Internship InformationCourse Title: Internship in Higher Education Instructional Design

Prerequisites: INSDSG 601 [Introduction to Instructional Design] and INSDSG 602 [The adult as learner] and INSDSG Technology Course (examples 640, 616, 605) - or - permission of the instructor(s). Prerequisite Skills:

Good oral and written communication skills, an understanding of the instructional design process, a curiosity and ability to learn new tools, often without official training, to support learning goals.

Internship Description:

This Internship in Higher Education Instructional Design is meant to be a hands-on experience working in a Higher Education environment working as an instructional designer. The hands-on projects will vary from semester to semester; however students taking part in the internship should expect, among other things, to conduct consultation sessions with faculty; participate in campus conferences, including logistical support for the conferences; and assist faculty with getting their courses online, or helping them with creating web-enabled and online courses. Technical Requirements: Equipment to do the work is available at the UMass Boston campus. Students dont need to bring their own devices. Required Text(s):

None. Any required readings will be provided as part of the Internship.

Course Objectives:

By fully participating in this internship, you should be able to: Effectively utilize the learning technologies available to the UMass Boston community and apply it appropriately to enhance and support learning outcomes Conduct instructional design consultations with clients (faculty), gaging their needs for their courses and providing sound instructional design recommendations. Work effectively as part of a diverse team of instructional designers, educational technologists and media specialists to achieve common goals. Help clients create courses, using educational technologies, from scratch; or modify existing courses to adhere to new learning objectives and expected outcomes.

Core Competencies: The following IBSTPI competencies are competencies that you will be working on throughout this internship: 1. Professional Foundations a. Communicate Effectively in Visual, Oral and Written Form. b. Apply current research and theory to the practice of Instructional Design. c. Update and Improve Ones Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes Pertaining to Instructional Design and Related Fields. d. Apply fundamental research skills to instructional design projects. e. 3. Design & Development a. Select Modify or Create a Design and Development Model Appropriate for a Given Project. b. Select and Use a Variety of Techniques to Define and Sequence the Instructional Content and Strategies. c. Select or Modify Existing Instructional Material. d. Develop Instructional Materials. e. Design Instruction that Reflects an Understanding of the Diversity of Learners and Groups of Learners. f. Evaluate and Assess Instruction and its Impact. 4. Implementation & Management a. Promote Collaboration, Partnerships and Relationships among the Participant in a Design Project. b. Apply Business Skills to Managing Instructional Design.

Required Assignments: 1. Weekly Technology Tools Professional Development: Each week you will be introduced to a new educational tool available at UMass Boston. You will have access to a Subject Expert regarding the use of the tool, but you will also be required to work independently in learning about the tool. By the end of the week you are expected to have gain some rudimentary understanding of how the tool works, and how the tool can be applied in a teaching and learning scenario. By the end of the semester you will be required to demonstrate that you have mastered the use of the tool. 2. Weekly work assignments In addition to the professional development opportunities, each week you will be working with an instructional designer, from the Instructional Support Team, on a specific instructional design project. Sometimes the design project will be a week, or two in length; other times it will be longer. You may be asked to work on something on your own, or as part of a team. The grading of these assignments will be based on work completion, on collegiality, on communication, and timeliness. 3. Group Work As part of an integrated department, you will routinely work with others. Your performance as part of a group will be part of your grade. Interpersonal relations, group conflict and group communications will be counted toward your grade. At the end of the semester each group member will fill out an anonymous survey, which will be factored into grading. This presentation will be a post-mortem presentation on the internship experience. Course Policies: Participation & Attendance - Just like any work environment you are expected to attend work in order to receive a grade. Your internship schedule will be determined at the beginning of the semester. If you are sick, please let us know in advance so that we can make alternate plans. Any missed on-site time will have to be made up. Group Work Part of the grade for this internship is how well you work with others. Your collegiality, communication skills, and professional demeanor will be part of the consideration for your grade. Late Work This internship is scheduled for 14 weeks. All work for the course will need to be completed by then. While there is no late work policy per se, you are expected to work professionally and respect accepted timetables set forth by the Instructional Support Team and the Instructional Support Management. Any work you produce in a late fashion has an adverse effect on your coworkers and your reputation as a competent instructional designer.

Other Pertinent and Important Information This internship is rated for 16-20 hours per week. This means that you are expected to be on-site (UMass Boston Digital Learning Studio) for a minimum of 16 hours per week. You internship schedule will be determined collaboratively the just before the semester starts. Since this isnt a course, but rather an internship, we will be working under the same assumptions as a regular work environment: If the office is open, and youre on the duty roster you are supposed to be there. If there is a holiday when youre scheduled to be at work, you dont have to come in, but any projects that youre assigned to, need to be done by the date that has been agreed upon.

Please note that this schedule is only a rough estimation of each week. Projects will be available throughout the semester to work on and you will be given additional deadlines for completing work that isnt on this syllabus. In other words, this syllabus is subject to change.
