Our October show was another good

day although numbers were down slight-

ly. The City Cowboys played a lot of mu-

sic we could dance to. Due to Juliet Oli-

ver falling sick and was unable to per-

form for us we invited Kevin Merri

along for the day. He has come a long

away with his music. Keep up the good

work Kevin. We enjoyed your perfor-

mance. We also had a walk up from

Tasmania come along . Greg Kirkland

did about five songs. He was very good

doing some of the old country music.

We seem to have another problem

with our donated raffle prizes, some-

one is pu*ng second hand and used

items in for raffle prizes. This puts a

dampening on our club and those peo-

ple who are doing the right thing in

dona+ng on the day. We do appreciate

your support but we need it done right.

Well onto our November show, we will

be entertained by Hurn Four.

So un+l then…

The much an3cipated Slim Dusty Centre will opened its doors on October 17 ahead of the

official gala opening on November 19. The Slim Dusty Centre, in Slim’s hometown of

Kempsey, is a mul3 purpose facility that includes a Museum, a Travelling Exhibi&on Gallery,

a Visitors Centre, a retail shop called The General Store, a Func&on Centre and the Dusty’s

Dinner Camp Café. The Museum exhibi3on within the Slim Dusty Centre features objects

and images from the Kirkpatrick family’s own extensive archive, as well as contribu3ons

from fans and friends all over the world. The display provides a look into Slim’s first steps into show business, the early

years of adventures with Joy and their mates touring the towns and villages of Australia’s outback, and the glory days

of life on the showgrounds of Australia with ar3stes and performers of vaudevillian delights.

The Centre will also include a Travelling Exhibi&on Gallery that will feature exhibi3ons from capital ci3es around Aus-

tralia. The Slim Dusty Centre will also include a Visitors Centre for visitors to the Macleay Valley, while the General

Store will sell Slim merchandise and local arts and craLs. The Dusty’s Dinner Camp Café will exclusively serve a spe-

cially created ‘Homewood Blend’ coffee as one of the items on its Aussie bush tucker themed menu.

Joy McKean said, “Slim and I always looked forward to the opening of this Centre that would showcase not just our

music and our life together on the roads of Australia, but would tell the story of Australian Country Music as a part of

everyday life in this na+on. As a family, we’ve worked hard and long to fulfil Slim’s dream. Anne and David especially

have been and s+ll are irreplaceable in their dedica+on to their father’s legacy. We hope that all those who have spent

years suppor+ng our efforts will feel it has all been worth it. We believe that Slim’s legacy to his hometown is a beau+-

ful Centre and Museum that will con+nue to benefit Kempsey and the Macleay Valley in the coming years as the exhibi-

+on grows to eventually accommodate the full collec+on of memorabilia.”

Recent visitor to the Slim Dusty Centre, fellow ar3st Paul Kelly said, “It's a beau+ful place. Welcoming and generous,

full of music and stories, just like Slim.”

Slim Dusty Centre Patron Dick Smith said, “I’ve been flying in my helicopter over the Slim Dusty Centre during the

last few years as it is being built and it’s certainly exci+ng to see it’s now finished. In future, people are going to say

‘you’re not a real Australian un+l you’ve visited the Slim Dusty Centre at Kempsey’.”

To coincide with the opening of the Slim Dusty Centre, EMI Music will release a new Slim Dusty album, ‘The Den

Tapes’. Released on November 13, the new album features 10 recently unearthed recordings and represent the last

known unreleased songs by Slim.

Twelve years aLer the passing of David Gordon Kirkpatrick, Slim’s family along with many people in the Country Music

industry, the Macleay Valley Coast community and supporters from across the na3on, have worked for countless hours

across many years to create a las3ng legacy to Slim, honouring his contribu3on to Australian Country Music, and to

Australia’s history. The result is the Slim Dusty Centre. The Museum is open daily from 10am-4pm, 7 days a week

GCMC Does the Playford Alive Fun Day Again

Last year the Gawler Country Music Club was invited to be part of the

Playford Alive Community Fun Day held in the new Munno Para Wet-

lands. We had a great display stand promo3ng the club and local music

with some memorabilia and giveaways. We also had Brian Moore with

Stewart and Tammie Ray entertain the crowd showing the audience what

great local talent we have.

Well, we will be back again this year to do it even bigger and be:er. What

a great event put on that is completely free to a:end, and so much to see

and do. Come along and bring your friends to have a fun day. Help us sup-

port the club and the local community.

7

The City Cowboys were the stars of our Octo-

ber show. It was good to see everyone enjoying

themselves listening to not only country stand-

ards, but lots of classic rock ’n’ roll, boogie woo-

gie, and dance hall favourites. Our guest artist

was Kevin Merritt, who did a great job. You can

really see that his hard work and dedication has

paid off. It’s good to see the young ones up on

stage and playing well. Greg Kirkland from Tasmania was passing

through, and we were lucky enough to have him

stop in and play for us as well. He certainly had

the Slim Dusty sound down pat. Keith Warren also made a formal presentation of the Life Membership awards to our good fr iends and long

standing committee members George Dobie and Fred Payne. Well done guys, you deserve it.

Dave had worked

hard to grow an im-

pressive watermelon

patch. One morning

he discovers that little

Billy Brown from

down the road had

been helping himself

to the prized watermel-

ons. Dave thinks of ways to

discourage the young

thief, so he puts up a

sign that reads:

"WARNING! ONE OF

THESE WATERMEL-

ONS CONTAINS CY-

ANIDE!" He smiled smugly as

he watched Billy run

off the next night with-

out eating any of the

melons. Dave returns to the

watermelon patch a

week later to discover

that none of the water-

melons have been eat-

en, but finds another

sign that reads: "NOW

THERE

ARE

TWO!"

Swift's most recent album, 1989 — for which her world tour is named — recently went Double Platinum in Australia just more than a month after its release. See Ticketek for tickets - http://premier.ticketek.com.au/default.aspx
