TRANSCRIPT
By Cheryl Gaela On Saturday morning, I
got up at the god-awful hour of 6am and trudged around the house getting myself ready to go to the city. Today we were going to earn money for the asso-ciation by doing odd jobs. Finally, with some breakfast in me I woke up a little and scanned the horizon as we passed by everything on the highway. We started out as one lonely little van making our way up to the big city and an hour and a half later we got to our first stop: the Filipino House. From there we met Gemma and Alexis, and they followed us to our first assignment. With a few phone calls after becoming
lost we finally made it to Lisa Hopkins’ house. We shoveled some dirt around a few minutes, and then Mike Hicks and Hans Vergara showed up. We got right to work.
There was some real teamwork going on be-tween all of us. We man-aged to move all the dirt into the garden faster than anticipated which really made everyone happy be-cause someone said, “I hope we get this all done before it rains or else we’ll be shoveling mud.” We got it done, and then we ate some pizza. Our lonely little van was met with three other cars as we drove on over to Lisa’s daughters house. We fixed a few things and dis-
covered three cars had now turned into five cars. Let’s count the volunteers, shall we? Me (Cheryl) my dad (Joel), Gemma, her daughter Alexis, Hans, Han’s wife Rowena, their children, and Lisa all drove to Annie Covillo’s house, the last stop. By the time we were done raking leaves, a real friendship had developed. And what could be better to top it all off than Chinese food? As our lonely little van made its way back to our house that night I had time to think about what we did today, and it is safe to say that the Good Samaritans will go back again to make money for the Ways and Means Committee.

Philippine History VIII: Filipino Immigration Experience in Kansas City By Manuel P. Pardo, M.D.
In 1968, under the leader-ship of Dr. Edilberto Lorenzo, a psychiatrist, The Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City was for-mally organized and incorpo-rated as a not for profit or-ganization in the state of Missouri. The founding Board of Directors were Dr. Arnulfo Sulit, Dr. Manuel Pardo, and Mr. William Ick.
In March 1971, Dr. Frank-lin Farrales, a pathologist, authored the birth of THE TAMBULI as the official monthly newsletter of the association. The masthead, as it exists now, was designed by Mr. Modesto Puno Jr, an architect. In his essay on why the newsletter should be called The Tambuli, Dr. Far-rales explained that Tambuli was an instrument uniquely of Filipino origin, "a horn used by huntsmen, watch-men and towncriers. It was a greeting between friends; a call for help by the lost and the stricken; a warning for an approaching storm; an alarm for a fire; and a call for as-sembly." The first editor was Mrs. Claire R. Ick. The news-
letter was mimeographed at the home of the Icks. The president of the association at the time was Dr. Arnulfo Sulit. The treasury contained $161.51. The membership dues were $5.00 per individ-ual and $10.00 per family.
In 1972, during the presi-dency of Dr. Manuel Pardo, the Sinag Tala Performing Arts Troupe was organized under the able leadership of Mr. Manny de Leon, a former Bayanihan dancer who also performed with the Flower Drum Song stage show in Las Vegas. A taskmaster, Manny drilled his dancers every Sun-day from noon to 6 pm ini-tially at the old St. Joseph Hospital auditorium on Lin-wood Blvd and later at the old St. Mary's Hospital. They put on concerts in schools, performed before various groups in the community and were the main feature at the Fiesta Filipina in Crown Cen-ter Square. They reached the height of their community exposure when they made the cover of the Sunday Magazine of the Kansas City Star on November 26, 1972.
With the Tambuli and the
Sinag Tala giving visibility to the Filipinos in Kansas City, the membership quickly grew to include Filipinos in the neighboring communities of Lawrence, Topeka and even Wichita in Kansas and Blue Springs, Liberty and Warrensburg in Missouri. Sinag Tala had even gone as far away as St. Louis, Wich-ita, Lake of the Ozarks and Manhattan, Kansas.
With the aging of the origi-nal members of Sinag Tala, the second generation has now evolved, blessed by the energy and enthusiasm of youth and pride in the tradi-tion set forth by their elders. TO BE CONTINUED.
Do you like to SING ?
Do you like to DANCE ?
Please join us for a
Recruitment/Potluck Party for those interested in joining the
Sinag-Tala Dance Troupe and Sampaguita Choir.
Sunday, April 3 at the FCC Noon to 2 pm.
Practice will follow from 2 to 5 pm.
Attention!

