Angelo Cardono says the Gold Mountain Memorial Park hasn’t been abandoned. It’s waiting for a manager.

Cardono is the lone remaining owner of the cemetery in Big Bear City that opened in the early 1980s. There were eight own-ers behind the cemetery, but all have died, Cardono says. State regulations have changed, and a licensed manager is required. The fee for the license and test is about $850, Cardono says, a far cry from the $25 or so the previous manager paid.

Gold Mountain Memorial Park isn’t a money-making operation. It was never expected to be, Cardono says. It was always a community project, he says.

The partners included Dr. Phillip Reames and Ivan Cowper, among others. They were all flying buddies of Cardono, he says. Reames’ wife wanted to be buried in Big Bear, Cardono says, and that spurred the idea for developing a cemetery.

The partners located property in Baldwin Lake and received approvals from San Bernardino County for the cemetery on that site in 1981. In 1982, environmental con-cerns were raised by Tim Krantz, who said rare plants in the area would be devastated by the project.
