Nanki-Poo,awanderingminstrel,hascometothetownofTitipuinsearchofYum-Yum,agirlwithwhomhehasfalleninlove.Ko-Ko,herguardian,hadbeencondemnedtodeathundertheMikado’scapriciouslawagainstflirting,buthassincebeenappointedLordHighExecutionerontheassumptionthathewillbeunwillingtoenforcealawofwhichhehimselfmustbethefirstvictim.WhileKo-KoplanstomarryYum-Yumhimself,Nanki-Poowoosthebeautifulgirl.Yum-Yumreturnshisaffection,butsheisunwillingtodefyherguardian.
Meanwhile,Ko-KolearnsthathispostistobeabolishedbytheMikadofornon-performanceofduty.HissearchforavictimisinterruptedbytheappearanceofthedespondentNanki-Poobentonsuicide.ThetwomenstrikeadealthatNanki-PoomaymarryYum-Yum,ifhewillagreetobecomeKo-Ko’sfirstvictimattheendofamonth.
ThegeneralrejoicingthatfollowsthisannouncementishaltedbythearrivalofKatisha,anelderlyladyoftheMikado’scourt.ThwartedinhereffortstoclaimNanki-Pooasherlover,sheattemptstorevealhistrueidentity,buttheentiretownshoutsherdownastheactends.
ActIIfindsYum-YumandNanki-Poopreparingfortheirwedding.ButKo-Koproducesasurprise—“bytheMikado’slaw,whenamarriedmanisbeheaded,hiswifeisburiedalive!”Yum-YumishavingsecondthoughtswhentheapproachoftheMikadohimselfisannounced.
Ko-Kopanicsanddecidesthatadeadbodywillnotbeneedediftheproperpapersareproduced.HesendsNanki-PooawaytomarryYum-Yumandpreparesa“certificate”ofNanki-Poo’sexecution.
TheMikadoarrivesintown,accompaniedbyKatisha,andisdelightedtoreceivethenewsthattherehasbeenanexecutionuntilheseesthenameofthevictim.Ko-KonowlearnsforthefirsttimethatNanki-PooisthesonoftheMikado.AlongwithPooh-BahandPitti-Sing,whohaveactedaswitnessestothefakeexecution,Ko-Koissentencedtobeboiledinoilfor“compassingthedeathoftheHeirApparent.”
WhenKo-KogoestoNanki-Pooforhelp,theminstrelexplainsthatheoriginallydisguisedhimselfinordertoescapeKatisha’sattentions,andhehasnointentionofbeinganythingbut“dead”untilsheismarriedtosomeoneelse.Tosavehisownneck,Ko-Kowoosandwinstheladyinrecordtime.WhentheMikadoreturnsfromlunchtofindhissonstillalive,andKo-KomarriedtoKatisha,thestoryistiedupintruetopsy-turvyGilbertianfashion.

Whenits132-yearhistoryistakenintoaccount,The Mikadoisundoubtedlythemostpopularpieceofmusicaltheatreofalltime.Fordecades,aproductionofG&S’ssatiricaloperacouldbeseensomewhereintheEnglish-speakingworldeverydayoftheyear.Itslibrettohasfounditswayintoourlanguagewithexpressionssuchasthe“grandPooh-Bah”and“Letthepunishmentfitthecrime.”Severalfilmshavebeenmadeoforaboutthework,includingMikeLeigh’s1999filmTopsy-Turvy,whichpresentedanintimateportraitofthecharactersofSirW.S.Gilbert,SirArthurSullivan,andtherepertorycastoftheoriginalD’OylyCarteOperaCompanyfollowingG&S’sinspirationanddevelopmentoftheveryfirstMikadoproduction.

Insteadofsuccumbingtothistemptation,NYGASPreachedouttonewcolleaguesfromdiversebackgroundstodeviseasolutionworthyofthechallengebeforeus.Ourcostumes,choreography,anddirectionarecompletelyoriginal–unrestrictedbythetraditionsofpastperformancepractice.Mostimportantly,therepresentationoflifeonstageisnolongeradepictionofJapanesepeople,butratherafantasticalportraitofVictoriansinadreamworldthatisinspiredbytheJapaneseculturecaptivatingEnglandatthetimeofThe Mikado’screation.
Whilewecan’tspeakforothers,thoseinvolvedinoureffortshaveagreedthatthewrittenlibrettorequiredverylittlerevision.TherearemomentsthatclearlyshowGilbertwasamanofthe19thcenturywithphrases,forexample,thatmakecommentsabout“Japaneseattitudes.”Consequently,weareinstitutingrevisionstothosereferencesarepartofthenewperformancepractice.

