TRANSCRIPT
Dear Friends of Oakland: February / March Acorn As I look back on 2016 and try to pinpoint, what we did and what we accomplished, I am astounded and overwhelmed, yet confused. Think about it. We had a very busy year and accomplished many awesome things, many firsts, and many things that will set us up for big things in the future, and yet at the same time, it feels like with all the awesome things we did to-
gether, there is the potential to grow even more in 2017. In 2016, we held the PullingTOGETHER Campaign to completely pay off our debt in 3 years. We pledged over $600,000, and to date we’ve paid $277,953 off our mortgage in 1 year! This was a step of faith, since we did not have a “project” per sé, only the hope that God is going to use us to do something so big, that if we don’t have empty hands when he asks, we’ll have to say, “No.” Cleveland is grow-ing so rapidly, that PullingTOGETHER is an investment in the future ministry of Oakland. I believe a year from now, maybe two, God will confront us with a huge ministry opportunity only possible because of our faithfulness now.
In 2016, our Youth Programs really gained momentum. In January, I took 2 high schoolers to ARISE, a retreat by high schoolers for high schoolers, and they immediately turned around and took 2 more high schoolers to ARISE in September. One said, “I just want everyone to feel the love of God like I did.” In the summer, we sent 15 people, in-cluding 9 youth on a Mission Trip with Group Missions to Pocahontas, VA, where they made repairs to homes. The trip so invigorated everyone that the group shared their ex-periences and lessons for nearly 2 full hours one Sunday morning (and no one com-plained). The next week, Pastor Andrew took 5 middle school boys to Florida for The Great Escape (YCM Ministries), where 2 kids experienced God’s presence and love consciously for the first time, and the other 3 grew in openness to Jesus or commitment to Jesus. Coming back from the trips, the youth were primed for growth and service. They served widely at church throughout the rest of 2016, most notably preparing the Joy Gift Musical, It Happened in the Country. The musical challenged our high schoolers to sacrifice time and risk their reputations to “take up their cross” by singing in an intentionally cheesy play. Watching them work hard and perform well was incredibly humbling. Thanks in large part to Keeley, the choir, and our volunteer musi-cians, 2016 was an awesome year mu-sically. Our Choir improved more and more – singing with increasing joy, faith, and skill through the year. Each week, they sang like people who be-lieved the words they were singing were true and powerful for changing hearts and lives.

Choir News: The Choir did an incredible job sharing the story of Christ-mas through the Christmas Cantata back in December. It is a special gift to get to worship in this special capacity with the church. We are currently working on the Easter Cantata, “Hope - Alive in Me” that will be sung on Sunday, April 9th at 10:30 am. If you are interested in singing with us, come join us Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm. Everyday Music Ministry Opportunities: The Choir is always looking for additional members to sing each Sunday morning. We rehearse every Tuesday night from 7:00-8:00 pm. Childcare can be provided if you contact the church office on Monday. Also, if you play an instrument (guitar, organ, piano, flute etc.), I would love to have a conversation with you and get you involved in our music ministry. You can contact me at [email protected].

In Fellowship Supper news, the Hanging of the Greens sup-per we had in November was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the ham, rice, green beans, apple salad, rolls, and homemade desserts. It was a wonderful way to start off the Advent season. You can’t beat food and fellowship at OPC. Our January fellowship supper was January 18 . The Chicken pastry, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, & cornbread were outstanding. The next Fellowship Supper is scheduled for March 15. Please remember to use the enve-lopes in the pews to sign up and pay beforehand. It really helps the team to be able to estimate the amount of food needed. Hope to see everyone there!

Christmas was in the air as the Saints met on Dec. 1st for our annual Christ-mas party. The fellowship hall was decorated and everything looked very festive. There was lots of good fellowship between friends as we waited for meal time. Everyone en-joyed a delicious meal and then we were fortu-nate to have Michelle McLaughlin entertain us with a few Christmas songs. We all enjoyed her wonderful voice, as usual. The last item on our agenda was our gift exchange. Everyone had agood time and left with a gift, full stomachs and most of all, full hearts. One year is behind us and now we look forward to the upcoming year of Saints activities. We did not meet in January, but I am planning something special for February. We will not meet at our regular time on the first Wednes-day, but I am planning an outing for us on Saturday, Feb.25, at 2:00 pm, at the Garner Performing Arts Center. We will be going to see a variety show of singers, comedi-ans and a senior dancing act. I think this will be loads of fun and I need RSVP's by February 20th. The only cost to you is your time. We will meet at the Church at 1:00 and leave at 1:15. The plans are to stop at the Cracker Barrel on the way home for an early supper. I look forward to hearing from you and just so you know it is handicap ac-cessible! I forgot to mention that Michelle will be a part of this show. In March, we will meet at the fellowship hall and play some cornhole. I hope everybody's 2017 has been going well and I hope to be hearing from you soon!

