CLOSER LOOK AT SALTBUSH• SALTBUSH honors Australia’s Aboriginal people—the indigenous

people of the continent who have lived there for over 50,000 years. Prior to British colonialism, Australia consisted of over 250 different Aboriginal countries, each with a different language.

• SALTBUSH follows the journey of two friends as they travel across Australia on foot. As they traverse landscapes, their understanding and knowledge of the various Aboriginal countries grows.

• SALTBUSH is a special show for the New Victory in that the audience will not be in the house seats, but rather on stage with the performers! SALTBUSH is performed on what the company refers to as a “magic carpet.” The carpet consists of media projections on which the Australian landscape is projected. During the show, the audience sits on two sides of the stage with the carpet in the middle, and the students are invited to take turns joining the dancers in the playing space.

• Did You Know... the Aboriginal peoples' heritage includes 50,000 years of invaluable survival techniques for the outback? For example, the soft outside layer of the paperbark tree can become an impromptu forest bed.

Embark on a magical trek across the Australian Outback and discover the language, lore and music of its indigenous culture in SALTBUSH. Kids are invited to kick off their shoes and join the dancers to play on the interactive performance space. Amongst a kaleidoscope of Aboriginal imagery and the sound of didgeridoos, they'll ride on the backs of sea turtles and leap among the stars. From the creators of THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN (New Vic 2010 from Prato, Italy), SALTBUSH will have your senses soaring and your imagination running wild.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS SALTBUSH FROM?

• Melbourne was originally named Batmania, not after the superhero, but after John Batman, one of the founders of the city.

• Prato, Italy, is a city that sits in the heart of Tuscany. It is the third largest city in Italy after Rome and Florence.

• The title of the show, SALTBUSH, comes from the name of an endemic plant found in Australia. To Aboriginal people, it represents a commonality among the different nations of indigenous Australians.

MULTIMEDIA ART is achieved by combining an array of artistic insights and mediums such as film, literature, performance, music and sound, drama, visual arts, and/or design. In SALTBUSH, the lighting and set design for the show are generated entirely through video projection of bright, bold computer animated Aboriginal art.

INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE is a style of show that breaks the "fourth wall" which traditionally separates the performer from the audience. Interactive performance may happen amidst audience members, and often actively involves the audience. In SALTBUSH, the dancers will invite small groups of students to the stage at different times throughout the performance to explore the world created by the video projections.

Prior to exploring SALTBUSH with your students, find out how much they already know about multimedia art and interactive performance. In addition, allow them to explore the themes of cultural heritage and journey.

Use the Prior Knowledge questions below, to get a sense of your students’ understanding of the art forms and themes in the show. You may be surprised by how much they already know, and in the process of exploring these areas, you’ll spark their curiosity to see the show and enhance their anticipation for the trip.

Have you ever used a computer or another electronic device to make art? What is different about making art digitally versus art that you make with your hands?

Have you ever been to a show where the audience was part of the show? How did the performers include the audience?

Did anyone in your family move to America from a different country? What do you know about the country they came from?

SALTBUSH is from Australia. What do you know about Australia? Where is it on the map? Can you think of some animals that live there?

SALTBUSH is a journey through the landscapes of Australia. are some American landscapes that you know?
