***Sunday Nights - a great
night to check for Head

Total at the end of week
three: 2700 stickers.
We are doing very well with our Earn and Learn sticker collection. A huge
thankyou to everyone who is contributing to our collection. Neighbours and
relatives may also be happy to collect for us – they may just need to be asked!
Let’s keep those stickers coming in – either in the collection box labelled
Puckapunyal Primary School at Woolworths in Seymour or in the collection
box in the school foyer. Alternatively you can complete a sticker sheet
(available in the school foyer or in week one’s newsletter).
Thank you so much for supporting our school.
Many of our Years 5/6 students have expressed interest in attending the 3 Day
Bike Ride this year. The event will also involve Seymour College and Avenel
Primary School. The 3 Day event will take place from Wednesday 28th October –
Friday 30th October, 2015. The Bike Ride involves 80-100 or so students who ride
160kms or so over 3 days. Therefore, it is an event that requires strong commitment
by the students who are involved.
Training for the ride will need to begin next week. Each week, students will need to
participate in 2 training sessions at school and then follow up with another private
session as well. That is, 3 training sessions per week, for at least 10 weeks. We
encourage all participants to begin 12 weeks ahead so that the Bike Ride is a
positive, rewarding experience.
Currently we are organising staff to take training sessions during the week. These
sessions will be held at lunchtime and after school.
For children to participate they need to have a ‘Bike Excellence Award Certificate’
achieved through passing the school’s Bike Education Course recently. Students will
need to bring their bikes and helmets on the allocated training days. They are also
expected to keep a record of their training and collect parent or teacher signatures to
verify their workload. Good luck kids!

***Have you heard your child read today? We
encourage all students to practise their reading at
home about 5 nights per week. Therefore, by now,
most students should have read at least between 115-
120 nights. Well done if you have kept up! ***
Happy Birthday to Jett Miller, Tallen
Miller and Jake Haywood who are all having
their birthdays this week.
On behalf of the Puckapunyal Primary School
Community, we wish them all a very Happy
Birthday!
Used Uniform: We still require tracksuit pants,
jocks, knickers and socks in sizes 6 and 8 to
replace wet clothing when students get wet.
Thank you for the donations already received.
Healthy Lunch tips: Here are some ideas for
lunch that don’t include the word ‘sandwich’.
Some variety can help keep children (and
adults!) interested in and enjoying healthy food.
-Boiled eggs
-Salmon rissoles, lean beef rissoles, kebabs,
chicken strips
-Zucchini/vegetable slice
-Home-made pizza
-Left-over vegetables and meat from dinner.
Some children love to eat these cold!
-Rice/pasta mixes
Fathers’ Day: We will be having a stall for our
students to buy gifts for their dads, grandads,
uncles or neighbours. If you have any suitable
items for the stall we would be very grateful.
Please note no nut products, lighters etc. Thank
you. Enjoy your week.

With many families leaving at the end of the year, it is
imperative that we know the movements of our families. To
employ teachers and organise classrooms we need accurate
information to determine how many students will be at
Pucka in 2016. If you are aware of your plans for next year
and know whether your child/ren will or will not be
attending PPS for the year 2016, please fill in this form and
return to the school a.s.a.p.

‘Striving for Excellence’

