From the Potentate’s Desk by 2020 Potentate I.S. Carl Thompson
Nobles and Ladies -
I’m so excited to begin my first month as Potentate of Al Kader Shrine. Lady Feather and I have been eagerly anticipating this for a few years and are excited by all the planned opportunities ahead.
For those of you who missed Chief Rabban night, and the video the Cyclowns put together for me (in pure Cyclown fashion), I wanted to go over my priorities for the coming year;
Membership: Of course this is our #1 priority! We are losing far too many Nobles to the black camel than we are replacing them. I want every one of us to
commit to bringing in one new Noble this year to the Shrine. Go to your stated meetings at your Lodge. If it’s been a while since you’ve attended, you may be surprised to see so many younger faces. Why not invite them to a social event? Oriental Band and Demolay have crab feeds coming up. These are some of the most fun events we have - lets share them!
Our second priority is having fun while helping kids. This year I’m going to dial back a bit of the pomp and circumstance, and focus on fellowship and great times with even better friends. If there’s something that you think would make your time at our events more enjoyable - let me or one of our Aides know! I’m starting by pledging to have free child care available at all major events so younger members don’t have to make a choice between participating in their Shrine or paying some other bill.
I’m also excited to announce a joint trip for 2020 and 2021. The Chief Rabban and I have decided to combine our years’ trips into one really amazing one. On page 22, you’ll find a flyer for a 10 day cruise through the Panama Canal! The trip will be January 31 through February 11, 2021. We’ll be stopping in Fort Lauderdale, Grand Turk, Columbia, the Panama Canal, Panama, Costa Rica, and Jamaica aboard the Crown Princess. Put it in your calendar, and join us for this spectacular trip.

Chaplain’s Report by Noble Steven Levin
I would like to address the Nobility with a few brief remarks if I may.
I respectfully wish to thank our impending Potentate Carl Thompson for the very distinct honor of having been asked by him to serve in the position of Chaplain for the coming year.
In addition, please allow me to offer my public thanks to both Nobles Carson Bailey and Kenton Wolfe for the time and material they so graciously shared with me while I have been preparing to try to measure up to the incredible examples they have established during their respective years in that position.
I would in closing this small statement, like to inform the Nobility of my desire to make myself available to all the Nobility twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
Please don’t hesitate for one second if my service to you and your family is ever needed.
Thank you and I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and a joyous new year ahead.

Lincoln County Shrine Club Mark C. Phillips, High Priest & Prophet
On November 22, 2019, Lincoln County Shrine Club held its annual holiday dinner with the ladies at Newport Masonic Lodge, followed by an end-of-year business meeting and election of officers. Nobles Victor Morton and Gregory Armstrong (pictured below) were re-elected Club President and Secretary/Treasurer respectively. Noble Alexander Lundquist, who was initiated in the April 2019 ceremonial, is the Club’s new Vice President.
Legion of Honor by Noble Carey Huckaba
Legion of Honor members turned out in force to participate in the installation of Al Kader’s Legion of Honor North Coast Platoon 2020 officers. A dozen members of Al Kader’s Legion of Honor Mid-Valley Platoon and four of their Ladies made the trip from Salem and the Metro area for the installation of their North Coast Legionnaire brothers on Friday, November 22nd in the Camp 18 Restaurant at MP 18, US Hwy. 26 between Elsie and Necannicum Junction.
North Coast Platoon officers installed were: Commander Harold “Ted” Johnson, Adjutant Carey Huckaba, Finance Officer Jesse Exton and Quartermaster Larry Evey. Lt. Commander-elect Victor Kee was excused because of illness.
The officers were installed by Al Kader Legion of Honor Adjutant Curtis Hansen.
The Mid-Valley platoon installation will be on Wednesday, December 11th at 11:30 a.m. in the Scottish Rite Center in Salem.
(Left to Right) Finance Officer Jesse Exton, Adjutant Carey Huckaba, Commander Ted Johnson, Quartermaster Larry Evey.
Tualatin Valley Shrine Club by Noble Herb Richardson
If you were not at the Shrine Club Christmas event in December then you missed a great evening out. I am just assuming that because it has not even happened yet as of this writing. That is one of the disadvantages of having to get your story in before the 10th of each month. Never-the-less I will bet it was a nice time had by all. According to my sources we were supposed to have a very special seasonal buffet prepared by the Peppermill Restaurant and I will imagine it met all our expectations.
Al Kader Oasis - January 2020 5
For the December meeting each member and spouse was asked to bring a wrapped present with a value of $20.00 or less. We were then going to have a “pick or swipe” gift exchange. We’ve done this in years past and it was always a lot of fun. As you may recall, many organizations that collect toys for Christmas do not have a distribution system to get toys directly to needy children. They do mass distribution to charitable organizations which are more in contact with the child or group of children such as the Shriners Hospital. So I’m thinking, maybe we should just take the toy collections straight to the Shriners Hospital? Cut out the middle man, so to speak.
At the November meeting final elections for Tualatin Valley Shrine Club Officers for the year 2020 were conducted. So congratulations to President Ralph Jubb, 1st Vice President I.S. Art Hermanson, 2nd Vice President (open), Secretary Steve Levin, Treasurer Rod Hevland, and Chaplain (by appointment) Frank Brewington, all of whom were probably reinstalled during the December meeting.
The next business meeting and dinner will be at the Peppermill Restaurant on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 1800. Come early for some social time. And don’t forget to bring those bottles and cans for our fund drive. If anything changes between now and then I’ll let you know by mail, email or phone call.
My email address is still [email protected] and my home phone is 503-691-6711.
Happy New Year.
Central Oregon Shrine Club by IS Dave Johnson
At COSC’s regular monthly meeting, Chief Rabban (Elect) Terry Griffith swore in the Club’s 2020 slate of officers.
Left to Right: Chief Rabban (Elect) Terry Griffith, President Scott Brasher, 1st Vice President Jason Smith, 2nd Vice President David Blair, Secretary Matt Alexander, Treasurer John Pinckney, and Outer Guard Bill Quier.
The weather and icy roads kept all but 23 members and Ladies. We enjoyed a great Holiday dinner of Prime Rib and Chicken. Following dinner, the Ladies exchanged “white elephant” gifts.
Forget Me Nots by Lady Judy Alley
Taking a break from the turkey and cranberry meals offered at every home this time of year, the Forget Me Nots enjoyed a lovely Italian lunch at Ernesto’s. Making it even better, our Potentate Todd joined us and shared news of upcoming activities.
We are all looking forward to the Christmas Social! No real business was acted upon, but we all shared our plans for the holiday. Though widows, we are a lucky bunch and this time of the year really brings that home.
Next meeting will be January 22nd at the Milwaukie McGrath’s.