Presbyterian Women Spring Gathering
This year the Spring Gathering will be on Saturday, April 8th at
New Bern First Presbyterian. We can plan a car pool espe-
cially since this location is quite a distance. In the coming
weeks, more information and a registration form will be avail-
able. The Spring Gathering is open to all women of Oakland.
Consider attending this event for a morning of meeting mem-
bers from other churches in our district and hearing a spiritual
message.

on our faith and how we may be of service. If you did
not get a copy of the book being used this year, copies
are available at the Circle meetings. Our Circles meet
the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. or 7:00

Christmas Goodie Bags
Presbyterian Women filled and donated goodie bags to
several of Oakland’s elderly members. This is a PW an-
nual event and we enjoy bringing smiles to those who
may not be able to get out. Oakland Church is thinking
and praying for them.
Pastor’s Letter cont. from Pg 1
At Easter and Christmas, our choir led us in worship with their Cantatas, which used the beauty of music to circumvent our usual barriers to God’s love. In these Cantatas and throughout the year, many people have courageously offered solos and special music to reinforce the mes-sage of the sermon. Also, in an effort to equip more musicians and expand our opportunities to soak in God’s presence through a wide variety of music, Oakland hosted 5 Hymn Sings. At these Hymn Sings, we sang very new and very old hymns using whatever instruments people volunteered to play, and it was awesome. God shows up and shows off as we seek his face in worship.
In addition to singing well, our “special” services were awesome, must-see worship events this year, including Ash Wednes-day, Maundy Thursday, Easter, PullingTOGETHER Commitment Sunday, Mission Trip Sunday, Great Escape Sunday,
Hanging of the Greens, Cantatas, Joy Gift, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Each of these services was thoughtfully planned and well-executed to usher people into God’s pres-ence and to cooperate with the Spirit to impress God’s Word on human hearts. With coordination between Andrew, Keeley, and the worship committee, we used art, movement, music, drama, technology, light, and preaching to create powerful opportunities for people to meet and worship Je-sus. From dream cards at the
PullingTOGETHER Commitment Sunday to the stones and nails at Ash Wednesday to a million candles at Christmas Eve these were absolutely beautiful.
In an effort to bless people outside Oakland, we sup-plied a year’s sup-ply of paper tow-els to House of Hope, a women’s home. We pack-aged 12,000 meals for children suffer-ing a famine in Mozambique, and dozens of supply
bags to welcome women fleeing domestic violence to Har-bor, Inc. Additionally, we assumed lead responsibility for the Backpack Buddies program at Polenta Elementary, which was a natural progression from our 5 Food Drives in 2016. We’re passionate about fighting hunger locally and globally, and so we also explored opportunities to partner with the Food Pan-
try at West Johnston High School, and the Carepoint at 4042. We responded rapidly to Hurricane Matthew’s destruction by col-lecting water, food, and 5 gallon buckets to distribute clean water drinking to affected residents. To round out the year, we pro-vided over $1000 in Christmas gifts to fami-lies at Polenta Elementary through the An-gel Tree program. Everything that is alive grows, and so Oak-land is growing too. Individuals and fami-
lies are growing in their desire to know and follow Jesus, and so Pastor Andrew is often giving book and Bible recommen-dations. But its not just individuals alone, we’re seeing growth as a church. Sev-eral of our Adult Sun-day School classes are overflowing with participants. Children’s Church is a wonder-ful nightmare with over 20 kids regularly overwhelming the Children’s Church hosts. This corresponded to a large Vaca-tion Bible School with kids from all over JoCo. Our youth
group is big enough to split Middle School and High School students. While we only added 5 adult members, 3 youth, and 2 child mem-bers to the rolls in 2016, we will welcome nearly 25 peo-ple first thing in 2017. As the culmination of all that, over 200 people attended worship on Christmas Eve, where they were each asked, “Will you receive the light like Mary or kill the light like Herod?”
2016 was great and 2017 is going to be awesome. We will welcome more families into the life-changing pres-ence of God. We’re going to send groups on 2 mission trips, adult retreats, youth retreats, summer camps, and Vacation Bible School. Our Choir is going to bless us further with Can-tata and skillful music. We will make Jesus famous by making more and better disciples of Jesus.
For the King,
Pastor Andrew
Youth Music News: Another huge thank you to all of our youth, youth volun-teers, set designers and set volunteers for all of the work that you put in to make the Joy Gift service a success. I was amazed at the talent of of our kids, and the collaborative and servant spirit of our volunteers. We really displayed how the church body can work together to do something great.
PYC News: The PYC enjoyed fun, food, and fellowship at the home of the Broadwell’s on Friday, December 16 in celebration of Christmas. Pastor Andrew planned some exciting and messy games for all to play. They loved it! The youth en-joyed pizza and roasting doughnuts over an outdoor fire. PYC is for 6th-12th graders at meets Sundays from 5:00pm-

