While Virgin's managing director Simon Draper has yet to announce wilson's successor, a new label boss is expected shortly. Said Draper: "Carol has worked for us for many years now and naturally we wish her every success for the future. Gloomy future instore for records, predicts GreenawayWHILE COMPOSERS should be"relatively happy" with the state ofbroadcasting in Britain, the future pos-sibilities offered by the recording indus-try were a matter of greater concern, claimed songwriter Roger Greenaway ata seminar on Music In Broadcasting, organised last week in london by theNational Music Council of Britain.

Greenaway, a panellist in a sessiondealing with the composer's approach, recalled how radio and TV had killed offsheet music as a major source of incomefor a writer. What was happening nowon the mechanical royalty side was adecline in the amount of income which acomposer could expect from recordroyalties.

His gloomy prediction was to antici-pate the "almost complete demise" ofthe record industry over a ten-yearperiod. It would, he felt, become "acottage industry" selling to a few peoplewho wanted their music on record. Hesuggested that in future the performingright would become the most importantsource of income and "possibly the onlyone eventually"

However, notwithstanding Green-away's favourable comments abouttreatment of pop by radio and television,Nicholas Maw felt that serious musiccomposers were less well treated. He feltthat although in many respects theBBC's record was an "admirable one", ithad failed to provide proper facilities toencourage the development of contem-porary music. He was particularly criticalthan the BBC had not placed a properelectronic studio at composers' disposal.Insufficient airtime was given to theworks of serious living composers, hecomplained.

In reply, Ernest Warburton, musiceditor of Radio -3, admitted that therewas a lack of contemporary music on thenetwork and steps were being taken toremedy the omission.

Speaking on the performer's attitude, musical director Harry Rabinowitz deli-vered some forthright remarks, in whichthe BBC once again came under fire."We do music better, faster, more

skilfully and with a finer sense of stylethan anywhere else in the world, apartfrom the US," he said. But whilerewards were good financially, theywere not matched by the artistic satisfac-tion gained by a musician. He urgedmanufacturers to speed up the introduc-tion of stereo TV sound and the BBC tobroadcast more "live" music, ratherthan employ musicians to perform "thesame tired old arrangements" which didnot do the players justice.

Capital compilesfor golden jubileeCAPITOL RECORDS celebrates itsgolden jubilee this year and one manwho intends that this year should notend without the label's contribution tomusic being marked is Alan Warner.

Warner is an English self-exile in LosAngeles and is best known in thiscountry for his discovery of long lostfilm musical gems such as 'The Trail OfThe Lonesome Pine'.

To him was given the momentoustask of sifting through the thousands ofhits, let alone the rest of the Capitol,Liberty, United Artists and associatedmaterial, to create a series of compila-tions which would do justice to themusic of five decades.

"It is the most extensive retrospectiveever commissioned and in total runs to42 albums. I wanted to include as manyhits as possible but I also includedcollectors items and interesting originalversions," said Warner.

So far on the market is the rock 'n' rollsection of the series, 12 albums tracingthe rise of the form from Fats Domino tothe Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was thiscollection that Warner featured on theOld Grey Whistle Test on Thursday whenhe showed film clips of Domino, GeneVincent and a previously unshown filmof Jan & Dean singing 'Surf City'.

To follow are a series of 12 easylistening albums, 10 country albumsand eight film music albums. The latteris naturally closest to Warner's heartwith a rock 'n' roll film album deservingspecial attention. It contains the best notonly from UA and Liberty but Towerand Sidewalk which means more Domi-no but acts like The Standells - theoriginal garage band - and for the firsttime 'The Weight' by The Band fromthe soundtrack of Easy Rider.

"These sets are not only highly

42 albums of Capitol goodiesfrom oldies expert Alan Warner.

entertaining they are also historical. Iwas trying to represent the best of therepertoire which EMI owns worldwide. If they go well there is room forcollections of the very earliest NewOrleans material and a 70s collection.Hopefully it will be the beginning of anongoing series," said Warner.

