Blue Cap’s Employment Program provides people with employment skills to be matched with successful working environments to become conscientious and motivated employees. Our dedicated and experienced staff design individualized strategies to promote job readiness and help people meet personal employment goals based on their interests.

Anna, one of our newest additions to Blue Cap's Life Enrichment Program has taken full advantage of the Employment Program. She shared with us that her passion is to work with "little ones" so Employment Services set out to make sure she could do just that! Anna now volunteers her time at the local Infant and Toddler Care reading to children to gain skills which can greater serve in employment opportunities and build her resumé for employment. When asked about her experience thus far, Anna replied, "My reading to the children gives them the opportunity to interact with someone who needs supports that are different than theirs.” She added, “A lady told me the story of the first time she saw a person with a disability, she was frightened and confused. The children I read to have the advantage of seeing and knowing diversity firsthand through me going to the day care centers.”

Anna is quite the dynamic storyteller, she reads and relates with enthusiasm, expression, and interacts by asking questions about the story; what colors the pictures are and who's the main character to engage her audience. We are excited to see what comes of Anna's experience within Blue Cap and the community.

From our Executive Director It is hard to believe that 2020 is here, the start of a new decade. For Blue Cap, this will be another decade of excellence. We are always working toward excellence, and with your help we will continue to achieve it! In the past year, you the donors have given us a good start. We have been able to upgrade and remodel some of the houses, new programs have been started to meet the needs of younger adults and folks who are slowing down, we have also introduced health initiatives to increase the well-being of everyone of all ages.

Blue Cap is in the process of building a new home to meet the needs of folks as they age and make room for younger folks who are ready to move away from family. Ways have been found to help people find meaningful jobs in the community and provide a variety of supports in day services. We have had some excellent training on finding out what people want and looking for ways to fulfill those needs. We have been creative in how to use and pay for support staff to increase the quality of all program supports.

In this next decade, Blue Cap will go through more training to lead us toward being a nationally accredited organization. Plans include looking toward expanding intermittent living supports, employment services, and increasing meaningful day, including micro-enterprises. Blue Cap will be moving toward the future with your help. Your donations will go to the programs and quality supports. Please continue to be a part of Blue Cap and this exciting new decade.

Happy New Decade!

With Appreciation and Gratitude, Pat Thies Executive Director

On October 2 & 3, volunteers lined intersections and storefronts in support of Blue Cap Foundation’s Annual Tag Days fundraiser. With a generous donation from Albanese World’s Best Gummies, people gave their time to collect change to make a change. In total over $5,700 was raised by over 60 volunteers at 15 Chicagoland locations. A big thank you to Albanese for supporting and sponsoring Blue Cap Foundation’s Annual Tag Days and to our volunteers for making this fundraiser happen. Mark your calendars for next year’s Annual Tag Days fundraiser, Friday, October 2 and Saturday,

October 3, 2020 for Blue Cap Foundation and collect change to make a change!

Local Car Club Gives Back to Blue Cap with Two Community Fundraisers This year the Romin’ Chariots Car Club, a Blue Island staple, supported Blue Cap with two community fundraisers and we cannot thank them enough. On Saturday, September 21, the Romin’ Chariots Car Club and many car enthusiasts lined up to fill Blue Cap’s Instructional Center parking lot with pre-1987 cars for the 8

th Annual

Romin’ the Island Car Party. The club raises funds by charging a $15 entry fee per car participating in the show, a 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction. This year over $3,600 was raised in support of Blue Cap’s Special Olympics team. Make sure to mark your calendars for the 9

th

Annual Romin’ the Island Car Party, Saturday, September 19th

between 3pm-7pm, which is free to spectators!

Just when we thought the Romin’ Chariots Car Club was already generous enough, they dedicated the Annual HOtrod HOliday HOedown to Blue Cap and raised over $2,000. On December 7 at Eagles Bowling Alley, the car club and friends collected this monetary donation and tons of toys and food for the Food Pantry at Blue Cap. The event was open to the community and included live music by the Cadillac Casanovas. We cannot thank the Romin’ Chariots enough for their ongoing support!

