Letter from the President of Jupiter Medical Center FoundationWelcome to the first 2017 edition of Lasting Impact! While the year is still young, we already have a wealth of exciting news to share.

As of this writing, we have received a little more than $103 million in philanthropic donations toward the $300 million goal of our Vision. Innovation. Impact. Campaign for Jupiter Medical Center. This remarkable outpouring of generosity vividly reflects the value placed on our service to the community by our friends, neighbors and donors.

Made possible by a magnificent $25 million gift from Mrs. Marjorie Matheson, the single largest gift in our history, our Anderson Family Cancer Institute broke ground in a historic and touching ceremony on January 31.

Not even two weeks earlier, on January 19, we cut the ribbon on our newly renovated Frenchman’s Creek Digestive Health Center at Jupiter Medical Center, made possible by the support of the Frenchman’s Creek Men’s Health Day Golf Tournament. This new facility provides leading-edge diagnostics and treatments, and expands Jupiter Medical Center’s existing partnerships in cardiology and oncology with Mount Sinai New York.

Thanks to a visionary $1 million donation from Jim and Louise Felcyn, we will soon begin build-out of the James J. Felcyn and Louise Brien Felcyn Observation Unit. Dedicated to the needs of patients who require extended monitoring, the unit will enhance the flow of care throughout the hospital.

To everyone who joined us on April 1 at the Breakers, Palm Beach for our 41st Annual Black-Tie Ball, we thank you for supporting our comprehensive cancer program at Jupiter Medical Center. This years’ Ball attracted another sold-out crowd, and guests enjoyed a performance by Broadway star and Billy Joel protégé Michael Cavanaugh that was generously underwritten by Omnicom. We would also like to extend a special thank you to our presenting sponsor Sheridan, An Envision Healthcare Company, and our many other generous sponsors and underwriters.

In more ways than I have room to list here, 2017 is off to a great start, and we look forward to keeping the momentum going. As ever, we enthusiastically welcome and deeply appreciate your partnership and support.

All my best,

Liv Vesely

Letter from the ChairmanThis is a pivotal moment in the transfor-mation of Jupiter Medical Center from a great community hospital to a world-class, regional health care resource. The historic groundbreaking on January 31 for the Anderson Family Cancer Institute is just the latest example.

Jupiter Medical Center’s president and CEO, John Couris, and the entire administrative and clinical leadership teams, are committed to providing world-class care for the region, with a special focus on the most serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, digestive ailments, traumatic brain injury, and orthopedic and spine disorders.

From state-of-the-art facilities and next-generation technologies to its growing cadre of physician subspecialists, Jupiter Medical Center is making great strides in all these areas—with more to come.

People make gifts to organizations that inspire confidence with their unwavering commitment to quality and integrity. Jupiter Medical Center and its team have already earned this confidence many times over, and they set the bar higher every day.

Whether directly or indirectly, you and your loved ones are reaping the benefits of the medical center’s ongoing evolution today—and will rely on it even further tomorrow. We invite your support and partnership in writing this inspiring story of healing and progress in our community.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Taddeo

“We are transforming the future of health care in our community by putting patients at the center of everything we do,” said John D. Couris, Jupiter Medical Center’s president and CEO, to the gathering. “Anderson Family Cancer Institute will enable us to offer world-class, comprehensive cancer care to our neighbors right here in Palm Beach County.”

Joe Taddeo, chairman of the board of Jupiter Medical Center Foundation, hailed the process of continuous improvement that has empowered the medical center’s remarkable achievements, noting with pride that “people are now getting on planes from around the United States and the Caribbean, and coming here for treatment. We keep expanding capabilities to treat more severe and more complex conditions, and this groundbreaking is a perfect example of this progress.”

The ceremony also featured an inspiring video portrait of two cancer patients who were successfully treated at Jupiter Medical Center. Stories like these reflect the heartening outcomes made possible by a robust, integrated “ecosystem of cancer resources,” explained chief of oncology, Dr. Abraham B. Schwarzberg. Schwarzberg has guided significant expansions and enhancements in Jupiter Medical Center’s cancer services, including recruitment of top-flight cancer specialists, implementation

of a multidisciplinary model of care, and patient-friendly, new treatment technologies such as the CyberKnife® M6™ System and Electron Beam IntraOperative Radiation Therapy (e-IORT).

