The camera I use for my photography is a Canon 70D. It is also used for some video. A Garmin VIRB action camera is my in-car choice. Adobe Creative Cloud software is used to process photos and video taken with the Canon DSLR camera. Garmin has software to edit the action camera video which adds car speed, RPM, etc. to the edited video. When I am not at the computers, I have the 1974 Harley-Davidson project (below left) to give me time to relax working on vehicles. I am the volunteer photographer for the Lynchburg Museum System and have several functions with the Blue Ridge Region, Porsche Club of America. My goal in retirement is to have fun and stay busy.

Color close-up of a purple iris with raindrops. The cloudy skies made for good photography and the rain made the subject more interesting. Using the macro lens makes the bloom seem 3-diminsional, almost floating. There are many iris colors in this garden and many have been photographed.

No better way to start the July issue than with a patriotic photo. This house in an Evington, Virginia neighborhood looked like a typical suburban home on July 4th. The flag evokes many emotions, hopefully goods ones for you, and symbolizes our great country.

These geese parents on a pond in Mechanicsville, VA. are spending quality time with their five babies. Some reflections are clear and others rippled like the water. This pond provides many different reflection opportunities due to the homes around the shore. Sunrise reflections are the most beautiful.

The muddy James River flows high and fast past downtown Lynchburg, VA. This view is Amherst County across the river. Several days of rain caused minor flooding in Lynchburg but flooding was major in surrounding areas. May was one of the wettest on Record in Lynchburg.

The conditions at this high school baseball game were far from optimal. The bright sun of early evening and late spring sun angle made shadows long and dark. Additionally, while trying to capture his face hidden in shade, I wanted the blur of action with his arms and legs. The look of concentration on his face was also an important part of this shot. I used multi-frame and shot several pitches. Though not the best, under the conditions I am pleased with the result.

Specifications:Canon 70DF 51/50ISO 100100-400 L at 170 mm

Another patriotic symbol, the Bald Eagle, is on the back of this frosted, proof-like Morgan silver dollar. Minted in Carson City, Nevada these silver dollars are well known for their cc mint mark and rarity. This example is in an airtight holder and its owner watched how it was handled. It is certainly a pretty coin.

Specifications:Canon XTiF 7.11/100ISO 80055 mm

This Tulip Magnolias endured frost and snow but still produced a lot of pretty blooms. As the blooms dropped their petals the ground resembled the snow which the tree endured. There are few years which these tree blooms are undamaged by late season cold, but they endure.

The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia offers scenic overlooks which are excellent for photography. This is the Rock Castle Gorge in Floyd County, Virginia. The clouds and sun combination made a pattern on the ground, accenting the interesting photograph.

Bumblebee in flight from one flower to another. Getting a flying bee in focus is difficult, but this one cooperated. It required several attempts. And I got the motion blurred wings too. I had never caught a bumblebee in flight so I learned how to capture this moment in future photos.

Name that Porsche. (L-R) 356 was the first Porsche model, this one from the 1960s. Next is a 911 Targa from the 1980s. Purists howled when the Cayenne was introduced as Porsche’s first SUV. Last is a 911 Cabriolet from the first generation of water-cooled 911 Porsches.

A thunderstorm brings out a full course caution. Note the yellow flags standing out in the wind and rain. The course worker holding the flag was prepared with his rain suit. The heavy rain later brought out the red flag stopping the race until conditions improved enough to resume safe racing.

Early morning after the previous day’s thunderstorm. Fog settled on the track and dew covered the grass. Headlight reflections showed the track was wet. All the moisture evaporated by race time leaving a dry track and good racing conditions. Early spectators did get wet feet from the dew.

Specifications:Canon 70DF 4.51/125ISO 20070-200 L at 73 mm

The sun is out and the track is dry. Let the racing begin! Spectators were able to see a car “mow the grass” as going off track is called. Good luck prevailed as the car did not hit the tire barrier and was able to continue, though in last place. There are always photo opportunities at a racetrack.

When traveling, take the road less traveled. Stop for a meal at a local restaurant. The food is usually better than the chain restaurants, and the people friendlier. Farmville, Virginia, for an excellent breakfast at a reasonable price. When you stop, talk to Tammie.

Another local choice is on Main Street in Salem, Va. It is a higher end restaurant that meets expectations. Owner Scott is there making sure everything is to his standards. While main street is not for the traveler in a hurry, a good meal in a relaxing environment makes an excellent rest stop.If you take the road less traveled you will have many different experiences.

Always be aware of what is happening around you. Sitting in the stands during a baseball game provided a view of aircraft leaving Richmond International Airport (VA). During lulls in the baseball game there were opportunities to photograph interesting passenger jets. A few clouds would make this American Eagle plane have a nicer background as it flew overhead.

Another of the always be aware of what is happening around you series. A neighbor called to alert me to these rainbows and a great photo opportunity. There was no time to get a better view. Somewhere over the rainbow should be the caption for this photo. Activities are not the only interesting things happening.

This is Night Ruler, a black iris. There are no real black flowers, so this is very dark purple. There are many colors and sizes in the iris world, this being a larger bearded size. Since this is called a black iris I shot it in black & white to further emphasize the darkness. The bloom seems to look 3-D to me. Don’t think B&W is outdated. Try a few B&W shots and see if you like them.

This is a scan from a film photo shot in 1988 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida. I liked the car with the arrow on the road. Though it is hard to see on the rocker panel the car advertised GE 2-way radios made in Lynchburg, Virginia. The use of radios in race cars was just starting and few teams had them. The GE dealer in Orlando, Florida supported the effort.

Decisions, decisions which one do you want today. Maybe a dozen will satisfy all the desires. Of course there are many variates of bagel too. If you have a sweet tooth or need a breakfast meal, this location on Leesville Road in Lynchburg, Virginia is the place. Lunch sub sandwiches complete the menu with sides of soup and potato salad.

Specifications:Canon 70DF 41/6ISO 32024-105 L at 47 mm

More decisions, decisions which one do you want today, the orange/vanilla swirl or the butterscotch sundae? On a hot day the cold ice cream makes for a cooling treat. At this location on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg, Virginia the popularity seems to increase each year. It is easy to see why.
