JOINT RELIGIOUS LEGISLATIVE COALITION (JRLC)
DAY ON THE HILL, FEBRUARY 7 Being the Hope paid for our church’s membership in this organization.
JRLC is the largest and most inclusive interfaith social justice interest group in Minnesota. Founded in 1971,
JRLC is guided by God’s vision of the common good as reflected in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions.
People of diverse faiths bring vision and wisdom to the public realm for the well-being of Minnesotans.
JRLC develops an extensive body of public policy statements and influences Minnesota legislation in many
policy arenas, including welfare reform, housing, health care, human rights, criminal justice, environmental
stewardship, tax policy, ethics in government, economic justice, bias crimes, firearms regulation, and other policy
areas. Each year JRLC sponsors Day on the Hill which provides an opportunity for people of faith from our
state to join together, be inspired, learn about critical issues, and mave an impact at the State Capitol on issues
important to people in our faith traditions. February 7, 2019, will be JRLC’s Day on the Hill, an opportunity for
you to get involved in the lawmaking process.
GOD IS IN CONTROL Being the Hope has contributed $1,500 to God Is in Control.
Last January, a group of ten United Methodists traveled to the Village of Aworowa, Ghana, to work with the
Methodist Church, four schools, an orphanage, a health clinic, and a regional hospital. They brought funds to
provide over 350 children with school uniforms, repaint the inside of the church parsonage, start a new village
business, and provide medications for the local clinic and hospital. In the past, funds have paid to ship clothing,
school supplies, and medications as well as assisting the Methodist Church Choir Director obtain a hip
replacement. This group visits Ghana every two years, so if you are interested in learning more, mark your
calendars for January 2020.
MN INTERFAITH POWER AND LIGHT Being the Hope has contributed $1,000 to MNIPL
The mission of Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light (MNIPL) is growing an interfaith climate justice
movement. The focus is empowering individuals to build a movement capable of creating a just and livable
climate for all inhabitants of our world.
The Grove UMC Sustainability Group has worked with MNIPL on several community events. In the fall of
2017, MNIPL provided a speaker for a program focused on climate change and renewable energy. In the spring
of 2018 MNIPL provided speakers for a “solar house party” highlighting the church’s solar panels and suggesting
opportunities for homeowners to reduce use of electricity purchased from power companies. In the fall of 2018,
before the election, the church hosted an MNIPL door knocking event in the church neighborhood encouraging
voters to consider environmental justice issues as they voted.

Has your family ever been homeless?
Have you even imagined it happening?
Perhaps you lost your job or had prohibitive medical bills so you couldn’t pay the mortgage or rent.
Perhaps you were evicted when your apartment was condemned due to no fault of your own.
Perhaps you just moved to the Twin Cities and could not find affordable housing. Or maybe you had
a job which required a working vehicle but you couldn’t afford to both get the car fixed and pay the
rent. Imagine the stress! Where would you turn for help?
The first call for help in Washington County is the St. Andrews Community Resource Center
in Mahtomedi. St. Andrews not only provides counseling and tools for finding housing and jobs, but
also works in partnership with Hope for the Journey Home, a family shelter which provides
temporary housing for up to seven families. The shelter is located at Guardian Angels Catholic
Church in Oakdale. As a participant in this ministry since its founding in 2012, The Grove UMC
staffs the facility for one week twice a year. Our next week is March 3-9.
Can you help by volunteering? Each day, there is a dinner shift (with a flexible start time
between 4 and 5:30 until 8:15) and an overnight shift (8 pm – 9:15 am). Everyone receives
orientation from a staff person. A cook is on staff, and those who stay overnight, do get to sleep!
Children as young as 5-6 years old are welcome to come with parents. There is also a background
check and online course requirement for adults, but it is easy to do through our church.
To volunteer or for more information, contact Pat Marzolf @[email protected].
Also, check out the Hope for the Journey Home website at

The Grove United Methodist Church (The Grove) has a
well-established endowment fund.
Hope for the Future.
The fund is designated to help you and your
family establish a legacy gift
where a portion of your gift (up to 3%)
is distributed annually to the ministry
cause of your choice.
Plan A Gift to Your Church
Including your church doesn’t mean forsaking your children. You can provide for both. Simply
state in your will or estate the following:
I give The Grove United Methodist Church Hope for the Future Endowment Fund a specific dollar amount or a percentage of my estate, to be used by the church for the designated need(s) of my choice: general purpose, scholarships, missions, capital needs, and/or worship and music.
(Suggested language for will.)
Your planned gift will make a much greater impact than you can imagine. It may also
provide you with significant tax advantages.
For more information please contact
Pastor Dan Wetterstrom at
651-738-0305, ext. 13 or at [email protected]
Dear Friends,
As long-term members of The Grove UMC,
Jan and I have had ample time and opportunity
to think about what legacy we would like to
leave our church. We intend to include our
congregation in our will and have told our
children of our specific wishes. We have also
notified our ministers of our intentions. We
believe that we are called to be intentional in
our giving so that the ministries of our church
can continue to share the ministry and love of
Jesus Christ.
Even though we intend to leave ten percent of
our estate to the church, we do not know how
much money might be used up with future
medical expenses, hospitalizations, nursing
home stays, and end of life care. Having said
that, we decided to participate in a different
approach to our church endowment giving.
We are going to give what we can now, while
we can. In 2017 we determined an amount we
wanted to give to the endowment program and
then decided to give one tenth of that amount
each year for the next ten years. This allows us
to continue to be intentional in our giving in a
way that we can control. Granted, the church
still will get ten percent of our estate when we
are gone but given the rising cost of medical
care, that amount may be zero. This way we
know our love for this congregation will
continue into the future.
I encourage each of you to consider joining us
in making sure that The Grove UMC is
included in your estate planning. Our church is
involved in many programs that are important
and necessary in building and sustaining the
love of Jesus Christ in our community. Please
help make sure our congregation can continue
into the future.