Even these superb assets “would not be worth anything without a compassionate environment. Here at Jupiter Medical Center, you’re a patient, not just a number,” said Dr. Schwarzberg.

According to Liv Vesely, president of the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation, thanks to the towering philanthropy honored at the groundbreaking ceremony and other gifts, $35 million has been raised toward the $50 million cost of the Anderson Family Cancer Institute, a cornerstone of the medical center’s $300 million Vision. Innovation. Impact. Campaign for Jupiter Medical Center.

As Vesely and her colleagues reach out to both loyal supporters and new friends of the medical center to raise the $15 million still needed for construction of the facility, an array of giving opportunities are available for donors wishing to consider a prominent community legacy, including the naming of the institute’s dedicated Oncology Health and Wellness Center.

“Every single gift counts,” Vesely emphasized. “We hope that everyone whose life is touched by our beautiful region will recognize the benefits provided by this new center for cancer care for you, your loved ones and your neighbors—and that you will partner with us in this vitally important initiative.”

The hardworking, human digestive system is vulnerable to a variety of debilitating, often chronic, conditions. Jupiter Medical Center and Mount Sinai Health System in New York City, partners since 2015 in a novel, collaborative initiative to deliver top-flight cardiology care to our community, have now combined their outstanding resources to enhance the care of patients with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and disorders.

On January 19, 2017, guests and donors gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the newly renovated Frenchman’s Creek Digestive Health Center, made possible by the philanthropic support of the Frenchman’s Creek Men’s Health Day Golf Tournament, Stephen and Louise Macht, Tim and Maryanne Neher, Burt and Rita Tansky, Mariann Tenaglia and Stephen Colanero. The expanded, state-of-the-art unit features nine bays for pre-procedure and recovery services, and houses new equipment for advanced upper and lower GI procedures, as well as pulmonary procedures.

“Through our affiliation with Mount Sinai Heart New York for cardiology, we’ve found new ways to enhance clinical care and innovation in our own backyard,” said John D. Couris, president and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “We are now bringing that same model of transformative collaboration to digestive health services.”

The new affiliation and facility “will make Jupiter Medical Center the unquestioned leader in our region for advanced diagnosis, treatment and management of digestive diseases,” said Chester J. Maxson, MD, medical director for the digestive health center. U.S. News & World Report ranks Mount Sinai seventh in the nation for gastroenterology and GI surgery.

Jupiter Medical Center’s gastrointestinal care encompasses multidisciplinary diagnostics and minimally invasive surgical procedures for both children and adults coping with digestive disorders, ranging from inflam-matory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease to hepatobiliary conditions and gastrointestinal cancers.

The team’s advanced therapeutic technologies and techniques include radiofrequency ablation for Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal and anorectal motility studies, Bravo pH studies and capsule endoscopy.

Planned Gifts Provide Lasting ImpactDedication to community service is at the heart of nonprofit organizations such as Jupiter Medical Center. Philanthropic support is the lifeblood that allows us to fulfill our mission.

For more than 35 years, Jupiter Medical Center, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) independent hospital, has been committed to meeting the health care needs of our growing community with the generous support of neighbors and friends through the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation.

Planned gifts to Jupiter Medical Center Foundation serve as beacons of hope and healing long after their founding. Donors who support the medical center’s work through planned giving are honored by our Lighthouse Legacy Society.

Supporters can make donations through a bequest, a will, retirement plans – IRA, 401(k) or 403(b) or other types of planned giving, which offer significant flexibility and precision in structuring an estate, while meeting a family’s current and future needs.

For more information about the Lighthouse Legacy Society or to learn more about ways to make a planned gift to Jupiter Medical Center Foundation, please contact Jennifer Amarnick at 561-263-5728 or [email protected].

Pediatric Simulation Technology

Pediatric care is an integral part of the system of care at Jupiter Medical Center. The Batchelor Foundation generously funded a new pediatric simulator, which enables the mastery of learning through deliberate practice of high-risk and/or low frequency events or procedures without compromising patient safety. This simulator is one example of how education will continue to transform health care in our community for generations to come. We thank The Batchelor Foundation for their support of Jupiter Medical Center.

