As the hot summer days of August unfold and the nights days slowly grow dimmer, many of are anxiously awaiting to return to our Fall schedule of activities. Since I have not finished several tasks such as selecting choral music for the upcoming season, I fear that I will be laboring with these projects well past the upcoming Labor Day. I quickly learned the art of wearing many hats and juggling many activities simultaneously. Unfortunately, I was not able to complete some of my summer projects due to caring for a very ill mother. I spent parts of July and August with her in York Hospital and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. I now better understand that caring for a sick loved one is very physically and emotionally draining and exhausting! Alas, we look for excitement with new activities and fresh new challenges in our daily lives and our musical endeavors. Our York Chapter board members met on several occasions over the summer to plan the details of our upcoming program year. In addition, the York Chapter will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010 and again the board has stepped up to the plate to offer some stellar programs to include an organ recital featuring Paul Jacobs of the Juilliard School of Music. We are also planning an organ crawl to New York City to visit and hear organs at some very note-worthy locations. In the midst of the summer, I had the opportunity to attend the Region III Convention in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The convention was filled with some very fine programs, concerts and outstanding organists performing to include the ever-dazzling Cameron Carpenter. The workshops and hospitality were all well received. I was fortunate to have run into a college classmate from the Cincinnati Conservatory. We had toured Yugoslavia together on a

choral tour in 1989 and we enjoyed reminiscing. She lives in Hampton Roads and she went home one evening and brought back her photo album with pictures of us together 20 years ago! We hope you will share and reminisce with one another at our first event of the program year, O r g an s a n d H o r s d’oeuvres at the homes of Byron Daudelin and Rodney Barnett. Come and play their pipe organs and share some fellowship and buy some used organ music. We hope to see you at many of our programs this coming year. Victor Fields, Dean

F O R M E R YO R K E R R E T U R N S F O R A N N I V E R S A RY On Sunday, September 20th at 9:30 AM, the congregation of Union Lutheran Church, 408 W. Market St. York, will celebrate its 150th Anniversary with a service commemorating the 40th Anniversary of its 60 Rank, 4-manual, Moller Pipe Organ. Former choir director/organist, Edwin Starner, of Boston, MA, who served the church from 1963 -1970, will serve as guest organist and direct an augmented anniversary choir. Mr. Starner, a Westminster Choir College graduate, recently retired as organist from The First Church of Christ, Scientist (The Mother Church) in Boston, MA. Having served in several churches on the East Coast, he taught piano and organ at Westminster, later working as Director of Continuing Education for Westminster Choir College of Rider University, Princeton, NJ. Starner helped to design the organ at Union Lutheran in 1969, and later became a sales representative for the Moller Organ Co. in Hagerstown, MD. The community is invited to attend the anniversary service and greet Mr. Starner at the Coffee Hour afterward.
