It is the start of the 2018/2019 Academic Year and ACK’s PR & Marketing Department and Student Life organized a ‘Welcome2ACK’ event where new students and returning ones enjoyed music, food and different activities.

The ‘Welcome2ACK’ event took place in a tent on the football field. It was held from Sunday to Thursday of the first week of the semester. There were various activities and prizes that came from NBK and ACK’s PR & Marketing Department. Prizes varied from winning cash to Apple AirPods, Play-station 4, smart phone and much more.

A member of the Music Club surprised everyone by performing Pop and R&B hits live in the tent.

The ‘Welcome2ACK’ event is always a great way to welcome everyone back and give students and staff fun ways to interact and socialize.

We wish everyone a great semester ahead.

On the 19th of September, Student Life with the help of students organized a farewell party for their beloved colleague Abdulaziz Safar, Coordinator - Student Life, who is known in ACK as “Aziz Teddy” or/and “Teddy”. We asked Teddy to give us a word describing his experience at ACK and this is what he said:

“It all began when I started as a student in ACK in 2008. In 2009, a group of students decided to create a music club. I was co-leader of the club as a start and my friend was the leader. After one year and a half of opening the music club, ACK decided to employ me as their first student worker. I was hired in the Student Affairs Department which used to be called Campus Life. Here we are after 8 years in ACK, it’s been a nice journey. I’ve seen a lot of students graduate, a lot of clubs open up. So, after establishing the club system in ACK, it’s a pleasure to see them all working by themselves now and they don’t need me anymore which is why it’s nice to grow up and pursue something new. I’ll stay in touch with most of the students, my colleagues and everyone I know. I wish everyone the best and I wish ACK the Best.” - Abdulaziz Safar

We also spoke to Teddy’s colleagues and student friends and this is what they had to say:

YOUR BEAUTY

EVERY ONE OF US IS LOOKING FOR HIS/HER SELF BEAUTY. WHETHER YOU ARE A MAN OR WOMAN, WE ALL SEEK A BEAUTIFUL EXTERIOR.

Written by Dalal Al Shatti

Our face is probably the most important aspect of our physical appearance because it’s the first thing that people see. The question is, how can we keep our facial appearance healthy?

Homemade facial night masks can be the answer. Let me give you a few recipes:

Acne and Black Heads Mask You will need :

• 1 spoon of honey • 1 spoon of cinnamon

How to use:

• First mix the ingredients together and put the mixture on your face with a good brush and keep it for 20 minutes.• After 20 minutes, wash your face with warm water then cold water.• Keep using this mask for 2 weeks and you will see good results.

Smoothing Skin Mask

You will need:

• 2 tsp of honey • ½ tsp of crushed turmeric • 1 yolk • ½ tsp of olive oil • ½ tsp of lemon juice

How to use:

• First mix the ingredients together.• Before you apply the mixture, make sure your face is clean and pores are open (by taking a hot shower). • Put the mask on your face for 15 minutes.• Finally, wash your face with hot water then again with cold water.Note: use this mask before you go to bed at night.

At the end, remember, having a healthy looking skin will improve your overall look. See you next month with new beauty advice!

Adventures from the Australia Summer Tour 2018

A group of ACK business and engineering students recently returned from a whirlwind of adventure and unique experiences as part of ACK’s Australia Summer Tour 2018. Organized by the ACK International Office, the two-week, action-packed tour traveled much of Australia’s east coast and included visits to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Rockhampton and Melbourne.

Brisbane

The students arrived in Brisbane and spent time exploring the ‘River City’. Highlights of Brisbane included a day at the world’s oldest and largest koala sanctuary, ‘Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary’, where the students cuddled koalas, fed the kangaroos and emus, and secondly, a field trip to ‘River City Labs’, an entrepreneurship hub started by ‘Sharktank Australia’ judge, Steve Baxter.

Gold Coast

The Gold Coast day trip included a whale watching boat trip where the students were lucky enough to see a pod of whales up-close, as they swam around the boat during their annual migration from Antarctica to northern Australia. Following the boat trip, the group enjoyed lunch at one of Australia’s most famous beaches, Surfers Paradise.

Sydney

Sydney was possibly the most adventurous stop on the tour, with the students climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, touring the Sydney Opera House and speed boating around Sydney Harbour. Civil Engineering student, Hanadi Al Houli, was overwhelmed and impressed learning all about the civil engineering innovation to build both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Another highlight was the international volunteering experience at OzHarvest. Representing ACK, Aliah, Yousuf, Hanadi and Shuail spent the afternoon cooking meals for 150 people in need.

Rockhampton

The tour group was warmly welcomed by ACK’s partner, CQUniversity. The students stayed at the CQUniversity student residences, surrounded by green gardens and kangaroos. After learning about Australian Aboriginal culture and throwing boomerangs (Shuail was an expert by the way), the students jumped on golf buggies to explore the large CQUniversity campus and learn about their innovative teaching & learning methods with MaskEd. The visit to Rockhampton closed with a wonderful ‘Australiana’ themed dinner hosted by CQUniversity. The dinner served all the famous Australian foods, including meat pies, lamingtons and pavlovas. The students enjoyed the evening, eating, chatting with CQUniversity students and listening to a social innovation guest speaker.

Melbourne

The last stop of the tour was Melbourne and it was a busy few days. Melbourne’s city tour included a tram ride, Melbourne’s famous graffiti art and Eureka Skydeck Tower (297 meters above street level and the elevator travels at 9 meters per second!). The students also visited Engineers Australia headquarters to learn more about their role and ThankYou.co, a social entrepreneurship company started by three 19-year old university students.

All in all is was a great cultural and learning experience for the students who loved their two weeks in Australia!

Dusty Weather Survival Guide

• Don’t wear white or black, unless you want your top or pants to come back in another color. Try to wear earthy colors such as brown.

• Aside from washing your hands, make sure you wash your face in order to keep your pores dust-free and clean to avoid many skin problems.

• Wear sunglasses when walking out in the street, to avoid any sand from entering your eyes.

• Avoid wearing your lenses as well as wearing heavy makeup such as mascara as it can lead to dust particles getting stuck on your eyelashes and causing eye irritation.

• If you have allergies from dusty weather, you are better off staying home. However, if you must go out, be sure to wear a medical mask to prevent the dust from entering your system and keep an inhaler with you.

• Don’t wear items of clothing that load up dust. They attract the dust particles and make things look worse. Go for leather or other pieces that can be easily washed.

• Tie your hair up in a bun or a ponytail to prevent frizzy hair.

• You need to shower after passing through a sandstorm. Be sure to shake your head first to get rid of as much sand as you can before showering.

• If you have white furniture around your home, cover it with sheets. The dust usually settles down on the furniture and it’s quite visible on black and white furniture. Be sure to clean the surfaces around your home, such as the bed-side table or coffee tables.

• Do not leave any dishes in the dish holder, put all your kitchen wear in closed cabinets. Dust can enter even from slightly open windows and doors which will contaminate the environment of the house too.

• Put a carpet, or a rolled towel underneath the door to prevent any dust from entering the house. Don’t forget to close all your windows, along with your shutters.

• Postpone the errands you have to do on a dusty day. I know this sounds weird but try to keep your tasks as limited as possible to avoid the dusty weather, unless they are important and need to be done.

• Keep some eye drops with you, in case your eyes get irritated from all the dust. They also help to keep the eyes safe from dehydration which is usually caused by the warm dusty air.

The weather is slowly changing; Here are some tips on how to cope up with dusty weather:
