I n spite of the security challenges that have bedevilled the North-east subregion for the last decade, synergy, collaboration and spirit of partnership with relevant agencies and communities is the life-force that keeps University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) on course. This is evident by the numerous courtesy calls on

the University management to foster coalition, alliance and concordance in ensuring that the University mis-sion and vision are achievable. It is with this spirit of understanding and harmonious relationship that man-agement of the University of Maiduguri was able to attract so many projects that hinge on infrastructural development, scholarships, government appointments and other recognitions by both the local and national communities. It is indeed part of the dividend of the University team-player-effect that members of the Man

o’ War Club vowed to defend University of Maiduguri in the face of grave security challenges.

In order for the University to benefit optimally from the fruits of its endeavours, it deemed it necessary to instill discipline and enviable work ethics amongst its staff. It is in this bid that the University management introduced the Personal Identity Management Biometric Machine (PIM) to capture real-time staff attendance, access control and security checks. The efforts of all these optimization processes have yielded positive divi-dends with improved quality of students turn-out that competes favourably with products from other institu-tions. The emergence of Unimaid students in 2nd position at the recently concluded Chartered Financial Ana-

lyst Competition is a testimony to this acclamation.

This issue also covers the elections of Heads of Department, Dean and Sub-Dean of Veterinary Medicine, an inspirational interview rendezvous with the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aliyu Shugaba and condolence visits to the families of late Waziri of Bama Emirate, Alhaji Kyari Sandabe and Late Profes-

sor Yaganami Karta.

Happy birthday to our amiable Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, NPOM, Dan Rimin Kal-

tungo and Shettima Ilmube of Borno. Read about these and many more.

T he University of Maiduguri manage-

ment had been in the forefront among

public universities in Nigeria in the in-

tegration of information and communication tech-

nology into teaching and learning environment.

The management had deployed e-examination, e

-learning and e-management solution-based soft-

ware customized and tailored to meet its needs.

The Registrar, University of Maiduguri, Mallam

Tijjani Bukar said the need for the deployment of

the biometric machines in the offices was for ef-

fective service delivery and security checks.

The Registrar further reiterated that the University

invested in the state-of-the-art “Pulsetime” Person-

nel Identity Management (PIM) and biometric At-

tendance software system authentication technolo-

gy to instil discipline in work ethics. The device he

said, uses biometric identification on real

time attendance using Access Control Terminals to

deliver services. The time clock terminal reads the

fingerprints and faces of staff, allowing each em-

ployee to clock “IN” or “OUT”. The machine does

not warrant “clocking” IN or OUT in proxy as seen

on the traditional attendance register.

The PIM Multi-Biometrics technology identifies

unique physiological characteristics of each em-

ployee by reading an employee’s unique finger-

print, iris or face identity in order to prevent the

common problem of employee time theft. With

sensor scanning of fingerprints in less than a sec-

ond, employees’ clock IN and OUT timely inform-

ing the management on authentication of those

who genuinely worked within the call of duty,

those that deserve overtime and absenteeism.

The PIM Multi-Biometrics Attendance technology

empowers Management to make informed real-

time decisions, putting a wide array of analytics

into action and instant access for management to

reports on Absentees, Late comers, Early closing

and on security.

The Registrar further said, with the enrolment of

Unimaid staff on the machine, it makes the pro-

cess of identification check-in and out more con-

venient for the huge number of staff under the

registry.

In an emergency meeting of Senate, a member

admonishes the use of the traditional attendance

register in use and urged Senate Secretariat to

adopt the use of the PIM machine for members to

sign in electronically for their attendance.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

Unimaid Bulletin: Can we know the man Profes-

sor Aliyu Shugaba?

Prof. Shugaba: I am Professor Aliyu Shugaba, the

current Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Ser-

vices, born in the year 1963 in Buratai village of

Biu Local Government Area, Borno State.

Unimaid Bulletin: Your educational background?

Prof. Shugaba: I started my primary education in

Buratai Primary School in 1970 then later pro-

ceeded to Government Science Secondary School

Bama in 1976. I joined the Remedial Science pro-

gramme of the University of Maiduguri in 1981

and obtained my B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the

University in 1986. I then proceeded to Ahmadu

Bello University Zaria for my M.Sc. in 1995 and

PhD in 2005 in the same course.

Unimaid Bulletin: What motivated you to join the

academic line?