Greeters By Noble Don Slezak
Time for another meeting to have all the officers installed as required. At this time I don’t know who our rep is or what dates are available. In fairness to all parties and with an eye on the weather I think we should plan on meeting February 11, 2020 at 6 p.m. at the Shrine Center for the Installation of Officers and to start planning for the 75th Annual Al Kader Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held August 13, 2020 at the Oregon City Golf Course with a shotgun start at 9 am.
The Installation for Al Kader is January 4, 2020. Oasis is 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m.. The Greeters have their normal duties on the door in our formal uniform.
A Stated Meeting is scheduled for January 27, 2020.
Plan ahead for the Superbowl Party and Chili Cook Off on February 2, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Shrine Center
Have a Happy New Year!
Al Kader Patrol Lou Westwick, Past Patrol Captain
The Al Kader Patrol had a fun night out at the Oak Knoll Winery for a comedy night in November at the Hillsdale Winery. Noble Bill Blankinship brought up the idea at our October Patrol monthly meeting. He thought we needed to get together and have a fun night out. We made reservations for Friday November 15, 2019. Five of the Patrol members and their Shrine Ladies attended the night out. Patrol Captain Dennis Harris, Past Captains Gary Garde, Rich Blizzard, Lou Westwick and our secretary Bill Blankinship and their Shrine Ladies were there for the evening. The show was well worth the trip, even if Lou got lost following his GPS unit.
At Our December Patrol meeting we thought that we would like to do something similar every few months. Maybe take in a theater show or something that we can do as a group. We would like other Units join us so look for something in your Oasis.
Our Annual Patrol Installation Dinner will be at the Stockpot Broiler in Beaverton on January 5, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.. If you want to attend please email Cindy Harris (AKA) Jennifer at [email protected] if you would like to attend by Dec 23, 2019. Cost will be $45, and menu is, Fillet of Salmon, Beef Tenderloin and Double Cut Pork Chop.
Concert Band by Noble Jeff Zimmerman
Happy New Year!
The Concert Band was very pleased for the opportunity to entertain the Nobility and guests at the Christmas Social last month. We hope it brought some musical joy to your holiday season.
But, now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays are behind us, after putting away the decorations and rearranging the furniture back to where it was before the tree was brought in, and the special china is back in the hutch until the next big occasion, now is the time to relax and reflect on the past year. What was great about the last twelve months? Wwhat would you do a little differently the next time? Who did you not get together with that you were hoping to spend more time with? Looking back at the immediate past and considering the highlights and low-lights is the best starting point for making the immediate future what you want it to be. Perhaps plan to repeat the things you did last year that made you happy or excited, with enough changes to keep it new and exciting. Also, plan to not repeat the events that didn’t bring you joy or enlightenment; or at least change the event to allow you to move it into the positive column.
Some people refer to this exercise as New Year’s resolutions, others call it taking charge of your life. By either title, there are right ways and wrongs ways to go about controlling your future. Life changes should be instigated in small bites; a major change needs to be broken down into small, achievable goals. And your changes need to be things you want to do for yourself or your loved ones, not because of social or peer pressure.

