I Love You from the Bottom of My … Brain? The Neuroscience of Love. Love can be intoxicating. Understanding this mysterious effect from a perspective of science may help us navigate relationships with a little more clarity. There are biological factors that can easily override even the most level-headed person. Love is a complex phenomenon, relying on trust, belief, pleasure and reward activities within the brain. These processes critically involve oxy-tocin, vasopressin, dopamine, and serotonergic signaling. Major players in this chemical drama include testosterone and estrogen, which relate to sex-drive; dopamine which has to do with plea-sure, addiction, and reward; oxytocin which is most commonly called the “love hormone” as it is associated with attachment and bonding – while (along with vasopressin) playing an important role in mate preference. OK, that will suffice for the geek speak, for now. Love is beautiful, but it can also be addictive, causing us to do and say some crazy things, such as “flipping out” in a moment of passion. (Think Carrie Underwood Before He Cheats). We have a special part of our brain to thank for this. It is called the amygdala. It has the ability to hijack our brain into a fight or flight mode. It comes from our pre-historic past when we were preyed upon in the wild and required instantaneous response to survive in life-or-death situations. So, the amygda-la was given the special power to override or bypass the more reasonable parts of ourself. When we are emotionally “triggered” it is the result of our amygdala perceiving some sort of danger. The ability to recognize this, pause and breathe, can do wonders in terms of helping us return to sanity during heated moments. So now we see just how complex and unpredictable love can be. The gift within this is the abil-ity to begin distinguishing which needs/ biological responses are being triggered. When things go wrong in our love life, we can still learn a lesson. This can be an opportunity to bring us back to the basic spiritual principles and practices of letting go, forgiveness, and compassion along with unconditional love for self and other. Sometimes even a break-up with someone you love can be a powerful and transformative part of your personal growth and empowered living. So Happy Val-entine’s! Let’s spread some love!

Looking Great! Tips and Tricks to Look Your Best! by Jill Beckstedt, Connerton Resident

Choosing Your Best Hairstyle Let’s face it. Hairstyling can be a challenge in Florida. Since the humidity normally re-turns in March, now it is a good time to assess what hairstyle will work for at least the next six months. It can be scary to change styles, but then, nothing ventured, nothing gained! The right cut can take off more than just length... it can create an optical illusion of tak-ing off years and even pounds! It can either cre-ate an up-to-date, sharp or trendy image, or it can scream out the decade of your high school graduation. (God forbid, it was the 80’s!) Some have settled for the “I barely have time to wash it and it’s still wet now” look. But should you opt for a fresh, fashion-forward chop? Do your part to get a great outcome. Sched-ule a consultation with your stylist, and take a few pictures with you! Your stylist wants to please you, but she is not a mind reader! Some cosmetic companies have a Virtual Makeover that lets you “try on” different hairstyles and col-ors and will even save your creations or let you email your favorites to friends for feedback! I save mine on my iPad to show her. I have also snapped pictures of women on TV whose styles matched my taste! It is important to take into consideration the volume, texture, curl or straightness, as well as styling time and upkeep. Listen to your stylist’s advice; if you are really attracted to a certain style but your hair is unlikely to cooperate, a compromise may be in order. You will want to take into consideration your face shape. Here are some tips for the most complimentary style:

Diamond-Shaped face: An angular cut can emphasize good cheekbones. Bangs or fullness can add width to a slightly narrow forehead.

Square face: Asymmetric or geometric cuts are quite flattering. Fullness on top can lengthen face and an off-center part or bangs are suggested. (By the way, this shape face “ages” best!)

Rectangular face: Asymmetric or geometric cuts; shorten the appearance of face with bangs and styles with nO fullness on top. An off-center part will help.

Round face: Soft style with curves; add height with fullness on top. This is my daughter’s face. She looks GREAT with long hair… not so good with shorter.

Oblong face: Emphasize the soft smooth lines. You may wish to add bangs and a style with no height to shorten the effect, adding an off-center part. This is me, but I will nOT do bangs with my super oily skin!

Pear-shaped face: Emphasize soft curves. You can add full-ness across the forehead with soft curls to bal-ance the narrow forehead with fuller cheeks. Hair brought onto cheeks will soften and di-minish cheek width.

One last tip. Ask your stylist to turn you TOWARDS the mirror while she styles your hair. Ask if you can video her with your phone. Just focus it on the mirror! Talk to her about how YOU will work with it after you leave her chair! Purchase the right styling products and tools. If you think the ones at the salon or over-priced, just snap a pic or write down the name of the product, the brand, product genre (styling gel, cream, or mousse, heat prep/pro-tector, volumizer, etc.,) and shop the discount stores, beauty supply, and online to look for a better deal. Be brave! Your BEST LOOK could be a snip away! See you at the Salon! For questions or future topic suggestions, please email [email protected].

Directions: combine all ingredients in bowl.

You’ve tried diets, but you always gain the weight back. What can you do? Focus on health, not diets. Diets are hard to maintain and usually do not work in the long run. It is very hard to stay with a diet that includes lots of big changes in your eating habits. Instead of a diet, focus on lifestyle changes that will improve your health and achieve the right balance of energy and calories. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in. You can do it by eating healthy foods in reason-able amounts and becoming more active. And you need to do it every day. Little steps mean a lot. Losing just 10 lb can make a difference in your health. Most people have more success when they make small changes, one step at a time. For example, you might eat an extra piece of fruit, walk 10 minutes more, add more vegetables to your meals or drink water instead of soda. Studies show that people who keep track of what they eat are better at losing weight. Keep a note-book where you can write down everything you eat and drink each day. You may be surprised to see how much you are eating. Use a calorie counter to add up your calories. (You can find calorie counters online and at bookstores.) You may want to write down the amount of physical activity you’ve had each day and compare the calories you burned to those you took in. You can see how many calories you burn through daily activities. (You can find calories to burn calculators online.)
