  • PREFACE

Under the scheme of epigraphical survey in Andhra Pradesh, the Epigraphy Assistants, in the

Department of Archaeology and Museums have conducted village wise survey in the Cuddapah Districtfrom 1965 to 1968 and copied more than eight hundred lithic records lying in old temples, tankbunds and

fields. It is unfortunate that our Assistants could not trace some inscriptionai stones which have been

noticed in the Annual Reports of South Indian Epigraphy, as many such stones are continuously subjectedto vandalism in one way or other. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. N. Ramesan,I.A.S.,the scheme ofEpigraphicalsurvey was introduced to copy and publish at least the available inscriptions in the State. Accordinglysix districts viz., Warangal, Karimnagar, Cuddapah, Kurnool, Nalgonda and Mahboobnagar have been

thoroughly searched for the epigraphs and copied about 3000 inscriptions. Publication of the Warangaland Karimnagar district inscriptions in two separate volumes was accomplished few years back. Owing tothe large number, the inscriptions ofthe Cuddapah district are being published in four parts.

Part I All the inscriptions upto the end of the^Kakatiya period.

Part II Vijayanagara inscriptions upto the end of Sadasivaraya's reign.

Part III The remaining Telugu inscriptions.

Part IV All the Tamil inscriptions.

The first two parts have been published two years back and the present volume forms the third

part of the series. The manuscript of the Tamil part is ready for printing.

The following]Assistant s ofthe epigraphy branch in the Department of Archaeology and Museumshave conducted the epigraphical survey in the taluks of theTQiddapah district as mentioned against their

names, under the supervision of the present editor, while the late Dr.N. Venkataramanayya was guidingas the Deputy Director for Epigraphy.

Sri S. Dasarathi, M.A. . . Cataloguer in the State Museum has conducted

epigraphical survey in Mopur, Pushpagiri and

some other places in the district.

I take this opportunity to put on record my gratefulness to Md. Abdul Waheed Khan,Dr. N. Ramesan, M.A.,Ph.D., I.A.S., and Sri P. Sitapati, M.A.J.A.S., the three successive heads of the

Department of Archaeology and Museums for their kind encouragement by giving me this opportunityof editing the Telugu and Sanskrit inscriptions of the district in parts I, II and III. I am also thankful to

my colleagues who have conducted the epigraphical survey in the district as shown above, along withthe Estampage Takers, who have copied the inscriptions. I acknowledge with much indebtedness the

immense help rendered by Sri V.V. Seshacharyulu, retired Telugu Pandit Z.P. High School, Rayachoti

who furnished us the information regarding the provenance of a number of inscriptions in the district and

often used to accompany us to several places at his own cost.

My thanks are also due to Sri V. V. Naidu, Director, A.P. Govt. Text Book Press,Sri V. Gangadharam, Foreman and their Assistants who have taken special care in printing the book

    in record time.

  • HISTORICAL NOTE

The present third part of the inscriptions of the Cuddapah District, contains the Teluguinscriptions of the miscellaneous nature most of them being posterior to the fall of Vijayanagara in A.D.1565. The political importance of these records is very little, though they throw some light on theMuslimrule in the region,in addition to the minor subordinate rulers like the Matli chiefsand the latter Nandyfilachiefs. Few records refer to the Kutub Shahis of Golconda and the Moghul Emperor Alanghir Padshah.

Srlranga I is represented by about half a dozen epigraphs in this book, the earliest being from

Gurrampadu (No. 62) dated Saka, 1500, and the latest from Kottapalli (No. 157) dated . 1507

Venkatapati Raya II, is represented by nine epigraphs in this collection, which range from

    Saka, 1511 (A.D. 1589) (No. 128) to Saka, 1533, A.D. 1611-12 (No.73). Of these records, the epigraphfrom Varikunta (No.15) dated A.D.1602 and another from Nemalladinne(No. 73)dated A.D. 1611-12 refer

to Chandragiri as capital, whereas all othei records refer to Penugonda.

It is interesting to note that the record from ChinaVejmturla refers itselfto Sri Ramaraju RSma-

ppayya, ruling seated on the diamond throne from Vijayanagara in the year Saka, 1612, PramodEta,

Magha $u,15, Monday which regularly tallies with 6th February, 1691.

    The Matli Chiefs:

The Gurrampadu epigraph of Srlrangaraya's reign dated SakalSOO, A.D. 1578, records the gift(ofsome land) in that village to certain brahmapa by the Matli chief Tirumalaraja son of EllamarSja and

    grandson of Konamaraju.

No. 244, incised on the east wall near the entrance of the old fort at Siddhavatam is historically

important. Dated in Saka 1527, ViSvavasu, corresponding to A.D. 1605-6, the inscription enumerates the

military achievements of the Matli chiefEllamarSja and his son Anantaraja. The latter is said to have built

the extensive stone wall of the fort at Siddhavatam which his father haxfacquired inthe battle of Utukflru.

The Telugu portion ofthe recoid which is a Slsamah'ka, states that while the Hindu-rSya VlraVenkatarayawas ruling the kingdom from Chandragiri sima, Anantaraja constructed in his own name a tank called

Anantaraju-cheruvu at Siddhavatam which his father Ellamaraju acquired at the point of his sword after

defeating Kondamaraju Tirupatiraju in battle and built the wall of the fort around the town. AnantarBjuis also said to have been the scion of the Devachotfa family ; to have killed Revala Velikonfla Venkatadr

to have gained victory in the battle field of Jambulama
