THE MOST IMPORTANT NATIONAL ELECTION IN THE HISTORY OF ST KITTS AND THE FEDERATION TAKES PLACE ON MONDAY NEXT WEEK.• OntheonehandtheLabourParty

isrunningonitsconsiderableandcomprehensiverecordofachieve-mentsoverthepastfifteenyears.ItisalsobasingitsclaimforcontinuityofrepresentationofthepeopleofStKittsandNevisonitspresentachievementsincluding

• thesuccessfultransitionfromsugarandthediversificationoftheeconomy;

• theveryvisibleincreasesinthequalityoflifeandstandardoflivingofthepeopleofthiscoun-try;andtheenlightenedgover-nance,especiallyplanning,thathasenabledthiscountrynotonlytosurvive,butalsotoimproveitseconomicperformancewhenitsCaribbeanneighboursareexperi-encingdifficulttimes.Ontheotherhanditscompeti-torisaMovementthathasnotmovedsinceitwastoppledfromtheseatofGovernmentin1994.

Itclaimstobeofthepeoplebutiscontrolledbyaparticularclasscharacterizedbya“com-missionagent”mentality–buyingcheapandsellingdear.

Overthepastfifteenyearsithasenjoyedtheprerogativeofall

OppositionpartiesofbeingabletoengageindestructivecriticismoftheGovernmentinpowerwithoutbeingrequiredtodoorsayany-thingconstructive.

So if their track record is suchthat nobodywill employ them foreven the most menial jobs, whyshould they be considered for thetop political posts in our country?If theyhavenotdoneanythingforfifteen years, why should they beevenconsideredas employable es-pecially during a time of extremechallengestothesurvivalofSmallIsland Developing States (SIDS)?

•SpendinginSt.Kitts-Nevisbycruiseshippassengersisgreaterthanthatinanyotherislandstateintheregion.

•Evenasmajorinvestmentprojectsareclosingdownboththroughouttheregionandaroundtheworld,investmentprojectsinSt.Kitts&Neviscontinuemovingforward,providingjobs,increasingincomes,andinjectingcapitalintooureconomy.

•Essentialgoodsandcommodities,especiallyfoodstaplesthatconstitutemostofthefamilyandhouseholdneeds,areaffordablebecausetheGovernmenthassuccessfullycontrolledthecostofsome40foodandnon-foodessentialitems.

•Agriculturalproductionhasincreasedbymorethan600%between2001and2008.

•Morethan500,000cruiseshippassengersarrivehereeveryyear.

•Povertyplummetedfrom11%in2001to1.4%in2008.

•Onethousandyoungpeoplebenefittedfromsecond-chancejobtraining

•Asurvey,publishedbytheDepartmentofManagementStud-iesattheCaveHillcampusoftheUniversityoftheWestIndies(UWI),foundthatintheOECScountries,St.KittsandNevishasthemostoptimisticinvestmentoutlookoverthenext12months.

•TheredesigningoftheberthingfacilityatPortZanteandtherevetmentofthebulkheadbytheSt.Kitts-NevisLabourPartyGovernmentnotonlysavedPortZante,butalsosecuredthefu-tureofthecruiseshipindustry.

•St.Kittshasexperiencedgrowthoftripledigitfiguresinitstourismindustrybetween2005/2006and2008/2009.

•ArecentFlorida-CaribbeanCruiseAssociationreportfoundsignificantgrowthinpassengerarrivalsandspending.Accord-ingtothestudy,totalpassengerandcrewvisitsincreasedbynearly250percentfrom200to2009.TotaldirectexpendituresinSt.Kittsincreasedevenmoredra-maticallygrowingby550percentfromUS$6.7millioninthe2005/2006cruiseyeartoUS$44millioninthe2008/2009cruiseyear.

•Asaresultofthe250percentincreaseindirectcruisetourismexpendituresfromthe2005/2006cruiseyearforSt.Kitts,theeconomicimpactsincreasedaswell.

•ThePAMGovernmentbuiltatotalof251homesinSt.KittsbetweenFebruary1980andJune1995comparedtotheLabourGovernment’stotalof3,891islandwidebetweenJuly1995andJune2009.

•Inthethirdquarterof2009,overEC$10millionwaspaidoutinlongtermSocialSecuritybenefitsandEC$2,250,000inshorttermbenefits.

•BritishAirwaysisexpectedtobring10,000passengerstoSt.Kitts’RobertLBradshawInternationalAirportbytheendoftheyearandthenumbersareexpectedtosignificantlyincreasein2010.Thiswillbethehighestnumberofvisitorsaweeklyair-lineservicehaseverbroughttoSt.Kittsovera12-monthperiod.

Historyhasdemonstratedthatveryfewleadersareabletogiveupsomeoftheirownpowerandautonomyforthegreatergoodofthepeople.TheleadersinTobagodidit,theleadersintheGrenadinesdidit,theleadersinBarbudadidit.

Brantleydidnotwanttocooperateandwasnotverywillingtodothat,hebecameanadvocateforsecession.However,hisplantosecedefailed.

NowitisallegedthatPAMandit’sleaderChickenLittlehasofferedBrantleytheleadershipoftheFederationandtheverycountryfromwhichhewantedtosecede.Howironicandhowdesperatecanapartyget?

WhatisBrantleygoingtodoasPrimeMinister?MyfellowKittitians,don’teventrytoimaginewhatthismaniscapableofdoing.

BythewaywhowouldbeleaderofthePAMpartyunderaBrantleyasPMgovernment?Worse,ifBrantleyisallowedto“manners”Kittitiansaswehearheisplanningtodoandaswefearheiscapableofdoing.AstheChristmascarolsays;“You better watch out You better not cry You better not pout I’m telling you why.” Why?BrantleyplansoncomingtotownandPAMwillputhimthereiftheycan.
