EastSide Story Oct - Dec 2013

Hello Forest Lawn,

Welcome to our Forest Lawn Community Association Newsletter. We hope to keep you informed of events happening in and around our community and maybe even inspire you to join us on our journeys!

This past year has been a hectic one for sure. We have seen two Annual General Meetings complete with elections for executive positions, and I am proud to say that as of May 30th I was voted your new President of FLCA. Since the last AGM we have been off to the races running for all we are worth!

In June we organized ourselves and settled in, setting up protocols to help speed up our response time to keep up with community demands! Just to reference, the amount of hall rentals has increased quite a bit – so if you are looking to book for an event in the future – call in advance to make sure to save your spot!

In July, we joined in with the International Avenue BRZ Stampede Breakfast and helped serve over 3000 people! Then in August, we brought together everyone we could to help build our fantastic brand-new Playground at 8 Ave and 52nd Street – a big shout out to all the volunteers and organizations that pulled together to help out in this endeavour!

In September, we started with our Charity Casino on the 12th & 13th. This Casino happens to be our major breadwinner which

allows us to cover the maintenance and hall expenses, plus allows us to serve you, our community – and I must give a big thanks to everyone who volunteered with it and helped make it a great success! We followed that up as we celebrated Calgary’s Playground Day on the September 21st with the Grand Opening party for our New Playground. At this we served over 300 people – it was a huge success. Our Ward 10 Alderman, Mr. Andre Chabot and our Mayor, Mr. Naheed Nenshi were both in attendance – and you guessed it, a big shout out to all the people who pulled together to help make this event the success that it was!

Now we are into October. On the 6th we have our Forest Lawn Community Clean-Up. We will be hauling as much of the unwanted garbage and recyclable materials that we can, free of charge. Later in the month, on the 26th we will be having our Kids Halloween Party – should be lots of fun!

Of course the future brings many more activities; we are hoping to start up a Saturday Fun Cards and are looking for volunteers to help get that off the ground! Not to mention that Christmas is not far around the corner, so there is lots of planning to do for our Kids party! If you’re interested in volunteering and helping out, the more the merrier as they say, just drop me a line on our email at [email protected].

Until then, let’s keep our spirits alive and our community strong!

Our Casino fundraiser this year was held on September 12 and 13. It was a success with volunteers from our association filling the positions as well as our friends from around the city who came out to help. We had fun and enjoyed the free meals. It wouldn’t have been such a huge success without our volunteers. Thank you all for volunteering. Linda Petroff, Forest Lawn Community Association Casino Director

Summer Camp Reconnects Kids with Nature“Outdoors In” held a Nature Connec-tions Camp for kids in the Greater Forest Lawn Area this past July. We utilized the beautiful Valley View Park and Emmanuel Community Church as our base camp. The children had the opportunity to connect with a vari-ety of natural communities including pond-life, birds, amphibians and rep-tiles. Special guest were brought each day to enhance the fun factor! This camp was sponsored by a local orga-nization, Golder Associates, and pro-vided the children with a wonderful summertime program. Outdoors In plans to run the camp again next sum-mer so look for the posters in local schools and community centres and stay in contact with Outdoors In on their Facebook page or contact Judy at [email protected]. artBOX on 17E

A transformation from an empty storefront to a vibrant art hub.

Big changes are happening at the site of the old Mill’s Paint building, located at 1807 42 Street SE. The site has been vacant for a number of years now, so the International Avenue BRZ and Calgary Arts Development Authority (CADA), have decided to put the site to good use as an “arts pop-up.” The arts pop-up is a temporary fixture that we believe will put life into the site and help to drive the revitalization process by bringing the arts community to International Avenue. It’s a win-win situation, as the space will also bring arts and culture to the street, providing studios along with a space for established and emerging artists to display their artwork. The Art Box on 17E will also host theatrical performances and much more.

The official launch of the “Art Box on 17E” was held on Thursday, October 3. A formal dinner was held, with a Peter Seller “The Party” theme. As well, artists were able to learn more about accessing the space along with some of CADA’s funding opportunities. The other goal of the space is to create an artist hub where vitality and artistic talent can flourish in east Calgary, building a platform for the team who are attempting to fundraise to build a performing arts centre at 26 Street and 17th Avenue SE. (See International Avenue Arts and Culture Centre for more information.) Already a number of activities have taken place. I-Robot, a production by Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre, delighted audiences from September

11 – 22. Other theatre companies have also expressed interest and we are excited to learn about the many talented people that live in the community and have ideas as well. For more information please call the International Avenue BRZ office at 403-248-7288, www.internationalavenue.ca or like us on facebook for more updates. International Avenue BRZ is a non-profit corporation formed by the business community to improve, and revitalize the area. They are funded by a levy on all businesses in the area with a budget set by the business community. The mission of the BRZ is to promote, improve and create a more pleasant community in which to shop and live.

