Editorial�Edit

Naturally�this�time�of�the�year.many.people.seem.

to.be.winding.down.and.getting.ready.to.celebrate,.all. in.

light.of.the.upcoming.festive.and.holiday.season..For.many.

it’s.that.time.of.the.year.to.spend.with.family,.friends.and.

loved.ones..While. for. those. incarcerated. it. is.usually. the.

most.challenging.time.of.the.year,.with.memories.and.hope.

of.being.able.to.see.familiar.warm.faces.some.day.being.

the.only.source.of.comfort..However.we also hope that this magazine shall be a reminder of their fruitful progress in becoming positive contributing citizens.. This. edition.

of.Inside.Out.captures.a.continuous.reflection.of.hope.and.

strength.for.many.of.those.who.contributed.to.this.edition.

During. a. workshop. on. anger. management. participants.

understood.the.need.to.develop.positive.traits.and.habits.

even. in. those.times.when.anger.seems.to.be.the.easiest.

manner.to.react.to.a.situation..This.workshop.highlighted.

that.in.each.one.of.us.irrespective.of.the.choices.we.make.

we are able to tap into positive traits. that. are.

within.us.and.develop.those.in.order.to.be.better.people.

Through.tracking.their.own.life’s.participants.were.further.

able.to.map.out.distinct.periods.in.their.life.that.they.believe.

had. the. greatest. impact. to. their. personal. development..

Participants.reflected.upon.the.happiest.times.in.their.life’s.

with.most.pointing.out.to.a.death.of.the.loved.one.or.going.

to.prison.as.the.lowest.period.in.their.lives.

Putting the pieces of one’s life back together.is.

not.always.easy.but.it.is.nevertheless.important.to.realise.

that. even. when. our. lives. seem. disjointed. the. pieces. will.

fit.together.when.we.see.ourselves.as.whole.people..This.

understanding. is. reflected. in. a. puzzle. of. life. and. values.

created.by.Young.in.Prison.female.participants..

A life of freedom even behind bars is possible.and.

no. one. understands. this. better. than. our. participants..

During.one.of.the.workshops.participants.were.able.to.see.that.

irrespective.of.the.circumstances.that.they.come.from.they.are.

bigger.than.those.circumstances..This.notion.was.represented.

in. the. form. of. an. animal. that. participants. believed. best.

represents. them.. Furthermore. when. individuals. understand.

that their past does not need to determine their future.

one. is. able. to. set. achievable. goals. for. themselves.. A. goal.

setting.activity.was.done.that.assisted.participants.to.analyse.

their. life’s. and. relook. at. the. positive. things. they. want. to.

achieve.

Young.in.Prison.participants.are.aware.that.often.through.their.

actions.they.have.wronged.their.loved.ones.and.communities,.

thus. understand. that. they need to rebuild trust. ties.

within.and.among.those.they.have.wronged..In.this.edition.we.

added. a. more. distinct. voice. from. the. participants. by. adding.

letters.of.change.and.even.some.poetry..In.addition.for.some.

fun.and.brain.teasing.we.have.added.a.positive.word.search.

that.once.again.highlights.that.change.within.is.a.process.

A.big.thank.you.to.all.the.interns,.volunteers,.facilitators.and.

especially.Young.in.Prison.participants.who.make.each.issue.

of. Inside. Out. a. worthwhile. read.. It. is. with. this. in. mind. that.

we. applaud. the. change. and. progress. that. has. taken. place.

within. Young. in. Prison. participants.. And. remind. them. that.

this.festive.season.and.even.in.the.year.2013.their.voices.shall.

be.heard.and.remembered.as we reflect and celebrate

their steps towards success..Join.us.in.being.part.of.the.

solution.and.recognising.those.young.people.who.chose.to.be.

Another� year� is� passing� us. again. and. it is time to take stock of our successes.and.

challenges.in.preparation.for.the.next.year..Young.

in.Prison.has.had.more.successes.than.failures. in.

2012. thanks. to. the. ‘youth. empowerment. through.

arts.and.culture.action’. from.the.European.Union..

This.fund.has.allowed.the.organisation.to.spread its reach. across. the.Western.Cape.region.and.

in. Gauteng.. We. are. now. offering. creative. life-

skills. workshops. to. six. institutions. as. opposed.

to. two. institutions. in. 2011;. we have reached 600 participants and 500 workshops conducted.. .What. we. are. most. proud. of. is. that.

the. Inside. Out. issue. continue. to. be. delivered. to.

other. youth. at. risk. in. schools,. we. are. proud. that.

its. contents. continue to change lives of others.for.the.better..

My.message.for.this.issue.is.for.us.to.look.beyond.

the. challenges. we. face. and focus on the success no matter how small.. My. favourite.

topic. in. this. issue.was.on.trust.and.relationships..

The. workshops. assessed. the. basic. contents. of.

relationships. such. as. love. and. trust.. Trust. is. not.

only. about. our. trust. in. girlfriends. and. boyfriends.

but.who.we.can.have.hope.in.when.things.are.not.

going.our.way,.who.will.lift.us.up.when.we.are.down..

I.believe.that.the.solution does not lie within individuals but in masses of people like

our communities..It.is.also.not.about.us.trusting.the.

community.but.the.community.trusting.us..How.can.we.

achieve.this?.I.believe.that.we.can.achieve.this.by.taking.

seriously. the. notion. that. each. individual. contributes.

positively.or.negatively.to.his/her.own.community.by.the.

way.they.conduct.their.own.lives..It.is.at.this.time.of.the.

year.when.we.are.preparing.the.new.year’s.resolutions.

that.we.can.truly.evaluate. if.we are worthy of our community’s trust. and. if. not,. what. are. we. going.

to.to.earn..I.encourage.all.the.youth.of.South.Africa.to.

take a stand and make a positive mark.

in. the. development. of. the. country.. Do. not. encourage.

drug.dealers.and.gangsters.to.have.power.over.you.and.

your.community..Encourage.yourself.and.friends.in.your.

community.or.start.with.your.own.street.where.you.live.

in,.and.clean.it.us.from.the.clutches.of.drugs..

I. hope. that. this. issue. will. inspire. us. all.. I. would. like.

to. also. thank. everyone. who. has. worked. tirelessly.

throughout.the.year.to.contribute.to.safer.South.Africa.

and.being part of the solution.to.youth.

a. single. parent.. My. father. divorced. my. mother.

before.I.was.born..We.are.four.children,.two.sisters.

and. one. brother,. living. with. my. mother.. I. love.

my.family.coz.they. love.me.to.. In.2000. I.started.

school.here.in.Cape.Town.until.grade.10..I.dropped.

at.school.this.year.coz.I.started.to.smoking.drugs.

and.drinking.alcohol..On.2007.it.was.a.year.that.

I.dint.wanted.to.listen.to.my.single.parent..Now.I.

end.up.in.jail.and.my.friends.are.not.here..Now.I.

am.alone..Now.I.got.the.punishment..I.will.never.

follow.my.friends.anymore..It.is.the.truth.life.goes.

on.. In. primary. school. it’s. was. nice. and. good.. In.

grade.7.I.started.to.date.men.because.I.saw.all.of.

my.friends.are.dating.man..So. I. told.myself. that.

is.a.good.life.to.have.boyfriend.at.the.age.of.20.

to. my. friends. and. I. dropped. out. of. school. coz.

of. influence..But.now.I.miss.my.mother’s.words:.