Formorethan50years,TheTemptationshaveprospered,propellingpopularmusicwithaseries
ofsmashhitsandsold-outperformancesthroughouttheworld.
ThehistoryofTheTemptationsisthehistoryofcontemporaryAmericanpop.AnessentialcomponentoftheoriginalMotownmachine,TheTemptationsbegantheirmusicallifeinDetroitintheearly‘60s.However,itwasn’tuntil1964’s“TheWayYouDotheThingsYouDo,”writtenandproducedbySmokeyRobinson,turnedthemintostars.Anavalancheofhitsfollowed—“MyGirl,”“It’sGrowing,”“SinceILostMyBaby,”“GetReady,”“Ain’tTooProudtoBeg,”“BeautyIsonlySkinDeep,”and“IWishItWouldRain.”
Aboveandbeyondtheirfabulousvocals,theclassiclineupofOtisWilliams,MelvinFranklin,PaulWilliams,EddieKendricks,andDavidRuffin,becameknownfortheirsmooth-steppingandflawlesspresentations.“TheTemptationsWalk”becameastapleofAmericanstyle.
Whenthe‘60sand‘70sturnedpolitical,TheTemptationschangedtheirtone,dress,andmusicwithproducerNormanWhitfieldleadingtheway.HisTemptationshits,manyfeaturingDennisEdwardswhohadreplacedDavidRuffin,burnedwithintensity—“RunawayChild,”“CloudNine,”“ICan’tGetNexttoYou,”“PapaWasaRollingStone,”and“PsychedelicShack.”

LarryBraggsispassionate,powerful,andveryspiritual.Thesearealsotheattributesoftheamazingvoiceofthistwo-timeGrammy-nominatedartist.Cutfromthesameclothassomeoftheworld’sgreatestvocalists,Larryhasoneofthemostnotablevoicesinthebusiness.Withavocalrangeofmorethanthreeoctavesandacommandofthestagelikenoother,Larryhasbecomeoneofthemostelectrifyingentertainersontour.Thishasgainedhimtherespectandpraiseofhispeersandfansallovertheworld.

ZakirHussain’sMastersofPercussion,anoutgrowthofZakir’sduettourswithhislatefather,the
legendaryUstadAllarakha,begantheirbiennialappearancesin1996toprovideaplatformforrarelyheardrhythmtraditionsfromIndia.Overtime,theensemblehasexpandedtoincludegreatdrummersandpercussionistsfrommanyworldtraditions,includingjazzandtheoccasionalstringedinstrument.
2019isthecentennialyearofAllarakha’sbirth,sothiswillbeaveryspecialMastersofPercussiontour,addingtheastonishingNiladriKumaronsitar,thepeerlessEricHarland(CharlesLloyd,Sangam)onWesterndrums,andtheKeralaDrummersfromthesouthwesterncoastofIndia.Performingbothtogetherandseparately,itwillbeawe-inspiringbecausetheyreallyaremastersandZakirHussainisatruemaestrowhocanbringoutthemagicineveryoneonthestage–andintheaudience.

Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar and Group: The Drummers of Kerala IntheIndiantradition,Mattanuur’sfirstteacherwashisfather,andfromanearlyage,hebeganhisstudiesofThayambaka,acall-and-responsestyleofdrummingusingtheSouthIndianchenda,acylindricalinstrument.Thisartisoftenassociatedwiththestory/playstyleofKathakali,aclassicalsouthIndiandanceform.Eventually,Mattannurwasassignedtheroleof“MelaPramani,”andperformeditinTempleFestivalsacrosssouthernIndia.Induetform,hehasplayedwithsuchgreatsasUstadAllarakhaandPadmashreeUmayalpuaramSivaraman.HewasawardedthePadmasreebythepresidentofIndiain2009.
