This winter, the following energy saving
tips can help you save money on your
monthly energy bill while staying
comfortable in your home.
• Set your thermostat no higher than
68 degrees when you are home and
lower the temperature when you go
to bed or when you are not at home.
For every additional degree you lower
your thermostat you save about 2
percent off your heating bill.
• Cut annual heating bills by as much as 10 percent a year by turning
your thermostat back 10 to 15 percent for eight hours a day.
• Reducing air leaks could cut 10 percent from your household’s
monthly energy bill. The most common places where air escapes
a home are floors, walls, ceilings, ducts, fireplaces, plumbing
penetrations, doors, windows, fans, vents and electrical outlets.
• Keep shades and curtains open during the day on the south side of
your home to allow solar heating. Close them at night to retain heat.
• Don’t block your radiators or heating vents with furniture or draperies.
Close vents and doors in unused rooms.
• Place a sheet of aluminum foil between the radiator and the wall to
reflect heat back into the room.

information about our great energy efficiency programs and other energy
saving tips.
Save Energy & Stay Comfortable With These Energy Saving Tips
Eversource wants you and your family to
stay safe this winter season.
Whether you heat your home with oil,
natural gas, coal or wood, please keep the
following important safety tips in mind:
• Reduce the risk of carbon monoxide
poisoning by having your heating
equipment “tuned up” each year.
• Make sure any vents on the outside
of your home are completely
unobstructed and able to properly
ventilate - especially after a snow
storm.
• Turn off space heaters when you
leave a room or plan to sleep. Also,
keep them at least three feet from
flammable objects.
• Never plug a space heater into an
extension cord, and make sure the
power cord on your space heater isn’t
damaged or frayed.
