Golf Tournament 6 Dear Parents and Friends: The month of April is upon us, and with it will come many exciting events at James Monroe High School. Mid-Term Exams will be March 25—28. The third nine weeks grading period will end on April 1. The final Principal’s Coffee for this school year will be held on April 9 from 8:00 A.M. until 2:30 P.M. Please feel free to drop by for refreshments and an opportunity to visit. Report cards will be sent home with students on April 11, and the final Parent/Teacher con- ference night will be April 17 from 3:00—5:00 P.M. Appointments are neces- sary, so please contact the main office to schedule a time to meet with your child’s teachers. Spring break will begin on April 19, and classes will resume on April 28. Our spring athletic teams have begun a full and rigorous schedule. Softball, boys’ and girls’ tennis, and the track and field teams will practice and compete here at James Monroe. The lacrosse, boys’ soccer, and girls’ soccer teams will play their games at Maury Stadium, and the baseball team will play at Arm- strong Field which is located beside Walker-Grant Middle School. Please join us in support of our spring sports teams. Students in grades nine through eleven have met individually with their guid- ance counselors regarding their course requests for the 2014-2015 school year. These course selections are extremely important, and each student has a copy of what was chosen. I encourage you to review carefully your student’s selec- tions, and I suggest you contact his/her guidance counselor if you have any questions or concerns. The process of creating the master schedule is under- way. As our underclassmen are making plans for the next school year, many of our seniors are receiving letters of acceptance from colleges. Their excitement over what the future holds is understandable, however, it is imperative that they continue to put forth consistent effort as they approach the culmination of their high school years. On February 28-March 2, the Marketing DECA students represented James Monroe High School in a manner that would make everyone in the community proud. The following chapter and indi-vidual awards were won at the Virginia DECA Conference held in Virginia Beach: Chapter Awards—Blue Chip trophy which is the highest award given for chapter activities and

Cameron Brandon and Asante Quintana will competed at the International DECA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in May. In March the James Monroe chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America competed in the Germanna Regional Leadership Conference Online tests. Congratulations to the following students for placing in the top three in their respective events: 1st place - Savannah Brown - Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure 2nd place - Carley McLeod - Introduction to Business 3rd place - Tre’Tel Ingram - Business Communications

These students qualified to compete at the State FBLA Conference held in Reston in April.

The JM FLBA Chapter received the Germanna Achievement Award for Excellence. Congratulations to Advanced Placement art student, Emma Lewis, who earned an Honorable Mention for her collage in the Central Rappahannock Library’s 19

th Annual Teen Art show for stu-

dents in grades 11-12. The exhibit will be on display in the auditorium during the month of March.

This is a reminder to all Juniors and Seniors: You may not attend Prom if your name is on the debt list. Please check with Ms. Franke in the main office to make sure you are debt free. The Debt List includes, but is not limited to, unpaid parking tickets, overdue library and English books, and athletic uniforms.

The next meeting of the Special Education Advisory Committee will be April 9 at 6:30 P.M. at Lafayette Up-per Elementary School. The DisAbilities Resource Center and Kathy Ryan will review ID waivers. Addition-ally, the 2014-15 Annual Special Education Plan will be reviewed. Anyone with an interest in Special Educa-tion is invited to attend. The local Special Education plan will be reviewed. Please contact Donna Watts (372-1127) if you have a special need for accommodations.

MID-TERM EXAMS and NINE WEEKS BENCHMARK TESTS

Mid-Term exams are given in courses taught on the 4X4 schedule and will be administered on March 25 –26. The ex-ams are designed to cover the content objectives and skills of the entire semes-ter and count 20% of the semester grade.

Nine Weeks Benchmark Tests are given in courses taught on the A-B schedule and will be administered on March 25—28. The tests are designed to cover the content objectives and skills of the entire nine week grading period. Students who are absent from an exami-nation period will not be allowed to make up the exam/test unless they present a doctor’s excuse, court order, or have pri-or approval from Dr. Gordon. Monday, March 31, will be a make-up day, and we will operate on an ad-justed JAYEM AM bell schedule.

Be someone’s hero at the annual Red Cross blood drive! The National Honor Society is proud to sponsor a blood drive on April 9. NHS members are soliciting donors to meet this critical ongoing need, and the unit of blood you donate can save up to three lives here in our region. The Mr. Jayem Male Beauty Pageant has been rescheduled for April 12. Tickets can be pur-chased in advance for $3.00 or purchased at the door for $5.00. The event will take place from 7:00-9:00 P.M. in the auditorium. Come out and cheer on our fantastically talented and silly male contest-ants, who are competing for $100 in gift cards, the scepter, the crown, the trophy, and the bragging rights.

“...Jory earned 7th place in the 100 Breast Stroke and 9th in the 50 Freestyle at the Regional meet. He swam top times in each event.” Coach Kristi Allison

“...In the Regional meet Maria Behnke swam a grinder of events and managed to finish 6th in both the 500 Freestyle and 100 Back Stroke to qualify for the state meet in each event.” Coach Kristi Allison

“...Nick was the second leading scorer for the Boys’ Basketball team this season. He averaged 12.3 points per game and 9.1 rebounds. He received the coach’s award at the winter sports ceremony. Nick was also selected to the 2nd Team of Conference 27. What is remarkable about his accomplishments is that this was Nick’s first season of organized basketball since the 7th grade.” Coach Julian Bumbrey

“...Danielle led the Girls’ Basketball team this season in assists and steals. Despite an early season knee injury, she managed to earn 2nd Team Conference 27 honors. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a JUMP council member, in The League of Extraordinary Young Women, and a Monroe Singer.” Coach Don Joy