A way to combat someof those 'perfect faulties'IF RECORD dealers received £1 forevery time a customer returned a`faulty' record only for it to playperfectly on the shop equipment mostof them would now be sunning them-selves in well earned retirement in theBahamas.

Sadly. RB cannot envisage such ascheme but Mike Butler of theEvesham based Record Tape & VideoCentre has an idea which could gosome of the way to relieve the night-mare of 'perfect faulties'.

Like all good ideas it is deceptivelysimple. He simply wants record manu-facturers to advise the public thatmore often than not it is their equip-ment, and the way it is set up, that is atfault.

"Quite often you can see where thestylus on badly set up material hasploughed its way around the groove. Itis difficult for the retailer to get thecustomer to understand about equip-

ment. I am sure that a short note fromthe manufacturer could make a differ-ence," said Butler.

A statement along the lines of "Thisrecord should reach you in perfectcondition. If you have any problemscheck that your equipment is correctlyset-up and stylus in good condition. Ifnot satisfied please return to yourdealer for advice"; could be printed oninner or outer sleeves with littleproblem.

HMV has its ownaccessory rangeHMV RETAIL has launched its ownbrand of accessories for record andtapes. The range includes 27 items forcleaning, preventing static 'and storingrecords and for building up matchingsets of audio and video tape.

REGIOffillIreland

Industry putsthe squeeze Ulsteron piratesFOLLOWING THE Minister for Postsand Telegraphs' statement that legisla-tion regarding pirate radios in Ireland isto be drafted by the Irish Government, the Irish record industry has reaffirmedits stand on illegal broadcasting. Ameeting of the Irish Federation ofPhonographic Industries (Ireland) re-solved "That the member companies ofIFPI (Ireland) welcome the Minister forPosts and Telegraphs statement andclarify their position in relation to pirateradio and affirm that it is not the policyof the member companies in the groupto support pirate radio stations in anyway."

The decision means that the com-panies party to the motion will refuse tosupply promotional copies of records todisc -jockeys for use on pirate radios. This ban includes night club DJs whoalso work for the illegal radio stations.

At present there are a large number ofpirate radio stations operating in Ire-land. In the capital Dublin, there can beup to six on the air at any one time.Major population centres around thecountry also boast one or two pirates pertown.

The Government's legislation when itcomes in is expected to legalise localradio with the emphasis being on com-munity affairs. The state broadcasting

system RTE, which currently enjoys alegal monopoly of the airwaves, is one ofthe contenders for the licences for localbroadcasting.

BRENDAN MARTIN

SEVERAL MONTHS back, popularcountry vocalist and record dealer GeneStuart decided to venture further intothe recording field. He designed andopened his own 24 -track studio knownas Northsound Recording Studios, justoutside Dungannon in Co. Tyrone.

And with recordings from the newstudio he decided to launch his ownrecording label also - Rainbow Records. The first two albums on the label areThat's Country featuring DowntownRadio presenter John Greer, and asecond album The Married And The Freeby songstress Greta Elkin. On the singlesend American Express have 'Shame OnYou, Shame On Me', and pop bandPluto have a self -composed 'Get Out OfMy Life' awaiting release

Other artists who have new record-ings recorded in Northsound Studiosand awaiting release on Rainbow areLarry Cunningham, Brian Coll, Shan-non Brothers, and the boss himself GeneStuart, all have new albums in thepipeline for early release.

TOP SPIN Records has two new albumsissued featuring best-selling artists. From Philomena Begley comes My KindOf Country and from Susan McCannSincerely Yours. Both albums were re-corded in the Fireside Recording Stu-dios in Nashville.

LIVE MUSICELVIS COSTELLOLondon, Royal Albert Hall

AFTER SUCCEEDING with the chal-lenge of the Almost Blue album, ElvisCostello next set himself the task ofreproducing the experience for a one-off concert at the Royal Albert Hall inthe company of The Royal Philharmo-nic Orchestra.