16 Al Kader Oasis - January 2020
Your goals must be reachable and meaningful. Your goals should be smart - and S.M.A.R.T. This acronym, coined in the Management Review, means Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. There are many sources of help in setting and reaching personal goals, one doesn’t have to search very hard to find the path to obtaining your goals that works best for you.
Let’s apply the SMART method to a goal likely to come from my target audience; let’s say that in the coming year you want to reinvigorate a creative talent that gave you great joy in the past, you want to play music again!
You want to specifically start playing the instrument you played in High School and maybe through College? Just bring your old instrument (or newly rented one) to the Al Kader Concert Band, we’ll help you get started again, no matter how basic the starting point is. As you practice with the band and at home, your progress will be easily measurable as you rapidly gain range and tone quality through your efforts. With help from other band members, achievable goals will be set as you gain confidence and ability, and the relevance of your advancement will become very evident as you harmonize with the rest of band to produce exciting sounds that are enjoyable for all to hear. The decision to re-capture your joy of making music is time-bound in that there is no time like the present to begin, and you can set your own timeline to measure your progress to getting back the musical skills you had in school and then advancing them well beyond. The Al Kader Concert Band is here to help you reach your goals and we’d love to have you join us. Just ask any band member, leave your phone number at the office, or call me (503) 359-1927.
Fine for now.

by Dereesa Reid, Executive Director
As we move into the holiday season, it is a time for gratitude and celebration at Shriners Hospital for Children — Portland. Thanks to all of your hard work, we continue to be very busy in the inpatient unit, operating room, as well as our outpatient clinic. In October, we set a new record high in the number of patients seen in our outpatient clinic. Our pediatric fracture and sports injury clinic, open to walk-in patients 5 days per week, continues to remain popular. Did you know that our Portland outpatient clinic hosts seven (7) multidisciplinary clinics? In each of these multidisciplinary clinics, Shriners physicians, clinical staff, as well as pediatric specialists from the community and OHSU collaborate on the best treatment plan for patients. These multidisciplinary teams host specialty clinics ranging from: neuromuscular, skeletal dysplasia, metabolic, spasticity, arthrogryposis, cleft
lip and palate, and spinal bifida. It’s no surprise that our geographic reach continues to grow due to our unique services. For example, the Portland Shriners Hospital has nine (9) clinical drug trials providing the latest drug therapy for certain neuromuscular conditions. Our skeletal dysplasia program as well as bloodless surgery protocols are attracting more patients from other states. Today, we are serving more kids in more places throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. More importantly, we continue to provide safe, outstanding quality of care. My sincerest thanks to our physicians and entire Portland Shriners Hospital Team for all that you do for our patients and our hospital.

PROPOSED BYLAW CHANGES
It is the recommendation of Shriners International that the Al Kader Bylaws be corrected as follows:
• Article II -§323.13 should be changed to §323.12, because there is no §323.13.
• Article IV, Section 8 -§325.9 should be changed to §325.10, which is the correct section for election of Representatives, and "Imperial Bylaws" should be corrected to "bylaws of Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation.
• Article IV, Section 9 -§325.9 should be changed to §325.11, which is the correct section for Election Regulations.
• Article V, Section 2 -"The Imperial Council" should be changed to "Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation.
• Article VII, Section 1-§332.1(i) should be changed to §332.1(e), which is the correct section for changes to initiation fees.
• Article VII, Section 3, (A) -"the Imperial Council" should be changed to "Shriners International", which is the correct identity of the corporation, and "Imperial By-laws" should be changed to "bylaws of Shriners International", for the same reason.
• Article VII, Section 5, (A)-"Article 23 -§323.12" should be changed to "Article 32 -§332.6", which is the correct section for life memberships for Meritorious Service.
• Article VIII, Section 3 -"Article 27 -§327.8(d) and" should be stricken because that section relates to notices for meetings of the Board of Directors and is unrelated to budgeting.