Phyllis Wheaton FLCA Vice President The end of September saw our kids settling back into the routine of school and what a host of great elementary and high schools we have in our district! It has been said that the key to solving poverty, bringing peace and understanding to our world is through education. The ability to read and write and use mathematics is something that’s easy to take for granted. Knowledge is power and with education comes opportunity. Did you know that more people on the planet

cannot read nor write than can? We are fortunate to live in a country where education is held high as a priority.

October is a time of harvest and thanksgiving, when we reflect on our prosperity and abundance here in Canada. When you sit down with your family to give thanks over Thanksgiving, remember this gift of education. Also remember to vote at the upcoming City elections Monday, October 21, when school trustees will also be voted in. These candidates commit to serving the cause of

education, so take some time to meet them by phone or online. Then use another gift... your vote, to elect the person of your choice.

Give thanks this Thanksgiving, for our education system and be an active part of a healthy democracy and mark your ballot. Your vote is also powerful. Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Everyone Working TogetherBy the time this newsletter is published, our October 6 Community Clean–up will have wrapped up for another year. We will be enjoying the sense of accomplishment and freedom of clutter from purging our homes, our garages, backyards and basements. Since our free membership drive began just weeks ago, people have been contributing and ideas are pouring in on how we can continue to beautify our community spaces. An FLCA Giant Garage Sale, a back lane recycling weekend, a playground cleanup along with our kids, and an apple orchard for residents to share in the harvest and turn into pies and jellies... all are possibilities that can turn into a future accomplishment. But it takes the energy of minds, hearts and bodies to make them a real-ity.

Think about joining our group of enthusiastic members in your Forest lawn Community Association and increase our pride in our neighbor-hood. It’s so much fun when we do it together!

Come Visit Us! Our Church is a small congregation that is growing and we want to invite you to join us for worship Sundays at 10 a.m. The ministry of St Luke’s began in August 1913 and still continues today. Our mission statement is “Being grounded in Holy scripture, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and centered in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior, our parish is called to a ministry of: feeding the hungry, encouraging the broken hearted, healing the sick, and making disciples, all to the glory of God.” In everything we do, we desire to teach God’s Word faithfully, and to build up the church to help reach out into the world locally and globally. We have a Christmas Eve Service at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24 to celebrate the birth of Jesus, as well as a quieter, contemplative service at 10 a.m. on Dec. 25 to give thanks for God’s great Gift to us. The stresses of the season come from the commercialism that drowns out the simplicity and joy of meeting together as believers to celebrate Christ’s birth. We invite people to experience the peace and joy of the season with us. If you are unable to join us on Sundays or for the holiday season please check out our website, as we show our upcoming services and events, in addition to posting our Sunday sermons. Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Community Association reps, volunteers and local families were on hand for the opening of Forest Lawn’s newest playground at 52 St and 14 Ave. The playground was a joint project of the City of Calgary Recreation and the Forest Lawn Commu-nity Association. The playground is proving to be a hit with local families!

To Everything There is a Season...Fall has arrived and now is the time to get your yard ready for the winter so that the spring clean-up is less tedious and the lawn, plants, trees and shrubs are healthier.

Grass: Grass must be less than six inches (15 cm) tall according to the Community Standards Bylaw, but three inches is optimal. Late fall is the best time to apply fresh seed to renew a lawn; the seed lies dormant under the snow and germinates the following spring with the moisture of the melt.

Leaves: Raking the lawn ensures your grass won’t suffocate under a burden of fallen leaves. Remember that under the Community Standards Bylaw, it is illegal to burn leaves and yard waste in Calgary.

Weeds: According to the latest version of the Alberta Weed Control Regulation, weeds are now divided into two groups: noxious and prohibited noxious. The growth of noxious weeds must be controlled and prohibited

http://www.wheatlandcounty.ca/files/ID%20Book%202010%20%20-%20Final%20-%20Copy.pdf

noxious weeds must be destroyed. Dandelions are not considered weeds but grass, and should be dealt with accordingly. The Oxeye Daisy (see photograph) is an example of a noxious weed commonly found in Calgary yards this year. Fall is the best time to get rid of weeds so they don’t surprise you in the spring.

Plants: Leave perennials standing until next spring, but remove fallen fruit and leaves as these may house disease-causing organisms that can rise again next spring for a renewed assault. The City of Calgary Healthy Yards program provides guidelines for beautiful and healthy yards by using an environmentally friendly approach to yard, lawn and garden care.

Trees and shrubs: Keep trees and shrubs on your property trimmed so they don’t interfere with pedestrians or vehicles. Consult the Street Bylaw for further information.