Taking on the role of co-chairs for the Bazaar was intimidat-ing, but we soon real-ized that we had the support of the entire congregation, church friends, and the Boy Scouts, along with other volunteers. The event was successful because of your con-tributions, including-but definitely not lim-ited to-baked goods, breakfast and lunch items, raffle items, and your time! Our Oakland table was extremely pro-ductive thanks to all of the donations. This year a total of
$8,775.80 was raised at the Bazaar for the Building fund. We cannot write how much we appreciate all of your time in the planning, setting up, coordinating, cleaning, plumbing for over-flowing toilets , and
marketing of the event. We especially have to thank the former Bazaar chairs and the Bazaar committee members for your feedback and guidance for months leading up to the event. The Bazaar would not run smoothly or productively without your help, and we sin-cerely thank you!
With Love, Shelly Watkins & Allison Lee

Glimpse of the Past – The Manse
A congregational meeting was held on Sunday morning, March 10, 1957 for the purpose of deciding whether to be-gin the building of a Manse at Oakland Presbyterian Church. The congregation voted in favor of building as soon as possi-ble.
At a later meeting, the Session appointed a building com-mittee as follows: J. Chris Johnson, Chairman, Mrs. A.T. (Ava) Lassiter, Hugh Baker, J. Edward Barber, and Mrs. L.V. (Rachel) Barbour. They met immediately proceeding with the selection of plans for the proposed manse and made preliminary plans for grading.
Members of the church sponsored a BBQ supper on Decem-ber 13, 1957 for the purpose of raising funds to be applied to the manse building fund. The women made pies and do-nated other food and prepared the supper. The men gave money for the BBQ. Approximately $200.00 was raised, and other contributions which had been given and other which had been pledged in the beginning. Since 1947, interest had been increasing over a period of years. In November
1956, Oakland Presbyterian Church became the recipient of a bequest in the amount of $1,000.00 by Mrs. Katie E. Strowd in memory of her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Edmundson. This was placed in the manse fund.
On April 29, 1954, the old manse was sold to L.R. Allen for the sum of $3.00 with the understanding for him to get it off the church property right away.
In May 1958, the manse was started. Within a short time the outside of the building was completed. The inside of the building had to be completed. The building was an at-tractive modern brick-veneer structure consisting of seven rooms. It is situated on the church property, adjoining the church and is constructed of brick that match those in the church building.
The Session voted and made a motion and it carried that the lumber left over from the manse be sold for $15.00 to Bill Yelvington.
The manse was now completed, debt free, waiting dedica-tion and occupancy by a minister.
Rev. W.A. Brown was the first occupant of the new building in 1966. He served as our minister until 1970. This year the manse was air conditioned. Rev. David Boozer became our minister and moved in in 1971 and served until 1976. Rev. J.T. Donnell served from 1977 until 1987. Rev. Mark Mosteller moved in and served from 1987 until 1993. After this, the ministers bought houses and the manse be-came our church office and also provided classrooms for Sunday School.

Oakland exists to make Jesus famous by making more and better disciples of Jesus. According to our core values, Our P.S.A.L.M., Oakland Prizes Presence, Serves Hard, Always Growing, Leaves Legacy, and reaches Just One More. To do all those things better, this year we’re launching Serve Nights.
Basically, every ministry team and committee will meet at the first Thursday of every month. The first Serve Night, a.k.a. Com-mittee Night, is going to be on March 2, and it is going to be awesome!
To make it easier for families to serve, Serve Night will in-clude dinner for the whole family and childcare. We’ll start serving dinner at 6:30pm, and then begin all our ministry team meetings from 7:15pm to 8:15pm.
Why? Well, we believe all Christians have been called to be ministers and missionaries. That means everyone should be serving someone somewhere; every member should be in ministry. In the past it has been difficult to know how to get involved at Oakland. This night will create a front door for serving. We will have a one-stop-shop, where we can then personally help individuals find ways to serve. This will mean more people are plugged into the life-giving privilege of serving others. More people will mean we better share the joy, and the load, of being a hospital for hurting people, a light-house for lost souls, and an incubator for world-changers.
Additionally, this will keep us from overburdening our-selves or one another, as it will be much more difficult to serve in too many functions. Human beings can only be in one place at a time and therefore only one committee meeting at a time. If you are passionate about multiple things, great, but you will either choose your greatest passion or you will serve on different committees at strategic times of the year. Most often we see husbands and wives serving on different committees, and so under the current set up, they end up spending multiple nights apart. Now families will get to eat together while serving, AND they’ll have more time together at home or loving their neighbors.
Still more, consolidating our committees to a single night a month, will create space on the calendar for more spiritual growth opportunities like weekly Bible Training, Hymn Sings, Prayer Walks, Marriage Seminars, Retreats, and potentially Revivals.
At a deeper level, we pray that Serve Nights remind us that we don’t volunteer at our church any more than we babysit our own kids – serving is just what it means to be family. Everybody at Oak-land, no matter where they are on their spiritual journey has some-thing to give, and we need one another. We are PullingTOGETHER to make more and better disciples.
