KINDERGARTEN

Dear Families,

Spring has finally arrived! To celebrate the spring season that is upon us we have spent some time learning all the differences between trees during the winter time and trees during the spring time. For art we have painted spring trees with watercolour paint and used q-tips as a paintbrush for the leaves.

For literacy this month, we have been continuing to build our sight word bank and we have been adding more sight words to our word wall. Students have been learning about the importance of sight words and why learning sight words helps them with reading more fluently and writing more effi-ciently. Our writer’s workshop continues to progress as the students have been learning and writing about small moment stories. We love to start our writer’s workshop off with the phrase “We Are Writers!”. Students always look forward to sharing their story with the class during our writing celebration at the end of the workshop.

We had student led conferences at home where students got to show their loved ones all that they have accomplished so far throughout the school year. I know all the students were proud of all the work they completed. I am so proud of all the students here as they continue to progress with their learning.

Themes for April:

Science: Spring/Plants

Social Studies: My community and neighbourhood

ELA: Building sight word bank, Writer’s workshop, stretching out a word and writing down the sounds we hear

Math: Counting collection, Part/whole numbers/decomposing numbers

NURSERY

The sun is not the only thing shining brightly these days! Our Nursery students had a chance to shine during their student led conferences. I want to take this time to thank all of the families who took part in celebrating their child’s learning! It was great to acknowledge and share all of the hard work the students have been doing in the Nursery program.

The Nursery students have especially been working hard at their new Literacy and Math Cen-tres. They are having lots of fun playing different games and completing activities that will help progress their learning. There have also been new activities added to the classroom Exploration Centres. Students now have the option of completing puzzles, or creating structures with dif-ferent types of building blocks. All of our Centre activities are designed to challenge students in different ways. Be sure to regularly check Seesaw to see what we are working on at our various Centres!

The class has also been completing their own colour mixing Art/Science projects. I cannot wait to see how the students will use their newly acquired colour mixing knowledge, at the Art sta-tion that will be implemented in April!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break, and I look forward to lots of new learning in April!

Ms. Millard, Grade 1/2 a.m. [email protected]

I hope everyone had a restful spring break!

This month Grade 1 and 2 will continue with the projects and activities in the curriculum areas that were started

in March.

Many of the students are really beginning to accelerate with their reading skills and it is very important for

students to practice their skills at school as well as at home. RAZ kids, library books, lists, labels, instructions,

and menus are good items for reading practice. When listening to your child read, remember to give them

“wait time” before stepping in to assist them with a word. Students are just learning the various strategies that

help with reading a word and they require the time and opportunity to solve words independently in order to

become a proficient reader. With writing skills, we continue to practice using upper/lowercase letters, knowing

when to use them and using consistent sizing. We will also be working on story writing. Addition and

subtraction practice/strategies will continue to be our focus in mathematics. Students are also are practicing

their counting skills as well as counting quickly and efficiently using collections of items.

Science, Social Studies, Health, Art lessons and activities will center around the arrival of SPRING to our

community. Enjoy the warm spring weather!

Happy Spring!

Mrs. Kozak

Gym Student voice did an activity in the gym class, an obstacle course race with hula hoop jumps, throw-ing a ball, bean bag toss and basketball. With the warmer weather here, we are also getting new ac-tivities in our outdoor gym class!

Recess For recess students can play many sports including basketball, soccer and 4-square. You can also play tag and other sorts of games like that. If it’s too cold to go outside, all the classes have free-time. In a non-covid year some classes go down to the gym and run out some energy. But due to covid, people must stay in their classrooms.

Math Math is a skill we should all try our best to learn, it is something we use in our everyday life, not just at school.

Lunch program Lunch program is a service where your child can stay at school, with their own lunch and be supervised by other adults. Lunch program has helped a lot of people. I really enjoy lunch program because the teachers are nice and at lunch we get double the time of our normal recess!! Lunch program is such a nice program!

Stories the school provides The Glenelm Library has books from A to Z! Detective mysteries to a cupcake catastrophe! Books like Cupcake Diaries, Dog Man, Captain Underpants, Geronimo Stilton and more! Good books help reading skills!

Dear Parents ad Guardians,

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to read our newsletter. We have been very busy this past month!

We are creating flip books from our research on moon phases and the different planets in our solar system! Each book contains interesting different facts we found while.

In English Arts we are working on our weekly reading log! With a book of our choice, we read for about 20 minutes, then we write a five to six sentence summary about what we read. Then we pick two words that we research the definitions and create a sentence using that word in it.

We have been learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using Google slides. We learned that a large amount of garbage spills into our waters and collects in one area; referred to as the GPGP.

We have learned how to calculate the Area and Perimeter of different shapes– squares and

rectangles. Did you know that area equals length x width?

Our class has also been working very hard on Zuples in math. In this activity, we have nine squares and on two of the sides, we have a certain amount of numbers. We have to use all of the numbers and then add them all together to get them in the spot they’re intended to be in so they all add up. Written by

Physical Education

The warmer weather has arrived! Outdoor gym class can now explore more options in our activities. We need to still keep in mind that our mornings are on the cool side, dressing in layers in a great

way to handle our ever changing temperatures.
