heard reference to it on radio and television. Ifyou were to ask a group of doctors, or for that matter any othersocietal group exclusive of engineers, if they have ever heard ofASCE, what response do you think you would get? I doubt that anymore than 5% of those polled, if that many, would be able toidentify ASCE. Why is that? It is probably because, we as civilengineers, have never made a concerted effort to identify

ourselves as the true professionals we are.

Recently a client of mine told me she was not active in ASCEbecause the society has never done very much to promote the plight

of civil engineers. She went on to note that fifty years ago, engineers were cc3n.sidered prestigious members of our society andwere looked up to by most other sectors of the population. Shealso noted that many engineers of that era earned more money than

doctors, What has happened over the years? Obviously the AMA hasbeen a yt.rong dnd respected voice in its field while ASCE hast-aken a back seat in portraying- our profession to those around us.

How can we imp. re our image, both -bo c peers and to thost/

surrounding us in society? We have to work dL it. We have -tobecome"involved. If we 'just sit back, our professional image willdecline-"while the images of those around us ascends. The poet

VLEL" Auden once said "It is a sad fact about our culture that apoet can earn much more money writing or talking about his artthan he can by practicing it." Maybe the AMA has done a good jobpublicizing themselves while engineers have done^ a^ good jobpracticing engineering and a bad job publicizing it. Let's all tryand improve our public image through participation in ASCEactivities and through day-to-day contacts with people both in theprofession and out of it.