Prof. Shugaba: Well, it’s personal interest in shar-

ing my knowledge with people, and I believe that

the best way I can impact on people’s life is by

going into the knowledge industry and whatever

knowledge I am able to acquire from there and

whatever experience, I will be able to share with

students, colleagues and the entire world.

Unimaid Bulletin: What have you achieved so

far as an academic?

Prof. Shugaba: Well, as an academic, I have

been able to train quite a number of students

both at the undergraduate and postgraduate lev-

els, postgraduate including M.Sc., and PhD, and

for this…., Alhamdulillah; it has been very well,

and we have been able to research in areas that

have led to the generation of knowledge that we

have shared with the rest of my colleagues around

the world. We have published quite a lot. The

knowledge that we have been able to generate is

helping in solving problems around the world.

Unimaid Bulletin: Any regret for finding yourself

in an academic profession?

Prof. Shugaba: I have no iota of regret! In fact,

that’s a profession and area of endeavour that I

enjoy so much. The best thing for me now, and

what I enjoy most, is being in the class to teach

students, going to the lab to conduct some experi-

ments and being able to make deductions from

those experiments.

Unimaid Bulletin: Any challenges?

Prof. Shugaba: Yes, quite a number of challenges.

In this part of the world, we lack state of the art

facilities. In some of the areas we’re operating, you

will find that the challenges are so enormous; fund-

ing is not adequate but we are trying to make do

with what we have and I always say that if we do

not use the little we have to make an impact, then it

means even if we have so much we may not be

able to make use of that. Challenges are there but

we are trying to surmount them.

Unimaid Bulletin: What is your perception of life?

Prof. Shugaba: My perception of life is to live a

very simple life; to make other people realize that

life is not all about ‘bed of roses’; life is something

that comes with challenges; but every challenge is

supposed to strengthen you and every challenge is

supposed to make you a better person.

Unimaid Bulletin: Have you ever received any

award of excellence?

Prof. Shugaba: Yes. Recently, I have received some

awards and those awards have further motivated

me to begin to think of more things I can do. The

award is not just for show or to impress but to tell

me that people are watching me, people are fol-

lowing me and what I do is of interest to them. That

is how I look at it and it is motivating me to do

more in my own chosen area of endeavour.

(Cont’d from Page 12)

Unimaid Bulletin: What is your best food?

Prof. Shugaba: Hmmm. Well, my best food is

pounded yam with bitter leaf but there’s a tradi-

tional food from my own area that I love so much.

When I eat those foods, I know that I have eaten.

Unimaid Bulletin: What are your hobbies?

Prof. Shugaba: My hobbies: I like reading and

travelling; these are very good hobbies for me

and some physical exercise within my own area of

residence.

Unimaid Bulletin: What do you dislike most?

Prof. Shugaba: Wow! What I dislike most is dis-

honesty. I want everyone relating with me to be

honest in approach and I will also be happy in

dealing with such person.

Unimaid Bulletin: Who is your mentor?

Prof. Shugaba: Well, talking about mentor, I have

had many people who have mentored me right

from my secondary school to my university days

and then to my being an academic here. I started

as junior academic, some people mentored me into

becoming the Professor I am today and not only

that, coming into the administration I have been

mentored by many other people. Professor J.D.

Amin introduced me into administration in this uni-

versity, Professor Mala Daura continued and gave

Unimaid Bulletin: Any piece of advice to the new-

ly appointed academic staff of the university?

Prof. Shugaba: The newly appointed university

staff, what I would advise, let them be patient.

Academics is not a place that you will just become

a Professor overnight; it takes time. For those in

the sciences they have to go to the lab to conduct

researches. Let them be patient. Let them work

hard and learn from their senior colleagues. That’s

my advice.

Try again to be patient; with patience, a student

will come out with the best and I want them to face

their studies very well. Let them work towards get-

ting knowledge not getting certificate. If you ac-

quire the knowledge, worked for the knowledge,

anywhere in this world you will stand out as a truly

educated person. And you will think very well be-

cause Albert Einstein said “education is not about

the learning of facts but it is about the ability to put

that knowledge into critical thinking”.

(Cont’d from Page 14)

So, you think very well when you’re well educated.

Let them be patient. Let them learn, not just work

for the certificate. Certificates can be there, you

can have hundreds of them but once you don’t

know, they’re of no use! And Allah (SWT) said in

the Holy Quran “Are those who have knowledge

and those who have no knowledge alike?” Certain-

ly they are not the same. That is it.