The concert, which was filmed byRiviera Global, was split into two parts. The first set was straightforwardenough with Costello and The Attrac-tions running through both old and newmaterial in familiar style.

After the interval, however, it was adifferent story. The RPO took up theirpositions and the star walked on withSteve Nieve for a confident version of'Shot With His Own Gun'. They werethen joined by the rest of The Attrac-tions and Doobie Brother JohnMcPhee on pedal steel guitar.

While older numbers such as 'Ali-son' and 'Accidents Will Happen' suc-cessfully received the Hooked OnElvis treatment, the audience reservedmost applause for the Almost Bluematerial such as 'Brown To Blue' andthe two recent singles.

Having finished with a stirring ver-sion of '(What's So Funny 'Bout)Peace Love and Understanding', Elviseventually had to be called back to tell

tne crowd that they had run out ofmaterial to play. The concert was anundoubted feather in Costello's cap,and it will be interesting to see what hedoes next. ANTHONY RILEY

DAVE EDMUNDSLondon, Royal Albert HallFOLLOWING THE acrimony sur-rounding the break-up of Rockpile,Dave Edmunds has finally hit thecomeback trail. Swansong has justissued a Best Of compilation andEdmunds has signed to Arista and isworking on an album for Spring re-lease.

For his first British appearance post-Rockpile, Edmunds assembled a bandwhich included former Love Sculpturecolleague John David on bass, andGeraint Watkins on piano and accor-dian.

Playing before a capacity house, thechoice of 'Crawling From The Wreck-age' as an opener was both ironic anda pointer to the rest of the evening. Itwas followed by a mixture of newmaterial and old favourites such as 'IHear You Knocking' and 'Girls Talk'.

The band was in fine form and fortheir well-earned encore they werejoined by a three man brass section forrousing versions of 'The Wanderer'and 'Stagger Lee'.

Reggae 17 chart from Sunshine Records, NorthLondon

Disco DealerSTEVIE WONDER'S new album Ste-vie Wonder's Original Musiquarium, isnow due imminently, it seems, afterhaving been on the schedules sincebefore Christmas. Catalogue numberis TMSP 6012. Motown has prefacedit with a hastily -released single 'ThatGirl' (TMG 1254), a lengthy cut at5'13", but only available (initially, atleast) on 7". Nevertheless, it shouldassist a strong batch of new product tobreak up the stranglehold of the upperchart reaches by a series of re,:ordswhich seem to have been around for-ever, having in many cases had theirnatural sales life extended by theChristmas period.

RCA's other likely biggie is EvelynKing's 'Spirit Of The Dancer', astrong track from her 'I'm In Love'album, and welcome now in 12 -inchform on RCAT 179. Over at WEA,George Benson's 'Never Give Up OnA Good Thing' is already making ahealthy showing, and can expect to bejoined by Modern Romance's 'QueenOf The Rapping Scene' (also on12 -inch), Slave's 'Wait For Me', andparticularly Randy Crawford's versionof 'Imagine' - a live UK recordingwhich has not been previously heard.

Some action too amongst the smalllabels. Norma Lewis' reggae track`This Feeling's Killing Me', which hashad a month of reggae top 10 andminor disco chart action on the inde-pendent Challenge label, has now beenpicked up by Jive records (distributedby CBS), and will be reissued this weekas JIVE 11/T 11.

New imported product is virtuallynon-existent at the moment, due to amixture of the weather, the holiday, andfew new American releases. As pre-dicted, WEA has the Whispers albumavailable quickly enough to have nippedall but the very early import sales neatlyin the bud.

..1131111This week:CLANGERWINSTANLEY

Trying to createthe ultimate invivacious popCLANGER WINSTANLEY is alegend seldom missing from the charts, album or singles, yet this productionteam has been active for just two yearsand by its own admission is still learningthe game.