Lighthouse Legacy SocietyMembers of our Lighthouse Legacy Society are honored guests at our annual Lighthouse Legacy Society luncheon. Members of the Society are invited as honored guests to attend invitation-only special events.

Highballs & Hibiscus 2016

For the sixth consecutive year, Jupiter Medical Center Foundation hosted its Highballs & Hibiscus fundraising event on September 16, 2016. The event brought new co-chairs, Erin Devlin and Pamela Tombari, as well as presenting sponsor, The Gardens Mall, and preferred vodka sponsor, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, to Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter. More than 500 guests enjoyed a cocktail reception with live entertainment, and dinner and dancing to the sounds of Rock With U. Proceeds from the annual event benefited women’s and children’s services at Jupiter Medical Center. The event more than doubled revenue earned at the previous year’s Highballs & Hibiscus.

$1 Million Gift Creates Dedicated Observation UnitFor people experiencing worrisome symptoms such as fainting, difficulty breathing or severe chest, back or stomach pain, there is one widely understood health care directive: Call 911 or head to your nearest emergency room.

What happens next, however, is not always clear-cut. Some emergency room patients need to be hospitalized immediately. Others receive several hours of monitoring and observation before either being admitted to the hospital or cleared to go home.

To meet the needs of emergency room visitors who are being evaluated and tested over periods that can range up to 24 hours, a growing number of hospitals have created dedicated observation units. By freeing emergency teams to focus on new arrivals and ensuring the availability of hospital beds for admitted patients, such units help to improve care delivery across the spectrum.

Thanks to a $1 million gift from Jim and Louise Felcyn, Jupiter Medical Center will soon begin construction on the 18-bed James J. Felcyn and Louise Brien Felcyn Observation Unit.

“The unit will be the setting for short-stay services such as heart monitoring, enzyme panels and IV infusion for patients with dehydration,” says Steven Seeley, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer at Jupiter Medical Center.

“By allowing our teams to more efficiently triage and manage everyone who comes through our doors, the observation unit will help us provide the best possible care to all of our patients.”

Because people experiencing symptoms of heart disease are among the most frequent visitors to emergency departments, the new facility holds special significance for the Felcyns, both of whom lost parents to heart disease.

“We have been very fortunate and wanted to give something back,” explains Jim Felcyn. After establishing a generous planned gift to Jupiter Medical Center Foundation, the Palm Beach Gardens couple was seeking another philanthropic opportunity that would make a more immediate impact.

“The hospital foundation team explained that the observation unit was a critical need,” adds Felcyn, a retired software executive who immediately understood the benefits the unit would deliver. “All of the tremendous advances in technology and pharmaceuticals are not useful until they are actually delivered to the people who need them.”

“What is going on at Jupiter Medical Center is incredible,” says Louise Felcyn, a native Quebecer, who fondly recalls her experiences as a summer nursing assistant in Quebec and has been fascinated by medicine ever since. Thirty-one years ago, when she moved to Florida, Louise worked as a volunteer at Broward Hospital in Fort Lauderdale; then later she worked as an employee in risk management at Holy Cross Hospital. “We are amazed by Jupiter Medical Center’s expansion, their partnership with Mount Sinai, and all the other great things they are doing.

“We are just really pleased to have the opportunity to help the medical center grow.”

Fashion and food took center stage at Saks Fifth Avenue Palm Beach Gardens for the annual Key to the Cure event, which kicked off on October 26, 2016. For the first time, guests enjoyed a stunnig fashion show with cocktails and bites from generous restaurant and beverage partners. Once again, this unique culinary and shopping event attracted a large group in support of women’s cancer services at Jupiter Medical Center. The event’s presenting sponsor was one of Jupiter Medical Center’s own physicians, Dr. Donna Pinelli, Gynecologic Oncologist and Medical Director of the Robotic Surgery Program.

Participating restaurant and beverage partners included Tito’s Handmade Vodka, 3800 Ocean Restaurant, Brio Tuscan Grille, Café Chardonnay, Craft Bar Kitchen, Dreamallows, Ironwood Steak & Seafood at PGA National Resort & Spa, Ocean Bleu, Salute Market, Sandy James Fine Food & Productions, Seasons 52 and The Capital Grille.
