Our Legacy 2017 Building Program in Marshall ISD is moving forward, and we have been looking back at various people, programs and events that have helped shaped MISD over the years in our “Red Brick Wall: Building A Legacy” series as we prepare to move into our new schools in 2017.

Each week in the Maverick Insider, we will feature an entry from our “Red Brick Wall: Building A Legacy” blog located at www.marshalllegacy.blogspot.com. The blog updates with a new article every Tuesday and Friday during the week, so check it out if you have not already done so and look back with us over some interesting moments and accomplishments in the history of our

Today’s entry: It’s football season in Marshall, and the Mavericks are back on the field under the Friday night lights. But the real push toward this season -- and most seasons in Maverick history dating back to 1984 -- begins in the spring with the annual “Maverick Maker” offseason program.

This article from the Feb. 17, 1985 edition of the Marshall News Messenger highlights the very first “Maverick Maker” under then-new head coach Dennis Parker.

Just what is a Maverick Maker? It’s different things to different people.

To Marshall High head football coach Dennis Parker it’s the perfect way to get his team in shape for offseason work and a means of pulling the squad closer together as a family, so to speak. To 72 Marshall football players it’s two weeks of hard, ex-cruciating work, demanding the most of their bodies and minds as they shoot for perfection. Once they reach perfection the Maverick Maker is over, so the incentive is there to do it right, quickly. Parker has final say on when he feels the entire team has completed the Maverick Maker to his satisfaction. That was accomplished a week ago and Tuesday night the player’s parents along with the Marshall Maverick Booster Club, will get a first-hand look at the Maverick Maker when they view a videotape of it at a 7 p.m. meeting in the teacher’s lounge in the high school. “We want to let the parents see what their kids have done, that way they’ll know if we’re working them too hard,” Parker said with a laugh. “They (parents) need to see what their boys are going through. during next Monday’s September regular meeting. The school board received a report and saw the design for the renovated facility during Thursday’s monthly Agenda Review meeting held in the Pat Smith-Gasperson Board Room. Mr. Andre Brackens, of Huckabee, Inc., the lead architect for the Legacy 2017 building projects, gave the board an overview of the design to create a K-5 STEM Academy at what is currently Sam Houston Middle School. The project was included in the $109,210,000 bond issue approved by MISD voters in May of 2015. All projects in the building program – which also includes three new K-5 elementary schools and a new junior high school, which are currently under construction – are scheduled to open for the 2017-2018 school year. The STEM Academy renovation project at Sam Houston will include a new addition to the current building, which will serve as the school’s kindergarten wing. ing, is more mental than anything else. “The Maverick Maker is really more mental than it is physical. they need to learn that when they get knocked down they have to get back up.” While it is also mentally demanding, it is also physically demanding. The 45-minute exercise session is broken into three parts: mat work, weight work and agility work. The 72 varsity and junior varsity candi-dates are broken into three groups, with each group spending 15 minutes at the designated sessions. Parker roams between the three rooms, while assistants Ardis McCann, Bill Harper, Leonard McAngus, Buck Buchanan,

Willie Todd, Tom Thrower and Ken Ivy send the Mavericks through their workout. Things begin when the Mavericks come busting out of the varsity locker room after getting instructions from Parker. The noise the group makes is deafening as they sprint out ready to attack the Maverick Maker. As time passes the noise level increases, but mostly one hears words of encouragement from one player to another, which is what Parker and his staff are after. “That’s what they’ve got to learn from this, to help pick the other guy up. We’re not going to win with one or two guys, it takes the whole team and that’s what we’re trying to get

across, that we’re a family. Everybody talks about coming together as a team in Septem-ber, they’re a team right now,” Parker said, glancing toward the varsity locker room. Parker is an old hand at introducing such a program. he was associated with it at Con-verse-Judson, where it was called the Blast Off, in connection with the team’s nickname of the Rockets. “I’ve used it before and everywhere I’ve been it’s produced results. Not only in getting the squad in shape but in developing a real bond between the players.”

strooms; and custodial and mechanical space. Renovations to the existing facility will include a commons/collaboration area; a new science lab; renovation of four existing restrooms; addition of a controlled entry vestibule; repurposing of the stage area of the existing cafetorium into two additional classrooms; and realignment of existing fifth grade classrooms. Other areas of the existing facility will receive cosmetic improvements such as new paint and flooring. The current gymnasium in the facility will be renovated with new heating and air condi-tioning units, a new rubberized gym floor, and additional insulation. Outside the building, a new two-lane parent drop off to accommodate up to 50-70 cars at a time will be constructed on the west side of the facility, to ease traffic on East Travis Street during drop-off and pickup times. Ad-ditionally, a new faculty/staff parking lot will be constructed on the northwest end of the facility. The renovation will also include the ad-dition of a playground on the east side of the building, as well as chain link security fencing around the property. The renovation of Sam Houston Middle School is budgeted at $7,788,023.14. This is an increase in the original budget of just over

$2.5 million, but savings following the actual bidding of other projects allowed for the increase in renovation budget and scope of work for the Sam Houston facility. The school board will be asked to take action on the proposed design during Mon-day’s meeting, with bidding on the project

expected sometime in November, Brackens said. Work on the new wing could begin as early as December, with the bulk of work in the existing building taking place next sum-mer in order to have the facility ready for use in August of 2017.

a pot oF golDAt WBT, we want all students to experience STEM first-hand. The September STEM project is about rainbows. Students explore what causes a rainbow, how crystals refract light to create rainbows and then we made a rainbow in a glass. Using a glass, mirror and flashlight as a light source, students learn how to produce an artificial rainbow by manipulating the light. The hands-on experience is very exciting and children have increased awareness of what it takes to make this phenomenon.

What an exciting morning at Marshall High School as we awarded the first Patterson MISD Staff Member of the Week for the 2016-2017 school year to MHS Geometry teacher, Mrs. Sandra Garrard! As you can see from the pictures, Mrs. Tina Brown, principal at MHS, had Mrs. Garrard a little concerned when she was asked to step outside for a minute but she quickly cheered up when she learned that she was being honored!Pictured with Mrs. Garrard and her stu-dents are Tammy Cherry, Kristin Skinner and Suzanne West-Willis of Patterson Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram and Mrs. Tina Brown. Congratulations to Mrs. Garrard for her dedication to educating the stu-dents of MISD!

Since the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, Patterson Auto Group sponsors the weekly “Patterson Auto Group MISD Staff Member of the Week” program, in which campus principals and department directors have the opportunity to nominate a teacher or employee from their campus or depart-ment on a rotating basis. This nominee is then met on Monday or Tuesday morning with a surprise visit from Patterson representatives, complete with balloons, fanfare, a $50 gift certificate and a free auto detail from Patterson. MISD has presented Patterson Auto Group with recognition for the “Stand Up For Texas Public Schools” program established by the Texas Association of School Board (TASB) for their participation and sponsorship of the Staff Member of the Week program. “Stand Up For Texas Schools” is a program established by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to recognize the generous assistance provided to public school districts by businesses and other community organizations.