Clive Langer and Alan Winstanleymet, appropriately enough, in a studioand it seems as though they have beenthere ever since, creating a string of hitsfor the likes of Madness, The TeardropExplodes and Tenpole Tudor.

When asked to recall a time when theydid not have a chart single between themthe duo struggle to recall 'two or threeweeks sometime' but it is professionalpride rather than egotism which drawsthis response.

Langer and Winstanley are searchingfor the ultimate pop song. Individuallyand collectively they put the maximumamount of effort into every track andtreat each as a potential hit single, maintaining a vivacious quality whichseems irresistable.

Where the roles divide Langer is thevisionary with a musician's eye for thebest treatment of particular songs andWinstanley is the man who knows howto achieve the desired effects. An over-simplification, of course, since bothmen work apart but that is how anoutsider would see the team.

RB caught up with them at CapitalRadio where they had just undergonethe ordeal of live radio at the invitationof Charlie Gillett. The deejay playedexamples of their work and other pro-ducers they admired and talked aboutthe role of hit producers.

Relaxing afterwards they recalledmeeting at Fulham's TW Studios, where Winstanley was completing aneight -year apprenticeship as an en-gineer. He had worked with producerMartin Rushent on The Stranglers andmet Langer when his group Deaf Schoolhired the studio.

Langer had meanwhile come across asuperb new act which he was deter-mined to produce - the band wasMadness and his tribulations on theirbehalf are documented in the film TakeIt Or Leave It. After working on a fewdemos together it seemed natural thatLanger and Winstanley should team upfor the Madness album - a platinumseller in the UK and France. It was quitea start. Stiff used the credit 'ClangerWinstanley' and it has stuck since.

Deaf School being the first of theLiverpool new wave to come to publicattention it is natural that Langerparticularly has retained a strong

Merseyside interest in his work. Hecurrently produces former DS singersBette and Steve Allen (Original Mirrors)but it is with The Teardrop Explodesthat he and Winstanley have found mostsuccess.

They first worked on 'Treason (It'sJust A Story)' for the then Liverpool -based independent Zoo and went on toproduce the band's first big hit 'Re-ward'. 'Passionate Friend' maintainedthe run of success and Langer workedalone on the album Wilder.

TTE leader Julian Cope likes to keephis fans guessing and Langer hoped thatpeople would be pleasantly surprised byWilder. "We are now at the stage whenwe must better all the other recordswhich have gone before. People who sawthe material performed live should bevery surprised. The sound is certainlyunexpected," he commented.

SIMILARLY WINSTANLEY prom-ised unexpected results of TenpoleTudor's new album Let The Four WindsBlow. "We went for a pretty heavyguitar sound and the overall intentionwas to make it sound like The RollingStones," revealed Winstanley.

Ironically it was Langer who firstworked with Tenpole, producing somedemos years ago. It is Winstanley whoturned them from a bad joke into thehitmakers of 'Swords Of A ThousandMen' and Wunderbar'.

All this was a long way distant whenLanger persuaded The Yachts that hecould do a better job on their demo tapesthan their previous producer. He askedWinstanley to engineer and the part-nership was born.

"He was adding more and more as the

The ProducersIn the manner of many oftoday's producers, CliveLanger and Alan Winstanleywork hard at stamping theirown commercial sound onthe music of their acts, ascheme that has donewonders for Madness,Tenpole Tudor and TheTeardrop Explodes. Reportby PAUL CAMPBELL.session continued, doing far more thanengineering. It was then I realised thatwe realised that we worked well as ateam," remembers Langer. On theoccasions he works alone as a producerLanger uses Colin Fairley as engineer.

The Clanger/Winstanley method ofrecording is remarkable. First anarrangement is worked out and therhythm track organised - the naturalbeginning of any song - but then thetrack is recorded as though it were aseries of interlocking parts.

