air-CoNtroL retrofit in saipan proves Worth in tropical ClimatesAs Schramm products reach

out to all corners of the world wide ranging operating environments bring unique challenges to our customers and their Schramm rigs in exotic places like Saipan a small island in the Philippine Sea of the Pacific Ocean

One such recent challenge to Schramm was to provide air-COnTrOL as a stand-alone upgrade to an older T685WS This customer was not the usual drilling company or independent drilling contractor In this case Water Task Force

for the Commonwealth of the northern Mariana Islands needed a solution to extreme tropical conditions and its long term impact on the pneumatic onboard operating systems used on its Schramm rig The Task Force has a critical mission to provide fresh water for over 60000 inhabitants and their businesses on the island so rig reliability and performance is important to the entire local population

To fulfill their mission Water Task Force depends on a 2004 vintage Schramm T685WS

pressure to achieve the proper make-up torque and to not over tighten the joint This is the purpose of the torque limiting option on your Schramm drill rig Using the official Schramm Drill Pipe Torque Calculator shown in Figure 4-3 we can determine that the correct pressure setting for the torque limiter should be 2365 psig If your maximum torque capability is 17460 ft-lbs (209528 in-lbs) the pressure setting would be 1180 psig

The engineerrsquos Handbook states the torque for a 516-

18 nC grade 8 cap screw is 29 ft lbs and a 58-11 nC grade 8 cap screw is 230 ft lbs

Why is torque important The proper tension on threads (torque) insures the strength of the connection and will make two independent items work as one Proper tension also protects the connection against fatigue caused by stress cycles (vibrations) that will create joint failure

now you ask

What does all this have to do with my rig

Do you know what the torque value for your drill pipe thread is Is it 3-1 ApI thread or a 2-78 IF thread

How do I achieve the proper torque for my drill pipe thread joints

In order for the drill string to work as one like any thread connection the proper torque should be applied to the threads at each tool joint If the tool joints are not in proper tension then you are at risk of breaking a thread joint andor losing a drill string

The hydraulic rotary top drive drill rig is a very powerful efficient piece of equipment with a varying amount of rotary torque dependent upon the hydraulic components that are ordered in the rotation circuit The torque of a hydraulic motor measured in inch pounds (in-lb) is equal to pressure (psI) X the motor displacement (insup3rev) divided by 2 X Pi (6282) The hydraulic motors are installed in a rotation gearbox that reduces the speed but increases the mechanical advantage In the case of most schramm gearboxes that ratio is 351 All hydraulic components are given an operating efficiency dependent on the design Under most operating conditions these motors are around 92 efficient Divide the result by 12 to determine ft-lb of torque

3500 psi X 292 insup3rev6282

= 16268 X the gear ratio (351)

= 56938 X component efficiency (92)

= 52382 in-lb 12 inft

= 4365 ft-lb

In the example above (Figure 4-1) a rotation gearbox with a single 292 cu in motor will deliver 4365 ft-lb of torque at 3500 psig If the gearbox is of the two motor design and the volume of the motor remains the same the torque value would double or equate to 8730 ft-lb If the gearbox is of the four motor

design then the torque would increase to a maximum of 17460 ft-lb

The next question should be ldquoHow tight do I make my thread jointrdquo And where do I find this information

Drill pipe thread joint torque values can be found in the tool tech section of the Baker Oil Tools handbook Figure 4-2 shows a sample of the more commonly used thread joint torque values

recommended Make-Up torques

4 FH 11800 ft-lbs

4 12 Reg 15000 ft-lbs

4 12 FH 17700 ft-lbs

6 58 Reg 43000 ft-lbs

If you are drilling with drill pipe that is equipped with 2-78 IF thread joints you would need 5900 ft-lbs of torque to properly tighten this joint

So What do you do if your drill rig makes up to 8730 ft-lbs (104764 in-lbs) of torque

You would have to limit the hydraulic

and drill the bore hole will insure proper tension of all the pipe joints in your drill string By design the torque limiter circuit is only engaged in the clockwise rotation direction Following this drilling practice will leave you sufficient torque for breaking joints loose when removing your drill string from the bore hole

After achieving bore hole completion increasing the make-up torque at the gearbox tool joint will result in the joint breaking at the table reliably Typically the tool joint is set 200 to 300 psi above the drill pipe torque for the drilling process to accomplish this Optional dual torque limiters can make this job easier One set for the makeup torque at the first joint and the other set for drill pipe torque for drilling Proper torque of drill pipe joints makes drilling safer increases drill pipe life and helps to achieve a straight bore hole g

drilling rig This rig operates and is exposed to 85-95 degree Fahrenheit weather with 90-100 relative humidity 365 days a year Under these conditions the standard pneumatic air control system on the rig needed constant attention

During Schramm Service Technician Dave Finkbohnerrsquos semi-annual Schramm Service visit several years ago in conjunction with an authorized Schramm dealer Dan novarra of Western Well supply Dave had the opportunity to address this issue and recommend installation of the Schramm air-COnTrOL system on the T685Ws rig After meeting with Water Task Force management the system was sold as a stand-alone upgrade This would be the first field retrofit of air-COnTrOL

With the assistance of a local ship repair shop Seafix the Schramm Service Team had a facility in which to work that offered protection from endless rain squalls that were faced throughout the installation process With the rig available and a shop to work in it was time to put it all together By the end of the third day all of the components were installed including the view screen in the control panel After a full system test and a short course in air-COnTrOL operation schramm provided Seafix personnel with the necessary service documentation and training to permit local field support looking forward

In the past few years since the original air-COnTrOL installation on Water Task Forcersquos rig there has been only one service issue caused by a damaged sensor that was easily replaced Thanks to the global reach and experience of Schrammrsquos field service team the Water Task Force continues to drill throughout Saipan with outstanding results g

pressure to achieve the proper make-up torque and to not over tighten the joint This is the purpose of the torque limiting option on your Schramm drill rig Using the official Schramm Drill Pipe Torque Calculator shown in Figure 4-3 we can determine that the correct pressure setting for the torque limiter should be 2365 psig If your maximum torque capability is 17460 ft-lbs (209528 in-lbs) the pressure setting would be 1180 psig

Try out the Schramm Drill Pipe Torque Calculator today by contacting our Service Team at serviceschramminccom

Now what if you know your drill pipe recommended make-up torque but you donrsquot know your drill rigrsquos maximum torque capability

You must refer to your rig specific hydraulic diagram for these details

2 38 IF 3400 ft-lbs

2 38 Reg 3700 ft-lbs

2 78 IF 5900 ft-lbs

2 78 Reg 6500 ft-lbs

3 12 Reg 7500 ft-lbs

After achieving bore hole completion increasing the make-up torque at the gearbox tool joint will result in the joint breaking at the table reliably Typically the tool joint is set 200 to 300 psi above the drill pipe torque for the drilling process to accomplish this Optional dual torque limiters can make this job easier One set for the makeup torque at the first joint and the other set for drill pipe torque for drilling Proper torque of drill pipe joints makes drilling safer increases drill pipe life and helps to achieve a straight bore hole g

air-COnTrOL retrofit (continued)

drilling rig This rig operates and is exposed to 85-95 degree Fahrenheit weather with 90-100 relative humidity 365 days a year Under these conditions the standard pneumatic air control system on the rig needed constant attention
