This past May marked the send off of another exceptional class of 279

McAuley graduates. The right of passage was heralded by smiles, laughs and

many tears, but headlined by a college acceptance rate of 100% and more

than $29 million in merit-based scholarships. Certainly, the stage is set for these amazing

women to write the next chapter of their lives. Stay tuned!

For so many alums, thoughts of McAuley bring to mind a special time in their lives. They

know that many of their special gifts and talents were first realized and cultivated through

their McAuley education. Whether it was a dedicated teacher who encouraged and pushed

beyond what was expected, or a coach who believed in a student more than the student

herself, or just simply the everyday moments that grew into a mountain of memories,

McAuley provided the foundation for so many young girls to be challenged and to grow into

the extraordinary women of Mercy that they are today.

This October, we will honor seven women who have channeled their gifts, knowledge,

experience and compassion into leadership and service roles that have bettered their

workplace, community, or the world. You may read about the accomplishments of these

2014 Hall of Honor inductees on page 4. I hope that many of you will be able to come back

to McAuley and celebrate these women at our second annual All-Class Reunion & McAuley

Hall Induction on October 25.

As we continue our mission to enrich the lives of the next generation of McAuley women, we

look to the support of our alumnae; women who awe and inspire us with their work, prayers,

volunteer and financial contributions. The ripple effect of the McAuley experience is never

more apparent than in the enthusiasm, mercy, love and joy and sisterhood of our 25,000

alumnae.

In Mercy,

Mary Acker Klingenberger ‘75 President

Katie Schumacher Cawley ‘97

Since 2008, former NCAA All-American and national champion at Penn State, Katie Schumacher-Cawley has served as head coach of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) women’s volleyball program, where she has led the team to 71 victories.

During her McAuley career, Katie excelled at volleyball and basketball, earning All-Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) honors in both sports and leading the Mighty Macs to state and national titles in volleyball. She was named the 1996 Player of the Year by the Southtown Star newspaper and the 1997 Chicago Sun-Times Female Athlete of the Year, among many awards and highlights.

At Penn State, Katie helped lead the Nittany Lions to the 1999 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship and earn three Big Ten Conference titles. She has been inducted into the GCAC Hall of Fame and Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, and is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. In 2013 she was named a UIC “INSPIRE” Award winner. This award recognizes individuals who have based their work and daily attitudes on UIC’s core values of Integrity, Nurturance, Service, Pride, Intellect, Respect and Excellence.

Katie’s presence at McAuley continues today, where she can be seen cheering on the Mighty Macs in volleyball and basketball. She also is a constant fixture at alumnae events for programs, and assists with McAuley’s annual summer camps.

Anne Edwards Cotter ‘73

Anne is owner and president of Cotter Consulting, Inc., a Woman-Owned, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and expert Program Management and Construction Management Firm she founded in 1990.

Anne remains a strong supporter of the school and credits much of her success to her McAuley education and the lifetime advantage it has provided her. She recently served as the chair of the Mother McAuley Board of Trustees and previously was a member of the Finance Committee. In 2006 she was awarded the school’s Distinguished Alumna Award during its annual Celebration Fundraising Gala.

As a McAuley student, Anne had a passion and talent for the performing arts. Her senior year, she stepped into the lead role of Dolly, in “Hello Dolly!” just weeks before the performance. Her musical inclination led her to Bradley University on a music scholarship, where she became the first woman president of the Student Council, and was the second woman to sit on the Board of Governance, preceded only by the University foundress, Lydia Moss Bradley.

Anne’s work and volunteer efforts have garnered her much recognition and many awards. In 2013, she was honored with the Women of Achievement Award by the Federation of Women Contractors and the Ethel S. Birchland Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. She also is the recipient of the 2006 March of Dimes Professional Award, the 2001 Bradley University Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Outstanding Alumnae Award, and in 2004 was inducted into the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.

Additionally, Anne has been a tireless supporter of her parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in Darien, serving as president of the Parish Council and overseeing several construction projects.

Sister Nancy Houlihan, RSM

For more than 30 years Sister Nancy Houlihan has served McAuley as an English teacher, beloved by the thousands of young women who have come to know her as teacher, mentor and friend.

During her time at McAuley Sister Nancy has served as moderator of Student Council, co-moderator of the Inscape student newspaper, moderator of the yearbook and moderator of Senior Dance. In 2013, Sister Nancy was named one of seven teachers chosen to participate in McAuley’s iPad® initiative; a program focused on the integration of the iPad into the classroom curriculum.

Sister Nancy continues to inspire her co-workers, students and family members to be better stewards of Catherine McAuley’s vision. For her deep faith and commitment to the school and the students, Sister Nancy was honored in 2002 with the Catherine McAuley Leadership Award during the school’s annual Mercy Day celebration.