The body of the song is chopped andchanged in the mixing, with chorus, verse, instrumental break, and introtreated as interchangable parts. It is a`scissor and paste' method of produc-tion, but it works remarkably well.

Langer describes the method as"knocking the sound around until itsounds right. The song dictates thesound and therefore no two approachesare alike". The result is that the part-nership might spend days workingreworking the final mix.

Winstanley thinks that the beauty ofthe system is that it ensures that eachpart of the song must have merits of itsown in order for it to stand alone andcomplement the final mix.

"A great song is a great song no matterwhat the treatment but arranging andmixing can make all the difference to agood song. We think of every track as apotential single which deserves the bestpossible treatment," said Langer.

THE GROUPS which the pair workwith are generally escaping from thepunk legacy of poor musicians playingeverything straight. "Take Madness forinstance. They were not good musicianswhen we began working with them butthey have improved with every record,"noted Winstanley.

"We are both quite new to production

Woods of Madness -a band that has improved with every record, say theirproducers.

Clive Langer (top) and AlanWinstanley use the 'scissors and paste'production method.

and are still learning. What is true is thatbands must really trust you and feel atease before you can work properly," headded.

This is important to Clanger/Winstanley because it keeps their feet on theground. "In the long run it is the songswhich count. We try to make an endresult which the group will feel proudof but it is no good if they cannotperform the song," said Langer.

"I'm always striving for the perfectrecord but I suppose that if I ever foundit there would be nothing to carry on for. There could be great improvements inthe final product. I don't get theopportunity to listen to many recordsbecause I'm so busy but I'm usuallydisappointed in the sound," Winstanleyadmitted.

As a partner in Genetic, with MartinRushent, Winstanley is free to find anddevelop his own acts and will be on thelook out for talent just as soon as he canfind the time. In particular he would liketo break out of the rock field in which hehas developed his reputation to workwith a British funk band.

Pete Shertser: recording new stuff.

`SUPERBLUES FOR the masses' is theslogan of Red Lightnin' Records, one ofthe first British independent labels. Itaccurately describes the enthusiasticattitudes of founder/boss Peter Shertserwho, throughout his varied life, hasalways loved the music.

"I've been a blues freak since I was akid, he says. "I saw Muddy Waters onTV in '59 and thought he was a lot moreexciting than Lonnie Donegan. I'm nowthe sort of fanatic that can quote all thecatalogue numbers at you."

While at college studying pharmacol-ogy, Shertser became involved with theradical 60s magazine IT, and was askedby the staff to organise sales of an album,`Ptoof!' , during his Summer holidays."I didn't know anything about thebusiness, he admits. "But the money

No blues at thisblues fans' labelAn independent that has been marketing blues and R&B for12 years, Red Lightnin' Records is still going strong, relyingon expertise and personal contact with the trade to achievesuccess.was so good that there was no way I wasgoing -back to college."

Instead he left for New York where hemet Seymour Stein and subsequentlybecame a producer for Sire Records.Stein initially impressed Shertser - "Hehad worked with the R&B labels in the50s and knew all my heroes" - and alsoprovided an intense course on the musicbusiness. However, the associationdidn't prosper and disillusion soon setin.

Shertser went back to Britain to set upa really independent label with hispartner, Ian Simpin. "We did all ourown distribution at first, then workedup to wholesalers. Our first release onRed Lightnin' was a John Lee HookerLP - an early recording with justHooker, his guitar and foot -tapping.

In the past few years we've beenaiming at rock audiences - there's a newblues market that I want to capture.Recent response has been phenomenal,I think it's got a lot to do with therecession. We're also recording newstuff, not just re -issues like some otherblues labels."

One of Red Lightnin's most recentsuccesses has been the Jimi Hendrixalbum of previously unreleased mate-rial, Woke Up This Morning And FoundMyself Dead (RL 0015). How didShertser get hold of the tapes?.