Consulate General of the Philippines Visits Kansas City and Attends the Diplomatic Ball
The Filipino Association extends its thanks to Ernie and Beth Rosas for hosting the Consulate General of the Philippines, Blesila C. Cabrera. We also thank the Consulate General herself for honoring us with a visit to Kansas City and the Fili-pino Cultural Center last March.
Mrs. Cabrera’s agenda during her stay in Kansas City was full of activity. Dr. Baltazara Lotuaco, Dr. De-nys Collins, and Dr. Luisa Shepard hosted Mrs. Cabrera for dinner. The
next morning, the Consu-late General visited the Fili-pino Cultural Center, where she met FAGKC President Joel Gaela as well as other association members who were part of the Saturday volunteer cleaning crew. Additionally, Mrs. Cabrera was able to meet the Arnis students whose class is held every Saturday at the FCC.
Mrs. Cabrera’s visit also included attending the Eth-nic Enrichment Commis-sion’s Diplomatic Ball. The Diplomatic Ball was spon-sored by representatives of
nine Asian countries. As the Consulate General of the Philippines, Mrs. Cabrera was one of the dignitaries recognized dur-ing a special procession.
Mrs. Cabrera expects to return to Kansas City again soon. She plans to bring her staff with her on the next trip so that she may be able to offer consular ser-vices.
Health Notes By Cory Sorio
SUN SAFETY The days are longer and
warmer. Who doesn’t welcome the sun after the cold and dreary days of winter? A Maori proverb “Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall be-hind” expresses hope, life, and joy. Warmth, light, energy, brighter moods, Vitamin D to strengthen our bones, photosyn-thesis to nurture our plants, heat that kills some pathogens: we are grateful recipients of these sun gifts.
But wait – too much sun can have negative effects. Overex-posure to ultraviolet (UV) ra-diation, the invisible rays from the sun, is a primary factor in the development of some health problems, which include the following: ☼ Skin cancer – This is the
most common of all can-cers, according to the American Cancer Society. Dark skin has an innate SPF (sun protective factor) of 4-5 and lowers the chances of getting sun-burned but doesn’t provide immunity to skin cancer. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are com-mon among Filipinos. Ma-lignant melanoma, the most aggressive of the skin cancers, is not unknown among Filipinos either.
☼ Eye damage – UV radia-tion increases the risk for development of cataracts (loss of transparency of the lens). Burning of the cor-nea called “snow blind-ness” or photokeratitis could lead to corneal scar-ring when it occurs repeti-tively. Other damages to the eye include pterygium (tissue growth that can block vision), skin cancer of the eyelids, and genera-

Consulate General Cabrera stopped in at the Filipino Cul-tural Center during cleaning day and brought treats for the cleaning volunteers.
The Consulate General was in good company at the Ethnic Enrichment Commission Diplomatic Ball, surrounded by a large contingency of fellow Filipinos.

planning outdoor activities. This is a daily forecast of the intensity of the sun’s UV rays, with ratings from 0 to 10+. Avoid deliberate exposure when the UV index is predicted at 5-6 or higher. Here’s a website for more information: http://www.epa.gov/sunwise/uvindex.html.
☼ Bring out the umbrellas! They are not called “parasols” (Sp, for the sun) for nothing. Trees may not offer complete sun protection but they provide about 60% protection from the sun’s rays.
☼ Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and long-sleeved, tightly-woven clothing when going outdoors.
☼ Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with 15 SPF every day, even on cloudy days because UV rays can go through clouds. Apply sunscreen before going outdoors with particular attention to the face, hands, arms and exposed feet. Reapply every 2 hours, after swimming or after perspiring heavily.
☼ Limit exposure to reflective glare from snow, water, sand, tile, concrete and buildings. Your eyes and face get
tion of the macula (part of the retina where visual perception is most acute).
☼ Photoaging/Wrinkling – Chronic ex-posure to the sun changes the texture and weakens the elastic properties of the skin, causing wrinkles and fur-rows, easy bruising, brown or “liver spots, and actinic keratosis (precancerous lesions).
☼ Immune system suppression – Sun-burns can alter the distribution and function of disease-fighting white blood cells in the body. Adverse ef-fects include impaired response to immunizations, sensitivity to sunlight, and reactions to certain medications.
The effects of exposure to ultraviolet rays are cumulative over the years. But it is never too late to start some sun protec-tion practices. ☼ Follow the Shadow Rule: No
Shadow- Seek Shade. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun is at its highest intensity. Limit sun expo-sure from 10 AM to 4 PM when the sun’s rays are strongest.
☼ Refer to the daily UV index when
TAMBULI STAFF
almost twice the risk of UV damage from reflected glare.
☼ Teach and role model to your children good sun protection habits. The dam-age that leads to adult skin cancers starts in childhood.
☼ Examine your skin from head to toe at least once every three months. Check with your health provider if you ob-serve “blemishes” that do not heal with medication, or “moles” that change in size, shape or color.
So… after all that is said, what’s the best way to go about the summer sun? The bottom line is that some sunlight is impor-tant and even necessary for a healthy and high quality life. Taking a few sensible precautions will help you to enjoy the sun while lowering your chances of sun-related health problems.
