Time to burn rubber Racing fans will rejoice this coming Labor Day as some of the biggest racing action of the
year arrives at California Speedway. We highlight the two big days of racing on page 8.
Understandably, this event may get you itching to try your own hand at burning up a track.
Before you hock your home to buy a high-performance car and pit crew, you’ll be happy to
hear that kart racing has arrived in the Inland Empire to answer your prayers. Kart racing is
the “little league” of auto racing and is so accessible even children can do it. For more on
where you can get strapped in, see our article starting on page 9.
You may notice that we’ve added a few new sections to this issue:“For the Kids” and
“Golf.” We are responding to reader requests with more information on what you want. Look
for these sections to grow in the future. If you want to put in your two-cents, fill out our
reader response form on page 11.You may even win a free subscription to IER!
As usual, have a good time this month!

Forty Years and Still Horsin’ Around!
The June gloom is now a distantmemory. The hottest days ofthe summer are upon us andtaking a break by taking in thecool waves of the Pacific is the
perfect way to spend a summer weekendday. Better yet, there is an alternative tofighting traffic on the 91 Freeway andsearching for a parking spot.
The alternative is to take the BeachTrain, which is offered by the RiversideCounty Transportation Commission (RCTC).The Beach Train will run every Saturdayand Sunday between Aug. 1 and Aug. 22..Additional trains will run on Sept. 18, Sept.25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. The round-trip fare is$16 for adults and $11 for kids under 16.
“The train itself is an attraction for manypeople because it allows people to socializeand make new friends,” said RCTCExecutive Director Eric Haley.
“That’s especially true when the trainis headed to the beach on a warm sum-
mer day.”In addition to providing summer recre-
ation trips, Haley also hopes that positiveexperiences on the Beach Train will con-vince people to take the train during theweek too.
“For many people the Beach Train offersthe first opportunity to take a train inSouthern California,” said Haley. “Oncepeople take the train to the Beach, theystart considering whether they can take thetrain to work too.”
Metrolink commuter train service, whichprovides its trains to RCTC for the BeachTrain, offers commuter service from SanBernardino and Riverside Counties to LosAngeles and Orange Counties. Stations inOrange and Los Angeles Counties are locat-ed next to major worksites and can providean attractive alternative to fighting freewaytraffic.

So, you want to be a race car driver ...The roar of the engines, the smell of burning rubber, the thrill of speed ... experiencing
NASCAR racing at the California Speedway this Labor Day weekend may be enough to get
you thinking,“Yeah, I could do that.”
Before you run off and hire a pit crew, however, you may want to check your options.
The Inland Empire offers numerous opportunities for you to satisfy your racing cravings.
Kart racing isn’t your traditional go-cart, however.Attaining speeds of up to 100mph,
modern kart racing is considered the “minor leagues” of NASCAR racing, offering a similar

A mobile zoo coming to youNorthern
California's loss is the
Inland Empire's gain.
Art and Nancy True
enjoyed over 12 years
of success with their
mobile zoo service in
Northern California.
Then, they decided to
"slow the pace down"
and relocated to the
Palm Springs area,
specifically Sky Valley.
But they brought
with them their expe-
rience and their life-
long love of animals.
Their Zoo 4U, a
mobile zoo, has
become a party favorite for any special occasion, including birthdays, churches, schools
and corporate events. The "zoo" currently consists of chickens, rabbits, ducks, goats, a
pot-bellied piglet, Florida tortoise, frogs, snakes and lizards. In addition to the petting por-
tion of their business, they also give one-hour educational lectures.
The Zoo 4U mobile unit has air conditioning and lighting for any weather or time. For
information, call 760-288-4455.