"I'd had them for over 10 years, Ibought them from Mick White, whowas in a band that Jimi managed. Iwaited until last year to release becausethe time was right. Troubled andaggressive - that's the way the musicsounds, very frenetic. I've had fan mailevery day since it came out, mainly from17-18 year -olds.

Even so, we've no real designs to-wards commerciality, well, maybe alittle, but it doesn't have to be bigbudget. We'll sell enough on the net-work on our reputation even if the bandare unknown."

Red Lightnin' is based in Norfolkwith a permanent staff of three and thesort of expansive warehouse that theycouldn't afford in London. "We useschoolgirls in the holidays to help out.We phone around 200 to 300 shopsourselves, checking if they've got thestock. We're handled by 10 distributorsincluding Pinnacle. I find people listenif you do things for yourself. Forexample, BBC DJs can be very accessi-ble. I asked Dave Lee Travis if he couldplay just a snippet of a blues album onhis show, adding that I knew he couldn'tplay very much at that time of day, buthe said if he wants to play something, heplays it, and then featured six longtracks of slow blues."

The label is currently in the process ofnegotiating a dual deal with Americanindie Flying Fish Records. Betweenthem, the labels will produce, releaseand promote an album by Matt 'Guitar'Murphy. "Neither of us could haveafforded to do it alone. Bruce Kaplan, head of Flying Fish has the licence forthe USA and Canada, I have Europe, and we're going six rounds for Japan!Seriously, there's a bit of a dispute overthis, but it'll work out."

Armageddonto switch itsdistributionARMAGEDDON RECORDS is tochange its distributor. The labei hasbeen handled by Stage One almost sinceits inception, however this arrangementhas now been ended and negotiations arenow in progress with other distributors, including Pinnacle. An announcementwill be made soon.

The next two major releases,Little Figures by the Method Actors andthe Moonlight Club compilation (parttwo) will be available through the newdistributor in late January.

Al13UM REVIEWS

Top 40BARBRA STREISAND: Love Songs(CBS 10031) Prod: VariousThe inclusion of three 1981 -recordedtracks hardly qualifies this as her"new" album. However, romantic bal-lads like 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers',`Evergreen' and 'The Way We Were'are worth the re -run along with someless familiar, but equally beguilingperformances. Among the new songsis her majestic version of 'Memory',comparable to but not better than theElaine Paige version, which will helpfocus consumer attention on the col-lection generally.

Top 60PETE SHELLEY: Homosapien(Genetic ILPS 9676) Prod: MartinRushent./Pete ShelleyThe former Buzzcock makes a credit-able solo LP debut on Martin Rus-hent's new Genetic trademark throughIsland. His voice remains attractivelyfragile and his songs, like the betterBuzzcocks material, string togetherunusual structures and phrasing tech-niques. The change is in the in-strumental arrangements which arefashionably electronic, overlaid withcrisp guitar chords and exhibit plenty ofbeef in the production department.'Homosapien' made a good single, and could perhaps be repromoted, butthe album should chart when fans get achance to hear Shelley's new sound.

SAMMY HAGAR: Standing Hamp-ton (Geffen GEF85456) Prod: KeithOlsenWill his new label give Hagar thebreakthrough here that Capitol neverquite succeeded in achieving? Cer-tainly Hagar has delivered the goodswith his debut for Geffen - a hard-hitting package of heavy metal, wherethe decibels and drive are com-plimented by a discernible degree ofmelody. His following in the UK isgrowing, and his uninhibited vocalsand fine guitar playing, excellentlycaptured on this tightly -produced effortby the celebrated Keith Olsen, shouldgain more adherents. A marvelloustreatment of the classic 'Piece Of MyHeart' is already attracting airplayinterest as a single.

Best of the restA CERTAIN RATIO: Sextet (FactoryFACT 55) Prod: ACRFirst album from Manchester's ACRwith new vocalist Martha Tilson but themusic is the same funky blend ofrhythms which opened the way forbands such as Haircut 100 and Pig -bag. While the album does not containthe new single 'Waterline' it does havenine excellent tracks which shouldensure indie success for an act whichhas been threatening to break into themajor market for some time.

