can't be that bad.Look at Opportunities AheadCWM has a number of wonderful opportuni-ties for 2009. Many of the new die castingdies built in 2008 will see production in 2009.Since January 1st, we have received addi-tional new tooling.

Along with the opportunities comes thedifficult task of reducing our internal costs sothat we continue to attract new work. Bill Britton, Former CWMerBill Britton, 88, a CWM guard who provided acordial welcome to visitors for 10 years, diedin October. He is survived by his wife Betty, a14-year CWM employee now retired, two sons,Barry and Kent, and three grandchildren.

Bill was an avid fan of both the St. LouisCardinals and the Fighting Illini. He alsoliked to fish, play golf, and in general enjoythe outdoors.

Betty and Bill retired together in 1998. �

This 10-point OEM checklist can be ahelpful guide to making the optimumsupplier decision for successful re-sults in producing a new housing orcomponent as a custom die casting.

A careful review of a prospective supplier’swebsite will give you many of the requiredanswers; an unannounced plant visit will fillin the blanks, confirm any assumptions andprovide confidence in your final conclusion.

Will you be asked the right ques-tions at the start of your project?Request a comprehensive description of theinitial engineering consultations that will beheld with your team. They should be clearlyaimed at insuring that all details of yourproject are fully understood and that thesupplier’s preplanning and analysis will as-sure meeting every important specification. Can you count on being given fullyobjective alloy recommendations?If you are not initially certain of which diecasting alloy is the best choice for your de-sign, can you have confidence in receivingan unbiased recommendation? Currentsupplier production in all of the most popu-lar alloys in Al, Mg and Zn will help assuresuch confidence.� Are pre-production computer sim-ulations offered for your design?Does the die caster offer a high-order of in-house process simulation technology, suchas the advanced Magmasoft® die cast soft-ware system. Accurate predictions fromCAD files of final metal flow, prior to die de-

sign and construction, will reduce leadtimes, improve quality and lower total costs. � Can you take advantage of inte-grated in-house prototyping?Where prototypes are required, can they beskillfully, efficiently and rapidly supplied, ei-ther as billet machined and/or as RP ABSmodels? In-house prototyping model datacan also be used to speed and reduce thecosts of required final-finishing operations. Are you guaranteed the highest-quality tool steel for your project?Can you receive documentation of testingand certification that the tool steel used foryour project meets NADCA* standards, toinsure the impact strength and long life ofthe die steel you will be purchasing.� Will only certified quality alloys beused in the production of your part?Certified aluminum, magnesium or zinc alloys used in the production of your diecast parts are guaranteed to be free of im-purities. Such assurance is essential to theintegrity of your castings and their long-term performance in your product.� Will your casting production re-ceive automated process monitoring?In volume die casting production, auto-mated process-monitoring systems can as-sure you of consistent part-to-part qualityand the lowest possible reject rate; 6-sigmareports should be available if requested.� Is experienced post-casting CNCmachining available to you in-house?With designs not feasible for net-shape diecasting production, you will want assurance