El Monte woman wins Athens Olympic vacation
Maria Pineda already had passport in hand when
Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Chief Operating
Officer Joe DeRosa phoned her Monday evening
(July 5) at her El Monte residence with the news
that she had been chosen as the winner of an all-
expenses paid dream trip for two to next month’s
Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
As part of its six-week Athens Summer Games
Giveaway promotion for Club Fantasy player’s club
card holders, Fantasy Springs was awarding one
lucky player with the trip that includes round-trip
airfare, luxury lodging on the Queen Mary II, tickets
for six days of Olympic competition including the
opening ceremonies and the beauty and lure of
Ancient Greece. Fortunately for the Pinedas, con-
test rules did not require that the winner be pres-
ent to claim the prize.
Pineda, 60, who works in quality control for a
paper bag manufacturer, and her husband, Fred, 66,
a retired electrician and mechanic, recently secured
the passports to prepare for a weekend getaway in
Baja.
“We’re so excited about winning this dream
vacation,” said Fred Pineda, who spoke to casino
officials by phone because his wife was too excited
to speak.“We can’t wait to see the Olympic Games
and tour Athens to experience the history of Greece.”
Fred Pineda admitted the couple had never previously won a prize of any significance,
but were hoping to change their luck by securing entries in the contest.
On behalf of his wife, Maria, FredPineda of El Monte (center) acceptsthe Athens Summer Olympic GamesDream Vacation prize from FantasySprings Resort Casino COO JoeDeRosa (left) and CEO JamesMcKennon (right).

Catch a modern-day troubadourMichael Ryan is an entertainer in the old
sense of the word, a self-styled “troubadour”
who brings his guitar talents to intimate set-
tings.

weekly appearances in Claremont and concert
performances, Ryan brings his stylings to many
audiences.
A true Renaissance musician, Ryan brings a
range of talents to his fans, including classical
Spanish pieces, Irish folk songs, light blues

At the Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater
in Claremont, audiences enjoy Ryan’s music
while they dine on a formal meal prior to
watching a musical. The setting is perfect to
Ryan’s style of play, a personal forum where he
can connect with his audience.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following are articles in our ongoing Summerseries of weight-loss success stories.
Just six short weeks ago I never would have thought I could
accomplish what I have. Thanks to Chris and the Curves
Challenge I have lost almost 15 pounds and numerous inches and
my clothes fit me once again. I am on the right road to being thin
again.
Until six years ago, I had been thin all my life. Then, I experi-
enced several back-to-back life changing events and I began to
eat as a way to deal with the stress. I “learned” how to comfort
myself with food. I continued to “nurture” myself with food until I
weighed more than I could imagine.
The day after Chris opened her Downtown Riverside Curves
I joined. For almost 1 1/2 years I exercised regularly at Curves
and learned how to incorporate exercise into my daily life. I did-
n’t lose much weight; I still had not learned how to control my
eating. I am a Registered Dietician and I knew how to lose weight
and keep it off.Why couldn’t I?
When Chris announced the first Curves Challenge, I jumped
at the chance to join. I signed up but the closer the start date
came the more anxious I became. During the five days prior to
the “Big Challenge” I psyched myself up using a lot of positive
self-talk: “You can do this, Laurie. You have accomplished much in
you life; you will be able to accomplish this, too.You want to suc-
ceed bad enough, you will be successful!”
And, I have been successful, thanks to Michelle and Chris and
my Curves Challenge buddies. During the Weekly Lesson #5 I
had a revelation. I learned that to be truly happy and able to cope
with life’s challenges and be successful at losing weight and keep-
ing it off, I had to learn how to nurture myself in meaningful ways
that lead to high self-esteem and self-actualization. I had to find
positive ways to “nurture” myself rather than relying on food as
temporary “nourishment.” I finally realized that I must do the fol-
lowing nurturing activities every day: read my “Daily Affirmation”
out loud every morning; put my needs ahead of others’ for
awhile; do something nice for myself; share my feelings and needs
with my family and friends; remind myself of what I am thankful
for and always let God be there for me; take a walk outside and
enjoy the nature around me when I am stressed and feel the urge
to eat.

Lisa Souza joined Curves in Oct. of 2003. She started out
wanting to lose weight and become healthier. Little did she know
where this path would take her. She at first focused on just the
fitness part and lost six pounds and 8 inches. She then decided
that working out just wasn’t enough, so she joined Curves’
“You’ve Got the Power” weight loss challenge.
Lisa has now participated in two six-week Challenges and is
planning on a third this fall. With her hard work and Curves fit-
ness and weight loss programs she has now lost a total of 31
pounds and 37.5 inches. But she hasn’t stopped there.
Lisa still has her own personal goal of losing 30 more pounds,
but now she is a Curves staff member and is inspiring others to
reach their goals as well.
Congratulations, Lisa!