GIRL: Wasted Youth (Jet LP 238)Prod: Nigel Thomas/Girl

Top 10VARIOUS ARTISTS: ModernDance (K-tel. NE 1156) Prod: Va-riousGood-looking sampler of currentlyfashionable bands under the 'futur-ist' (for want of a better word) tag.Tracks like /Quiet Life' and 'Visions

Of China' by Japan, 'Joan Of Arc'by OMD, 'Penthouse Pavement' byHeaven 17, 'Love Action' and`Open Your Heart by HumanLeague and 'New Life' by DepecheMode indicate the strength of thisTV -advertised 18 -track compila-tion. As several of these tracks arecurrent product the performance ofthis LP will be much better thanusual for such a compilation.

John Foxx and Heaven 17: on K-tel's compilation of hot bands.

Second album from the band whichwas previously trying to combineheavy metal with glam rock. By thecover pics, the lads have now opted fora more butch image - as indeed befitstheir music because on stage theywere always out-and-out heavy. PhilLewis's vocals continue to be impress-ive and Girl is certainly a more thought-ful and varied group of musicians thanare many of the British heavy ilk, butthe feeling persists that the raw songmaterial and an overall ponderouspresentation inhibit the band at pre-sent. The band goes out on tourshortly.

RICK WAKEMAN: The Burning(Charisma CLASS 12) Prod: RickWakeman/Alan BrawerWakeman's second release on Char-isma is the soundtrack from the horrorfilm The Burning. Availble at mid -pricethe album contains one side of musicfrom the film and another of Wake -man's variations on the themes used. The soundtrack itself is for movie buffswho enjoyed the film but the variationscan be listened to as new Wakemancompositions, with their own musicalstrengths.

MOTHER GONG: Robot Woman(Butt 003) Prod: Harry WilliamsonThe Gong story continues many yearsafter Daevid Allen's original concept. The album has a story thread, mosttracks feature a robot woman namedBeta and Gilli Smyth takes her 'part'.The lyrics are much concerned aboutelectronic circuitary and nuclear waras befits the hippy of today and themusic is pleasantly dominated bysynth and saxophone. Some trackswere recorded at last year's Glaston-bury Festival and there is a small butloyal following for the band.

VARIOUS: UK TO .JA: Lovers &Rockers (Solid Groove SGL 101).A collection of commercial reggaesongs from the likes of Eargasm,Tyrone and Alton Ellis. The compila-tion is of a consistently high standardand the album would make good partymaterial. The album is available at thecut-price £3.99 retail price but the

collection is let down by its budget -style sleeve.

SALLY OLDFIELD: Playing In TheFlame (Bronze BRON 536) Prod:Sally Oldfield/Dave Davani/LaurieJayThe second album from Sally Oldfieldand still it sounds too much of athrowback to hippy days to make anykind of dent in today's market. Some-times there are modern touches likesynthesisers and a disco beat - as on'Playing In The Flame' and 'RareLightning' - but even these don't do thetrick. Ms Oldfield sounds like KateBush let loose in Haight Ashbury andthe songs themselves are just tooineffectual to conquer the dated style.

RICKY SCAGGS: Waitin' For TheSun To Shine (Epic EPC 84986)Rated country picker Ricky Scaggsmakes his vocal debut on an albumthat will perhaps do quite well inAmerica but won't mean that willperhaps do quite well in America but

won't mean much here. The voice ispleasant, the material Nashville -soporific and the instrumentals tastefulbut lacking impact. In short there'snothing to elevate this LP above agreat deal of other country releases.

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN: Belo Hori-zonte (WEA 99185) Prod: JohnMcLaughlinMcLaughlin carries his restless searchfor new sounds one step further withhis first album for WEA, recorded inParis with a largely French line-up.Synthesisers now form a backgroundwash of sound for the guitarist toembroider with fast, stacatto runs. Thistime the Indian influences in his recentwork have fallen away, to be replacedby a more latin element, particularlyevident on the title track and a piecerecorded with flamenco star Paco DeLucia called `Manitas D'Oro'.