At assembly this week Reliability was announced as our School Value of the week. That means teachers are looking
for students who are demonstrating ‘Reliability’ to be eligible for the Student of the Week award. We encourage
parents to talk to their students about our values throughout the year.
What is Reliability? Year 5 student, Lochie Worden read out the meaning of Reliability. Our Assembly MC, Liam
Irwin also asked students at assembly about Reliability. The students with great answers received a prize. Well done kids!
‘Reliability means that others can depend on you and count on you to do your best to keep commitments. If your family
relies on you to feed the family pets then they are always fed without anyone having to remind you to do it.
Reliability means that you really care about doing what you said you would do.’
.
Each week at assembly, SRC representatives remind
our students of a few important school rules. This week, SRC representatives, Jamie Clark and
Bryce Williams reminded our students of the
following rules:
Puddles are for ducks, not children.
Do not enter a classroom unless a teacher is there.
Good manners cost nothing – they are free, use
them all the time!
Water tanks and garden areas are not for playing in.
Please discuss these rules with your children to help
ensure that they understand.
Did you hear Nannah
Taylor read part of her
narrative writing at assembly
this week? We did! She did a
great job! Come along and
see who reads next week.
On Thursday 20th August at 10am in the PC Centre we
will give parents an opportunity to help us look at some
School Uniform options. We are not aiming to change the
colours of our school uniform, but look at some modern
options for shirt designs. Please come along and give us
your views. All parents are welcome.
INTERNET INFORMATION: A computer that is connected to the Internet allows you to turn your
home, community centre, local library, or school into a place of unlimited information and communication. The
Internet can help your family:
-Find educational resources, including up-to-the minute news, copies of important documents and photos, and
collections of research information on topics ranging from weather conditions to population statistics.
-Get help with homework through online encyclopaedias and other reference materials and access to experts.
-Increase reading skills by providing access to interesting materials and suggestions for additional reading.
-Improve technology and information skills necessary to find and use information, solve problems,
communicate with others, and meet a growing demand for these skills in the workplace.
-Connect with places around the world to exchange mail with electronic pen pals and learn about other cultures
and traditions.
-Locate parenting information and swap ideas with other families.
-Learn and have fun together by sharing interesting and enjoyable experiences.
Year 4 student, Paige Paul sang
at assembly on Monday. She
sang a Justice Crew song – ‘Que
Sera’. She did a terrific job! We
are very proud!
Just a reminder – Parent Opinion Surveys need to be
completed and returned to school by Friday, 7th
August 2015. Please be assured that all responses
are totally confidential.

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth and
satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing schools,
beginning school for the first time and even returning for another
school year can be daunting for students and parents. It is great
to see parents eager to support their children at this time and be
an integral part of their education. If you have any concerns, or
just feel like a chat about school and your child, please find me!
SWAPP Select Program
I have information about the ADF partners career assistance
program if anyone is interested.
NEW UNIFORM
We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive that
includes shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some parents
have been waiting on this to arrive.
Best wishes for the week.

Canteen
The school canteen has been open for the past two terms serving lunches to our school. We
would like to thank the volunteers who work in the canteen, and make our lunches. The usual
food that they make for us at the canteen consists of: hotdogs, sausage rolls or party pies,
chicken nuggets & wedges and pizza. We can also order a variety of drinks. Canteen helpers, we
want you to know that you are all awesome and we would like to say thank you for this delicious
food. You make us all very happy.
5/6 Buddies
For the past couple of terms we have had buddies with the Prep O’Meara’s class, and the other
5/6 class has Mr. Itter’s grade as buddies. But, sadly we only have buddies once a fortnight.
We’re always happy to see our buddies . We hear our buddies read and sometimes we do
activities together on the IPads. They are great readers. Here are some pictures we took during
buddies.

‘Striving for Excellence’
Open since 1887
Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when
discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home,
etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are
very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means, we can plan to
cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.

Over the next few weeks, once per week, Sue Crebbin from Nexus Primary Health, will be visiting
1/2 C in Room 8. Her aim is to help our students with their social skills through ‘Sunshine Circles’
which is a part of ‘Theraplay.’
She is currently working with some of our families, introducing Theraplay in the home. We can see
the benefit of some of her work with our students in the classroom.
Sunshine Circles in our classroom will:
Improve group functioning and individual learning
Build positive relationships and classroom communities
Teach healthy values, cooperation and social skills
Bring fun and joy into the classroom
Engage hard to reach kids
Improve self-regulation
Enhance both self-esteem and empathy for others
This program is designed for teachers, social workers, early childhood specialists and other
professionals who are in the position to support classroom teachers.