Sister Nancy is a member of the Saint Xavier University Board of Trustees, serves as the area convener of the Sisters of Mercy of the West/Midwest Consultation Network and is in her second five-year term as the co-chair of the West Midwest Assembly Planning Committee. She previously sat on the Advisory Council of the Mercy Hospital Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center and the Sister of Mercy Region of Chicago Assembly Steering Committee, respectively, for which she was chair for many years.

Margaret Dee Merrion ‘67

Known as “Peggy Dee” to her classmates, Margaret exhibited leadership skills throughout her four years at McAuley. She served as chair of her homeroom for two years and was a member of student council. As a senior, Margaret was in Sister Simeon’s first advanced music appreciation class. This set the stage for Margaret to pursue music education at Chicago State University and then the University of Missouri, where she earned a Ph.D.

Margaret served as the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Western Michigan University (WMU) from 2000 to 2013. She previously served as the Dean and Professor in the College of Fine Arts at Ball State University. Throughout her 24 years as a university dean, she raised more than $14 million for scholarships, professorships and the construction of the Richmond Center for Visual Arts at WMU.

Margaret’s achievements have been recognized by many groups and organizations, including Rotary International which honored her philanthropy as a Paul Harris Fellow, and the Kalamazoo YWCA which recognized her with its Woman of Achievement Award. She has authored or co-authored five books and more than two dozen articles, chapters and monographs.

Professionally Margaret served as president of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, as well as a board member for seven years. Margaret’s community involvement includes her role as a past member of the Patient Family Advisory Council and ethics committee for Bronson Methodist Hospital. Frequently, she is called upon by the Michigan Humanities Council, Arts Council of Great Kalamazoo, Fontana Chamber Arts and other non-profit organizations to advance organizational effectiveness.

Kerry Ryan Lynch ‘98

Kerry has made it her mission to encourage children and adults to “choose kind” and embrace the beauty in the differences in all children.

In December 2011, Kerry and husband Chris welcomed Mary Cate, their first child. At birth, Mary Cate was diagnosed with Apert syndrome, a very rare condition marked by craniofacial malformation and fused fingers and toes. Faced with many surgeries, and raising a child with special needs, Kerry embraced the opportunity to educate others about Apert syndrome and established the blog, “My Mary Cate.”

In 2012, the National Honor Society of Mother McAuley chose Mary Cate as the recipient of its fundraising efforts during its annual Spring Ice Cream Social. The students, faculty and staff raised more than $6,000 to assist with medical expenses related to Mary Cate’s surgeries.

Inspired by the book, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, in 2012 Kerry began visiting Chicago-area grade schools. With Mary Cate in tow, Kerry spoke to more than 30 school groups, imparting the book’s message of “choose kind” to educate and encourage children to see beyond physical differences and limitations of others and to accept and embrace the beauty in all people.

Since beginning her blog and outreach, Kerry’s efforts have garnered worldwide attention from families and media alike. Her work and the story of My Mary Cate has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Today’s Chicago Parent, the Southtown Star newspaper and most recently, “The Today Show” in Australia featured a live interview with Kerry and Mary Cate. Kerry is involved with several additional organizations which support and educate about differences, including Changing the Face of Beauty, Gigi’s Playhouse, I AM WHO I AM and the Mulliganeers.

Barbara Patrick O’Toole, SXA ‘55

A staunch supporter of women’s education, Barbara Patrick O’Toole was a specialist in freedom of speech issues as an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois for more than 40 years. Barbara passed away in September 2013.

Following her graduation from Saint Xavier Academy (SXA), the precursor to Mother McAuley, Barbara attended Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. She then earned her law degree from Loyola University Chicago.

Barbara joined the ACLU of Illinois in 1970 as part-time counsel, where she worked with its Roger Baldwin Foundation until her death. Barbara took part in several significant cases for the ACLU, including one in the late 1970s when the organization defended the rights of a neo-Nazi group to demonstrate in Skokie — a community where at the time many residents were Holocaust survivors. Barbara also was the Illinois ACLU’s unofficial archivist and historian.

In recent years, Barbara worked nearly full time as a volunteer lawyer with the Illinois ACLU, specializing in First Amendment matters and supervising the agency’s intake department, which gets hundreds of requests for legal assistance each year.

The ACLU recognized Barbara with its Harry Kalven Freedom of Expression Award for her work ensuring the right of free speech in public forums to all persons. She also received the Earl Warren Award, for her exceptional volunteer service to the ACLU. In 1999, Saint Mary’s College honored Barbara with the Distinguished Alumna Award.

Recognizing the impact of her SXA education, in 1989 Barbara established the Katherine Patrick O’Toole Scholarship at McAuley in honor of her parents. This fully-endowed scholarship assists with tuition for a minority student through all four years of that student’s enrollment at Mother McAuley.