BLUES BROTHERS: The Best Of(Atlantic K50858) Prod: Bob Tis-chlerOn the strength of consumer responseso far, it seems a bit optimistic to bereleasing a Best Of collection by theBlues Brothers. However, they haveachieved something of a cult following, particularly after the release of theirfilm. There's a contagious goodtimequality about their good-humouredStax-influenced recreations. Songslike 'Rubber Biscuit' and 'I Don't Know'in particular are good for a giggle. Andthey do have an all-star band ofveteran soul men .

HI -DE -HI CAST ALBUM (BBC REC436) Prod: Walter RidleyThe ability of Paul Shane as a singer inthe TV series with the 'Holiday Rock'theme song and anguished version of`I Believe' is already well known.Surprisingly, the rest of the cast canalso hold a tune quite capably, although Simon Cadell has to resort toan impersonation of Rex Harrison.Songs like 'Easy To Love', `I'm AlwaysChasing Rainbows' and `DarkTownPoker Club' have period nostalgia.

MUM REVIEWSJOSE FELICIANO (Motown STML12161) Prod: Berry Gordy-SuzeeIkedaMotown has rescued Feliciano fromthe bring of obscurity, and on hiscomeback album he includes a songentitled 'The Drought Is Over' to signifyhisre-establishment and his debt toBerry Gordy. It's almost a major album, and might well have been had Feli-ciano been allowed to bring his uniqueinterpretative gifts to bear on moreMotown classics like 'I Second ThatEmotion' and 'Ain't That Peculiar'.These are the two outstanding tracks.Nothing else on the album measuresup to them.

JOHNNY G: Water Into Wine(Beggars Banquet BEGA 30) Prod:Bob AndrewsPurchasers of Johnny G's latest outingreceive no less than 27 tracks on theLP proper and the free bonus albumthat the eclectic Londoner has in-cluded in the package - the secondtime running he has employed thistactic. It is all engaging music from anengaging man. He varies his rhythmsbetween R&B and reggae bases andremains chunky but low-key and taste-ful throughout. The LP proper containsa re -working of 'G -Beat', a treatment ofthe 'Skye Boat Song' and a strange buteffective version of King Crimson's'21st Century Schizoid Man' anthem ofold scattered among the origials. Thebonus album is subtitled Pure Beau-jolais with out -takes or rejected singles

on one side and a slice of G's live showon the other. The whole caboodlecomes across full of enjoyment andintegrity and will hopefully reach a wideaudience.VARIOUS: Let The Good TimesRoll/Teen Beat/Doo Pah Poo Ooh/Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind/ In TheStill Of The Night/Only In America/`Til My Dreamin' Comes True/EddieCochran & Gene Vincent/Let's HaveA Party/Summer Means Fun/GoodVibrations/On The Road Again(CGB 1001 to 10012)12 records tracing the history of theUnited Artists. Liberty, Capitol andassociated labels from Fats Domino toThe Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Alan Warnerhas created a superb selection ofcompilations which are being releasedall over Europe in Capitol's goldenjubilee. He takes in the songs of younglove, soul, doo-woop, the golden ageof songwriting, surfing and the bluesrevival not to mention the early rhythmand blues and rock n roll whichchanged the face the popular music. The whole set would probably retailbelow £36 (at a dealer price of £1.82each) and a brief scratch along thesurface of the talent reveals, Jerry LeeLewis, Eddie Cochran, Sandy Nelson,B. Bumble, Ike & Tina Turner, LouRawls, Patti Austin. The IslayBrothers, Bobby Vee, Jonny Burnette,Gene Vincent, Dorsey Burnette, TheBeach Boys. Jan & Dean, Cher, PJProby.