In the Know - - - News You Need about Your Church!
MAKING SENSE OF THE BIBLE
Tuesdays, February 5 to March 5, Rm. 207
Woodbury Campus Rm. 201 - Book $20
Book study led by Pastor Dan Wetterstrom
In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton invites
us into an honest conversation about the Bible. The
book begins with foundational questions such as How
and when was the Bible written? Who decided which
books made it into the scriptures and why? How
literally must we read it? And, Is the Bible ever wrong?
From there, Hamilton considers the real questions
people frequently ask that continue to divide Christians
and denominations alike, including: Were Adam and
Eve real people? Why is God so violent in the Old
Testament? Why would Paul command women to
"keep silent in the church"? Is Jesus the only way to
salvation? How does God view homosexual people?
Is the Book of Revelation a guide to
the End Times? In approachable and
inviting language, Hamilton addresses
these often misunderstood biblical
themes leading readers to a deeper
appreciation of the Bible so that we
might hear God speak through it and
find its words to be life-changing and
life-giving.

The World Is Awake — A celebration of everyday blessings by Linsey Davis
This colorfully illustrated book will be eye-catching to read with your child.
Spending a day with the two characters in The World Is Awake will remind your
child of the many blessings God has given. Learning to be thankful throughout the
day is a good habit to begin early in life. Linsey Davis is an Emmy award winner
and an ABC news correspondent who wants to encourage young readers to find the
essence of God in the world. You will find plenty of room for discussion after
reading this book together. Enjoy the conversations with your little one.
Review by Bonnie Rohde
Sold on a Monday by Kristina McMorris
Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, this is a story of struggling reporter
Ellis Reed who takes a picture of two children sitting in front of a sign “2 children for
sale.” He has no intention of publishing the photograph but when it leads to his big
break, he has to deal with the devastating consequences to a family he barely knows.
He and fellow hopeful reporter Lillian Palmer struggle with their own dark pasts as
they decide how much they are willing to risk to mend the fractured family. I found
it a wonderful story of love, redemption and the unexpected paths that we find
ourselves. Review by Sandy Osborn
In This Moment by Karen Kingbury
This is a new Baxter family series book. Luke Baxter, now a lawyer, has been hired
to defend Wendell Quinn, a high school principal. A parent is suing Wendell
because he started a volunteer Bible study after school. Hamilton High was plagued
with drugs, crime and teen pregnancies, and the principal decided this was the best
way to help students. Because attendance was voluntary, Luke thinks he can win the
case. One teacher and his family stand by with support, and their faith keeps them
hopeful. Can religion be in public school settings? Is the proof that things have gotten
much better at school a convincing defense? You will enjoy the ending of this book
concerning how faith holds out! Review by Jackie Easton

CUB SCOUTS GET
HANDS ON TRAINING
Cub Scouts in our Pack 9056 experienced reptiles up close
and even handled some of them. Look closely at the
demonstrator’s
arm to see what
later got passed
around.
Only a few were
willing to handle
the snakes at first,
but after a few
minutes virtually
every scout had
handled at least
one snake and generously shared this experience with
their leaders too. Their parents weren’t quite as willing to
get involved.
The Cub Scouts were totally engaged watching the
Amazing Jeffo perform his magic tricks. Jeffo is totally
blind, which the Scouts forgot when he asked for a
volunteer and hands went up all over the place. What was
even more amazing than his tricks was how the scouts sat
so still watching his show.
Anyone wanting to join Cub Scout Pack 9056 which meets
in Red Rock Elementary School or another pack where
your son or daughter goes to school, is encouraged to go to
the following website www.JoinCubs.com.
Questions about scouting may be directed to Dick Hansen,

UMC, at [email protected].
Dinner for Eight, Round Two
It’s time for a progress report on an activity
that began this fall. Dinner for Eight is a
monthly supper club for adults. Each group
sets up its own routine about where and when
it meets. We have nine groups ranging in size
from four to eight members, with mixed
membership of couples and singles. Everyone
reports that they have enjoyed the chance to
meet new people and to renew friendships.
Does Dinner for Eight sound like an
activity you would interest you? We are ready to start round two, adding
people in this second round. We are
interested in taking on some new looks for
our supper club; for example, let us know if
you would like to start a group that meets
during the day. Please remember that our
groups include both couples and singles.
You want to sign up this supper club?
There are a few ways to do it.