Reduce watering of trees and shrubs in the fall, but give all evergreens one heavy watering as close to freeze-up as possible. This will prevent dehydration over the winter.

For more information about yard maintenance, visit the new and more user-friendly City of Calgary website at calgary.ca and search “Bylaws.”

Enjoy the fall and its colours!

Veggies: 1 ½ lb. Carrots (sliced) ½ Green Pepper (sliced) 1 med. Onion (sliced) Sauce: ½ can Tomato Soup ½ cup Vegetable Oil ½ tsp. Salt ¼ tsp. Black Pepper ½ tsp. Dry Mustard ½ cup White Sugar ½ cup White Vinegar Cook carrots al dente, drain, add Green Pepper & Onion while Carrots are still hot. Cover with sauce. Put the Veggies in (easy-serve-size) jars and then pour sauce over.

Will keep in fridge for 2 weeks.

Have you noticed cats wandering near your home? Consider this: on aver-age, female cats have three litters of 4-6 kittens a year! That’s up to 18 kittens per female cat! These kittens often remain unspayed/neutered, living on the streets. Within only a few months, they too are able to produce kittens, further increasing the community cat population.

MEOW Foundation is a local charity offering Calgary’s only Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program specifically designed to assist feral cats and decrease the home-less cat population in our city. MEOW humanely traps, spays/neuters, vacci-nates and microchips feral cats and then returns them to their communities. Community caregivers provide them with food, water and shelter. TNR is the only humane solution that allows feral cats to continue living out their lives while controlling the homeless cat population. If you’re interested in learning more about MEOW Foundation, their Trap-Neu-ter-Return program, or other services, please visit www.meowfoundation.com.

A Place of Pilgrimage

by P. Wheaton

Millions of pilgrims travel around the world to shrines and temples in the Holy Land, Mecca or Nepal, just to name a few. On their journey they experience awe and reverence and are spiritually filled by these sacred places. To take a pilgrimage means to take a journey; to visit a place of moral or spiritual significance.

Take a pilgrimage of your own to a sacred place of remembrance and reverence right here at home, in Calgary.

Our Stones of Signal Hill in Calgary’s SW is such a place. Behind the old Zeller’s building is a staircase leading to a walkway and more stairs. Fieldstones were carried up the hill almost 100 years ago and arranged in giant numbers. Walk and remember the boys and men who placed these stones in their battalion numbers in the summers of 1915-16.

Here they lived, in Sarcee Training Camp, preparing for battle across the pond.

Farm boys, clerks, and men with young families, cowboys and new immigrants; all felt the pull to defend and serve.

Many didn’t return and those who did fought to have this historical landmark, to them a sacred landmark, designated a Heritage Site. They fought hard for they knew that these numbers in stone were a reminder that they were here and that they and their fallen brothers would not be forgotten.

Take the pilgrim’s walk to this place. Be silent. Listen. Think of the families of these soldiers who suffered the loss of their loved one. Read the story boards erected along the path. Learn. Pause. Say a prayer. Their hands touched these stones so long ago. They were here.

Take your girlfriend. Take your husband. Take your kids. Take a pilgrimage to a place of reverence and importance, right here in our city. Take a pilgrimage to the Stones of Signal Hill.

Jesus Church Forest Lawn wants to thank the many people who attended our end of summer festival on September 15 at Holy Trinity Elementary School. Fun was had by all with face painting, bouncy house/slide, ice cream, food, music, and a message of hope. We are excited about starting a new church called Jesus Church (an outreach of Centre Street Church). We will meet at 2pm every Sunday at Holy Trinity School throughout the year, and have Bible studies at another location mid week. Everyone is welcome, and we will have coffee/juice available before and after the services, to get to know one another. Pastor Lawrence Irwin 403-520-2684 [email protected]

Back to school safety

Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students of some basic road safety tips as streets become busier with the return of the school year. Pedestrians and motorists each have an important role to play- road safety is a shared responsibility.

Around school buses• Flashing amber lights mean a bus is

slowing down to stop. Motorists should do likewise.

• No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP when approaching a school bus with activated flashing red lights - unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway from you.

• Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.

Motorists• Avoid talking on cell phones, texting,

or any other behavior that diverts your attention away from driving.

• Give right of way to pedestrians who have activated overhead crossing lights or who are waiting to cross from a street corner.

• Remember it is illegal to pass vehicles, other than those that are parked, in school zones or playground zones during posted hours.

Pedestrians• Cross only at marked crosswalks or

street corners that have clear visibility from all directions.

• Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the street.

• When activating overhead crossing lights, pause before stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions have come to a complete stop.

• Stay within the crosswalk lines until fully clear of the road way.

• Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop.

• If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing.

• Remember: children learn by observing you. By teaching them safe crossing habits as early as possible you can reduce the chance your child may be involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.