Last Spring, Blue Cap added a new addition to our supports and services, the Specialized Services Program. After working with a behavior therapist and dedicated staff the new program was set up to be an inclusive environment for all served. The program is very structured and designed to meet unique needs of all participants.

We are very excited to see how the Specialized Program expands and develops for years to come!

Rose Walk Blue Cap Family & Friends Association knows how to put the FUN in fundraising! Despite a rainy walk day on Sunday, September 8, 275 walkers and volunteers put on their walking shoes for the 11th Annual Rose Walk in memory of Rose Fanucce. Rose was a Blue Cap employee who was dedicated to making sure the people we serve lived healthy and active lives. The event grossed $8,437 for Blue Cap’s activity fund which makes Special Olympics, dances, field trips, holiday festivities and other extra-curricular activities possible year-round. Thank you to the walkers, volunteers, sponsors and all who donated for another successful Rose Walk. Have you attended Family & Friends events and really enjoyed it? We are always looking for help in planning these events. Please contact the Development Office at Blue Cap if you would be interested in being a part of Family & Friends and helping to plan future fundraising events. Save the date for Blue Cap Family & Friends Association’s next event, the Candlelight Bowl, Saturday, March 7, 9:30 p.m. at Orland Bowl.

31st Annual Auction Fundraiser Autumn Nights On Friday, November 8, committee members, sponsors, donors and volunteers dressed up for an elegant even-ing out at Blue Cap’s 31

st Annual Auction fundraiser,

Autumn Nights. The auction committee planned months in advance to transform DoubleTree Hotel Chicago-Alsip into an Autumn dream. This year’s auction had over 250 guests in attendance, 28 volunteers, 9 live auction items, 1 Special Project, 86 silent auction items, and 89 raffle items. The evening netted over $125,000 in support of Blue Cap and raised funds for new supports and services. Each year, Blue Cap raises funds in support of a new Special Project. This year’s Special Project was to fund Blue Cap’s New Residential Home, being built in 2020. The money raised from the Special Project will go directly to funding this 8-bedroom home. (See more about the New Residential Home Construction on Back Page.) The 31

st Annual Auction fundraiser was proudly spon-

sored by Tri-State Disposal Inc., Solvay, The Keyser Family, First Midwest Bank, Metro Recycling, Independ-ence Capital Financial Partners, Demco Products, 3B

Filters, The Dempster Family, and FNBC Bank & Trust. Save the date for next year’s 32nd

Auction Fundraiser on November 6, 2020 at DoubleTree Hotel Chicago-Alsip!

Giving Tuesday Giving Tuesday, celebrated the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which was on December 3, kicked off the giving season. This year Blue Cap was fortunate enough to have two matching donors! The first match came from a friend of Blue Cap with no restrictions and went up to $5,000 for all donations designated Giving Tuesday. The second donor, The Coleman Foundation, generously matched donations over $1,250 at $1,250 up to $12,500. With the support of our two dedicated matches and donors, we raised $33,400! Thank you to all of our donors; we could not have met our goal without your ongoing support! Mark your calendars for the next Giving Tuesday, December 1, 2020.

D’Shawn, served at Blue Cap, was searching for

employment for the holiday season and was placed

as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer. He has been

bundling up, heading out ringing and singing for a

great cause while giving back to the community

throughout the month of

December. On

December 20, he was

thrilled to learn that after

his red bucket was

counted, he received a

gold coin for donation to

the Salvation Army! The

coin is worth about $1,600

and was donated by an

Making Home Sweet Home a Reality

Blue Cap’s Residential Program surrounds people with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Currently, the Residential Program consists of 8 homes within the Blue Island, Calumet Park, Midlothian, and Posen communities. In 2020, Blue Cap is adding another home to our Residential Program with a full new construction right in Blue Island. The home will be completely flat and fully accessible, no steps for people who are aging out of their current two-story home, and a place to call home sweet home. A secure and welcoming home goes beyond a roof over your head, a home serves as an anchor in a challenging world, providing protection, comfort and support. With a building donation from CORE Association, building planning by Krause Construction, donations from The Coleman Foundation and Special Project Auction Donors, the home is set to break ground Spring of 2020. Be on the lookout for more updates on our newest addition to Blue Cap’s Residential Program including a groundbreaking ceremony!
