THE SPINE

The spine of the play are the struggles the

characters have with one another over love.

HOW IT ALL CONNECTS

The actors will scatter the proscenium stage in

pairs, always at odds, to present the conflict between

the couples.

Ambient lighting will be sparse with a dim glow in

the middle of the stage, helping to push the idea of

isolation despite being together.

Think of the actor placement and actions as a

basketball defense.

Page 7: Inside the Director's Mind: Wintertime

NATURALISMExtreme realism helps the audience sympathize with the

characters and the internal conflicts with love they

possess.

The violent scenes will actually be enacted, enhancing

the anguish the audience feels.

THE WINTERThe cold of the season will be the prevailing motif

throughout the play.

The winter itself represents the rift between the

characters, the snow on the set, the characters

reactions to the cold, shivering, rubbing their hands,

etc. will be prominent throughout.

TO SIGNIFY THE ENDIn the final scene, to calm the nerves of the

audience, and present some closure, the winter motif

will be abandoned.

Warm lighting and a fireplace will ignite the

passion between Jonathan and Ariel.