Trish Biondo Soltys ‘85

For the past 28 years, Trish Biondo’s voice has streamed across the Chicago airwaves for US99 FM Radio, where she’s been well-known as an on-air personality for the morning and mid-day programs.

Her formative years at McAuley were the perfect introduction to radio for Trish, who as a student, was best known for her work as the sports editor for Inscape, the school newspaper. She also served as president of the Orchestra and was a member of the National Honors Society, Student Council, Pep Band and served as a liturgical minister.

Her work in broadcasting has given Trish a springboard to raise awareness and donations for countless service organizations. Most notably, Trish helped create the framework for the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital annual radio-thon, for which her collaborations have helped raise nearly $20 million. Trish also is involved with Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, March of Dimes, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Toys for Tots, and the Chicago Police and Fire Departments, to name just a few.

While Trish believes in paying it forward, she also pays it back, lending her vocal talent to Mother McAuley to emcee several fashion shows and other fundraising events. Last year she narrated the McAuley Hall Honoree video.

Trish is a member of the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. In 1998, she was honored as the Billboard Music Director of the Year. She was a four-time Academy of Country Music nominee for Major Market Broadcaster of the Year, a rare honor. Additionally, she has been honored by the American Legion with its Veterans’ Appreciation Award.

Coming full circle: Eileen Boyce ’03 named first alumna principal

July 1, 2014 marked the beginning of a new era for Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, as Eileen Boyce ‘03 was named as the school’s first alumna principal. Eileen was the unanimous choice of the selection committee, following an extensive nationwide search and interview process.

Eileen joined Mother McAuley in 2012 as assistant principal. Her achievements during her tenure include directing the AdvancED accreditation process, co-chairing the Academic Council, directing the implementation of the Strategic Academic Plan and creating and implementing a 1:1 iPad® program.

“I’m thrilled that one of our own, raised and educated in the Mercy tradition, will assist in fulfilling the mission and vision for McAuley,” said Mary Acker Klingenberger ‘75, president. “I’ve witnessed firsthand Eileen’s leadership style and initiative; she truly exemplifies how a McAuley education challenges and empowers young women to not only rise to the occasion, but to the top of their profession.”

The principal serves as the chief operations officer of the school, focusing on faculty/staff and curriculum development, student life, technology and guidance and counseling. The principal reports to and is accountable to the president.

Eileen attended Saint Catherine’s grade school in Oak Lawn. She has one brother and is one of five sisters who attended Mother McAuley. Following her high school graduation she attended Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary educa-tion. She then earned a master of arts degree in educational administration from Saint Xavier University. She began her career as a junior high teacher at Saint John Fisher grade school, located in the Beverly community.

Eileen currently serves on the Saint Xavier University Educa-tion Department Advisory Council. She is a past committee member on the Saint Xavier University Consortium, and has been a guest speaker to graduate classes in the Educational Administration program at the University. Eileen was the 2012 recipient of the Nicholas Iosue Outstanding Teaching Award and a nominee and attendee for the highly-coveted Archdiocesan Leadership Academy for 2011 and 2012.

School News

At the end of May, our hallways cleared from the hustle and bustle of busy students, our cafeteria tables folded up from lively lunch table conversations, and our classrooms emptied from the sounds of thoughtful class discussions; however, that quiet didn’t last long. Within days, the halls filled with sounds of power tools, smells of new paint, and scenes of colored wiring hanging from the ceilings. Beyond the freshly painted walls and beautifully waxed floors, we also committed to support our growing advances in 1:1 educational technology by upgrading our technological resources and infrastructure, reflective of the progressive world in which we prepare our young women to live, learn, and thrive.

As an alumna, I value the tradition of Mercy education set forth nearly 170 years ago that actively fills our classrooms and community; yet, I am also proud that McAuley continually advances to provide our best for the next generation of students who enter our Circle Drive doors. We enroll bright, confident, talented, and high-achieving young women who continue utilizing all that McAuley offers to become their best selves during their high school years. Our young women dedicate time at the Learning Resource Center, Math Center, and Science Center to better prepare for class. They commit time and energy to serve our community through the many service projects our clubs and activities offer, and they spend countless hours on the court, on the stage, and in the classroom to sharpen their skills and develop their talents. They arrive to school early on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and the first Fridays of each month to grow in their faith at our morning Communion Services. Through these countless opportunities, our young women strive to become their best selves and to gain that lifetime advantage we promise them at Mother McAuley.

My hope is that all of our alumnae celebrate their McAuley education by continually seeking new ways to put that lifetime advantage to good use – the opportunities are endless!

In Mercy,

Eileen Boyce ‘03 Principal

This year, Mother McAuley established a new tradition with the introduction of an alumnae speaker during commencement. Bridget Gainer ‘86, Cook County Board Commissioner for the 10th District, shared her experience and advice with the Class of 2014.

