Hello all,
October has come and almost gone and so has the 2018 Convention and Expo in Atlanta. Big news for ASPE, we now have our first female society president. The new presidents name is Carol Johnson. Carol is from the Alabama chapter and previously elected to the ASPE board as the VP Legislative. I am sure Carol will do a great job moving the Society forward. Goof Luck Carol. Here is a list of the rest of the Board of Directors including Carol and our own Tom Sharp.
2018 ASPE Board of Directors• President: Carol Johnson, CPD, LEED AP, CFI, FASPE• Vice President, Technical: Don Strickland, CPD, GPD, FASPE• Vice President, Education: Blair Minyard, PE, CDT, CPD• Vice President, Legislative: Brianne N. Business Meeting – “Best Decision Ever” This year the ASPE Society hired an official Parliamentarian who was a bonified expert in “Roberts Rules of Order”. During the meeting this gentleman resided as the meeting chairman for bylaws portion of the meeting. This portion of the meeting was so successful that we finished both days of the meeting 1hr ahead of schedule. For those delegates who have attending these meetings in the past this is the most grueling part of the meetings and we knocked it out in record time.
This years business meeting included 36 proposed bylaw changes from the Bylaws Committee, which included our own David Lewis. Of these 36 proposed bylaw changes, 26 were approved, 6 were rejected and 4 withdrawn.

All in all it was a good convention and glad it was one located close to home.
I hope everyone has an opportunity to get out to our next chapter meeting. Refer to the cover page for location and topic of this month’s technical presentation. To help keep everyone on time we are planning to begin the technical portion of the meeting by 11:45, so please plan to arrive in time to mingle and get grab some grub before we get started.
See you on Tuesday.

Welcome to another monthly ASPE meeting!
- Meeting location: Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Training Center 904 Post Street, Charlotte, NC
- CPDT & CPD: Registration for the CPDT-2018 is now closed and testing will be on October 25
and 26. Good luck to all who are testing; be sure to let us know the outcome. Folks interested in
the CPD exam have a bit longer to wait. Registration period runs from December 1, 2018, thru
March 21, 2019, with exam dates of April 4 and 5, 2019.
It is hard to believe we’re already on the downside of October. Thanksgiving and Christmas are
right around the corner. The 2018 ASPE Convention & Expo in Atlanta was a huge success and
possibly, the biggest one yet. As your VP of Technical and AYP, I had the opportunity to attend
the VP Technical meeting and the AYP Meeting. I skipped the Atlanta Chapters golf outing to
attend haha! I got the opportunity to meet with other VP techs. To see what they were doing
within their respective chapters. I have some great ideas that I think all of you will find
educational and enjoyable.
During the entire convention and expo, there was a clear indication of youthful growth. In fact,
there were more young people at this convention and expo than I have seen at the previous
two. However, there is still a void in finding younger folks for our industry. If there's a younger
person within the plumbing department at your office they should be attending our meetings,
the tech symposium, and the convention and expo. I’m planning some AYP events so let's get
them involved!
For this month’s presentation, Jason Hefner at Pro Marketing is bringing in Bill Shockley from
Wade Drains to talk about Siphonic Roof Drainage. This means of drainage started in Europe
and has gradually made its way across the pond to the United States. It utilizes negative
pressures generated by the height of the building to draw rainwater from the roof. Some
advantages to this type of roof drainage are the cost, space savings due to the use of smaller
drainage pipe and the slope of the drainage pipe within the building and below grade. We’ll
learn about how siphonic roof drains work, code and regulation changes made to
accommodate siphonic roof drainage and design criteria.
We look forward to seeing you all at this month’s meeting!

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone and their families survived Hurricane Michael. If I didn’t see you at the ASPE convention in Atlanta you missed a great time! It was my first convention and I really enjoyed networking with chapter members, society board members and manufacturer representative. If you have never attended an ASPE convention and expo I highly recommend you do. This month I wanted to highlight some key points that was made at the legislative council meeting at the convention but before I do that, I want to let the Charlotte chapter members know that every last Wednesday of the month, Mecklenburg county code enforcement will be holding a Plumbing consistency meeting to discuss code concerns and the upcoming 2018 NCPC code changes taking affect January 1st 2019. The next meeting will be October 31st at 8am. If you can attend I highly encourage you to do so. I will begin attending them regularly, so if you have any code concerns or questions please let me know and I can pass them along.
• ASPE has created a Legionella task group. This task group will work to develop good design practices to help tackle legionella. One of the main objectives will be to of bridge the gap between the energy code and legionella.
• ASPE will be adding a link on the society’s website that will allow its members internet access for code changes; a state list of codes and contacts.
• ASPE has recently promoted Ramiro Mata to Senior Director of Technical & Regulatory Affairs. Ramiro’s primary role will be to attend code committee meetings as a ASPE representative. This is exciting news for us as a society! This will give ASPE a voice in code council meetings. No more surprises when code changes are being proposed. Ramiro will be attending the ICC code hearings held on October 27th-29th and will be a great resource for the society going forward
• The ASPE PE working group has been attempting to get an option on the PE exam that concentrates on plumbing for those that choose to specialize in plumbing engineering. This option has to be approved by seven states before it can be considered.

Finally, fall is here! It feels so good to turn off the AC and open the windows. Hopefully, things will start to dry out for everyone affected by Michael.
I would like to welcome a new member to the Charlotte ASPE Chapter, Jerry Price with Price Marketing. Hope to see you at some meetings!
This year I attended the Women of ASPE at the convention, and I’m so happy I did. It was one of those things where I walked in Friday morning and wondered “why did I sign up for this?”, and before long I discovered why. The speakers were great, including the first female to become a member of the plumbers union in New York City. It was nice to have some time to get to know the other women, including our new president, Carol Johnson. Saturday morning we worked with 30 Girl Scouts, introducing them to plumbing engineering. WOA is open to any ASPE member, male or female. I strongly encourage the women to join, just send an email to Stacey Kidd, [email protected] and she’ll put you on the list.
Our membership emphasis continues to be working to keep our members. Most organizations are more interested in adding new people. Our current path is to retain more members, hopefully by offering a valuable product and providing a welcoming place to establish connections.
Take a drive, enjoy the weather, and we’ll see you Tuesday!
