Installing student version of Inventor 11 Pro (with AutoCAD 2007). The student version can be downloaded from http://engineersrule.org Do not use the auto-downloader or you will not get AutoCAD (disk 6 & 7). You can checkout a DVD disk from me with the software already set up to install. I suggest doing a disk scan (Error-checking) and Defragmentation on your hard drive before installing any new software. Especially if your computer is more than 6mths old. You should do this about once a month. Disconnect any peripherals like printers & network cables before starting. If it is a notebook computer disconnect the mouse (if used) and use the touch pad instead. Do Error-checking first and then defrag – I would leave defrag to run overnight as it may take several hours. Your computer will run faster if the files are not fragmented all over the hard drive. Before You Install There was a problem found with Macromedia Flash after Inventor was released. 1. On the Start menu (Windows), click Run. 2. In the Run dialog box, enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\UninstFl.exe to clean all Flash 8a registries. Note: Make sure to enter the entire path. 3. On the Start menu (Windows), click Settings > Control Panel. 4. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs. 5. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, select Macromedia Flash Player 8. Click Remove. Note: Although Flash Player 8 is listed, this is really version 8a. If you want more information on this go to http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=7118892&linkID=4183228

2. In the Run dialog box, enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\UninstFl.exe to clean all Flash

8a registries. Note:

Although Flash Player 8 is listed, this is really version 8a.

Before You Install Exit any programs running.

Turn off all virus scanners. You can usually do that by right clicking on the scanner icon in the system tray or Right click on My Computer and select Manage.

Expand Services and Applications and click on Services. Find anything to do with your particular virus scanning software and right click on Started and select Stop. (Setting will return to default when you reboot.)

Ready to Install Put the disk in your optical drive and the Inventor installer should start automatically. If it doesn’t start automatically – go to Start Run and browse to the DVD and click on the filename Setup.exe.

Be sure to put a checkmark next to Autodesk Mechanical Desktop 2007 – this will give you AutoCAD 2007. I have had some people have trouble installing Autodesk Data Management Server 5. If you have trouble later where you can’t get Inventor to install the first thing I would do is uncheck this and try again (or you could uncheck it now and then install again unchecking all the other options after a successful install of Inventor).

Before You Run When you installed Inventor it assigned a temporary Serial Number 000-00000000. When you run the software you will need to activate the software with your own serial number. This is a three step process. 1st you will need a personal Serial Number. 2nd you will have to request an Activation Code based on a specific Request Code tied to

your computer. 3rd you will receive the Activation Code from Autodesk via email. You will need to have an active internet connection. (We turned your virus scanner off earlier – turn it back on now or reboot and verify that it is back on.) Before running Inventor you will need to get a personal Serial Number for the software. You can do this by going to http://engineersrule.org and select Download You will not need to complete the download if you are using my disk – only start it to get your serial number. Once you have started the download you should see your personal SN (I’ve struck a black line through mine at right.) This number will stay there if you should forget to right it down. Just log in again.

The page recommends using the auto-downloader. I don’t think it downloads file 6 & 7 (AutoCAD) (but I’m not sure) and if you are going to use my DVD the files are all set up for you anyhow.

Just start the download of one of the files to get a personal Serial Number.

If you wanted to download all of these files you would then need to unzip all files to a common folder. You might get a warning as you are unzipping that files copied might overwrite existing files – you would just accept this. You might also get a prompt that a file is Password protected – for some reason Windows causes this when the filename and path is too long – the solution would be to unzip to a folder (with a short name like AIP11) at the root of the hard drive (C:\AIP11\).

You don’t need to do all of that since I have already done that for you – all you need to do is establish your own serial number for the download.

Start Inventor and select Activate the product.

Your computer will generate an activation/registration Request Code specific to your particular computer only. Enter your Serial Number that was assigned at the time you downloaded the program (or started the download).

You will then send the Request code to Autodesk to get an Activation Code.

Autodesk will email back to you an Activation Code that will work only on your computer from which the Request Code was generated. It should only take a1-2 minutes to get the email. Copy and paste the Activation Code into the prompted box.

Installing Service Packs Once you verify that everything is working correctly you will want to install 2 Service Packs to update Inventor. On the DVD find the file named Inventor11_SP1.msp using Windows Explorer. Double click on the filename to install. Reboot the computer. Repeat for Inventor11_sp2.msp Reboot the computer and make sure Inventor is running properly. Misc.

If you experience graphics problems you might need to go to Tools>Application Options>Hardware tab and change from Direct3D to OpenGL and exit and restart Inventor. (maybe even try rebooting) Running AutoCAD When you installed Mechanical Desktop you also installed AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD 2007 as these run on top of AutoCAD. To start plain AutoCAD go to Start>Programs>Autodesk>Mechanical Desktop>AutoCAD. You can right mouse button hold and drag on AutoCAD and drag an AutoCAD start icon out to your desktop if desired. Let me know if you have any problems or anything that wasn’t clear in this document that might help other students.