Because of her service, her work in the community and her commitment to the school, Commissioner Gainer sets a wonderful example for the young ladies of McAuley as they embark on their college careers. She is a true testament to what a woman with the Lifetime Advantage of a Mother McAuley education can achieve. During her speech, she challenged the graduates to draw upon their leadership skills as they forge new paths at college and in the workforce.

“There will be moments when you aren’t so sure, those moments when college gets hard or when your job after

college gets harder. Never forget that you are wearing that strong McAuley armor – made from women who have come before you, the Sisters of Mercy who forged a path for women when none existed, the teachers who challenged and inspired you and the friends who were right there with you the whole time,” commissioner Gainer told graduates.

Commissioner Gainer grew up in Beverly and attended Saint Barnabas grade school. Following her graduation from McAuley, she attended the University of Illinois, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and English and later earned an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. She began her career in Brooklyn, New York, as a community organizer, and later continued that work in Chicago. She then went to work for the City of Chicago in a variety of roles, focused on public and private partnerships. In 2001, she began working at Aon, a global risk management firm, and was elected to the Cook County Board in 2010. She has been the recipient of awards from Action Now, the Woodstock Institute, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, the Urban Land Institute and Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Commissioner Gainer sits on the boards of the Big Shoulders Fund and the 100 Club of Chicago.

Proving that McAuley women can go anywhere and do anything, Alaina Rea ’14, is the

first graduate of Mother McAuley to attend the prestigious Julliard School, at which she

will enroll this fall. Alaina played in the McAuley orchestra for four years and has been

training with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra since the third grade. At Julliard,

she will continue to study the viola – an instrument she picked up just three years ago

after a lifetime of playing the violin. It is Alaina’s dream to return to Chicago and play

with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

McAuley Celebrates the Class of 2014

Families and friends of the 279 graduates of the Class of 2014 gathered on Sunday, May 18 at the Shannon Center on the campus of Saint Xavier University to celebrate the school’s 54th commencement ceremony. Keeping with a tradition that dates back to 1846, the graduates wore floor-length white gowns.

The Mother McAuley Class of 2014 boasted a National Merit Commended Scholar, a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship program, a Golden Apple Scholar, four members on the only all-girls team to compete in the National Science Bowl, 14 athletic signings in seven different sports and 40 Illinois State Scholars. Complementing the achievements is the fact that the class received $29 million in merit-based scholarships from the colleges and universities for which they applied. A complete list of these schools can be found on page 11.

McGinnis Pub GatheringTerri Duggan McGinnis ’68 welcomed our Mother McAuley alumnae once again this year at McGinnis Pub in Michigan City, Indiana on July 26. Alumnae came from near and as far away as Colorado and North Carolina for this fun and casual summertime gathering.

a l u m n a e n e w s

Annual Putt & Party Raises $15,000 for scholarshipsThe Alumnae Association welcomed 92 golfers and 30 additional dinner guests for cocktails, dinner and music. This year we were able to accommodate both competitive golfers and those who chose to play for fun, by splitting the groups up on different sides of the golf course. Everyone golfed at their own pace and had a great time. The Mother McAuley Scholarship “Putt & Party” Golf Outing raised close to $15,000 for the legacy “Tradition of Excellence” Scholarship fund. Please mark July 17, 2015 for next year’s outing and thank you to all our sponsors – it would not have been such a huge success without them!

Carey’s CornerThis issue of Inscape is a wonderful celebration of two different segments of the McAuley family. We highlight our recent graduates and newest alumnae, the Class of 2014. We celebrate their many successes here at McAuley but also celebrate their preparedness to continue to respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. All who encounter them will know by their actions…they are McAuley.

We also highlight our newest members to be inducted into McAuley Hall. These seven accomplished and inspiring representatives are impacting others with their intelligence, leadership, kindness and compassion. Please come and join McAuley in heralding these inspirational women…women who are at the top of their game…in their work place, in their homes and in their communities.

These are two amazing groups. Most of us are likely somewhere in between starting out and at the top of our game. However, we all share one experience….McAuley. And I ask you ….aren’t you better off because of it? Since I have been back home at McAuley, memories come flooding back of Benny hall, Berkley uniforms and dances, but most of all I am filled with an enormous amount of gratitude. Gratitude to my parents for the sacrifices they made to give me the gift of a McAuley education, gratitude to my teachers for their guidance and influence and to my classmates for their gifts of friendship and fun.

If you, like me, are grateful for McAuley and all that it provided for your life, I ask you to support us and help us continue providing a McAuley education to the next set of inspirational women now walking these halls. No gift is too small and together we can make a great impact….keeping McAuley strong and poised for continued success. I welcome a call and conversation with you. You may contact me at 773-881-6557.
