Huhu Studios – From Sleepy Hollow to Bustling Beijing

Huhu Studios has gone into a number of deals with Chinese partners and has set up joint

ventures in Beijing, Trevor Yaxley said in a recent Skype interview from Beijing.

The Snells Beach-based entrepreneur and his team have signed a multi-million deal with Chinese partners to produce two animated movies and five television series over the next three to four years.

“The dollar value of our latest venture is far larger than anything we’ve done before in China,” says the digital media pioneer. “We’re building up to 250 staff at Huhu China in Beijing – we’ve already got some Kiwis working here and more coming – and we’ve hired another 45 people to do part of the project at our Snells Beach facility.”

Staff numbers have almost doubled at Huhu Studios which is situated behind locked gates on the campus of the former Lifeway College in Snells Beach near Warkworth. While Trevor is in China the studio is managed by a team of professionals who have been with the company for many years.

China has become New Zealand’s second largest trading partner with two-way trade reaching a record high of $23 billion last year. Huhu has become a major stakeholder in the digital media industry and now has two studios in Beijing; Huhu China Studios and Huhu PF, with partners in Singapore and Canada. Huhu China is developing a creative media centre which includes an animation studio, an IP development hub, retail stores, a pre-press and design facility and a future training academy.

Trevor conceived the idea for an animated children’s TV series called Buzz & Poppy when a huhu bug flew into a window of his home one night. He set up Huhu Studios in rented office space in Warkworth in 1996 and he and long-time partner Bill Boyce hired nine 3D artists to create the first TV series. Since those early days Buzz & Poppy has sbeen seen by more than 100 million children in 58 countries. “It’s amazing what God can do,” Trevor marvels.

Today his firm uses state-of-the-art technology to create original content and computer-generated animation and employs a growing team of animators, concept artists, modellers, rigging, texturing, lighting and technical experts.

Nowadays Trevor spends about half of his time in China and his wife Jan and family members often join him. Their apartment in Beijing is near the cultural tax-free zone of Beijing and adjacent to the new Huhu China Studio which was officially opened last month by New Zealand’s Ambassador to China, the Rt Hon John McKinnon.

In the early 2000s Huhu did some research into the growth of the Chinese movie industry and predicted it would become the world’s number 1 box

office. This prediction was fulfilled in one month of last year, when China topped world box office takings, ahead of North America for the first time.

“Animation is a hugely developing industry in China,” Trevor comments. “Where-ever you look, on television in advertising and movies, there’s some form of animation. New Zealand is a tiny nation but we’ve got a lot to offer China. We’ve got a phenomenal creative bent and we’ve got technology.”

Success didn’t come overnight. Trevor has made more than 100 trips to China over the last 16 years and during the first six years of his travels he had more than 100 meals with prospective partners, but they never talked business. “Then one day a representative of one of world’s largest media companies said, ‘Let’s make a deal. The Chinese won’t talk business without getting to know you first at face-to-face meetings,” he observes.

In 2014 Huhu was part of the New Zealand Film Commission delegation to Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, and at the 2015 Beijing Film Festival, a co-production was announced between Huhu Studios and China Film Animation which is part of the state-owned China Film Group. In 2016 Huhu signed several more film and financing deals which were witnessed by former Prime Minister, John Key during his visit to China.

Production is well underway on Beast of Burden, the first official animated co-produced feature film between New Zealand and China. The movie features four-footed animals called Thoriphants who escape from a life of servitude to humankind and set out on a dangerous journey to learn how to stand upright again. The film is due for release in 2018 and is the first of several co-productions planned with China Film Animations.

Huhu is NZ’s longest running specialist 3D digital media studio and is renowned for producing values- themed TV series like Vege Tales for USA-based creator Big Idea/DREAMWORKS Entertainment, and films like Noah and The Ten Commandments (2008). The Ten Commandments is first full-length 3D animation movie made by a New Zealand company, in conjunction with Singapore partner STDM and Promenade Pictures USA. It took 250 man-years to make: “Animation is an intense process,” says Trevor. “On a good day the studio may produce four to six seconds of finished animation.”

‘boy,’” he laughs.At age 17 Trevor met his future

wife. “Jan was sweet 16 when we met,” he recalls. “We went to church together and both responded to the salvation message on the same night.” They married 18 months later at the Methodist Church in Mt Roskill, aged 19 and 18 respectively.

Busy family years followed and they had three children, Mark, David and Rebecca. Mark is prayer warrior with Downs Syndrome and lives part-time at the Yaxley’s home and part-time at the Lifeway Home in Warkworth, which was founded by the Yaxley family.

Tragically, Trevor and Jan lost their second son in a car accident at age 16. Rebecca survived the accident and she and her husband David have one son and three daughters, the eldest of whom was recently married.

Inspired by the work of Salvation Army leader William Booth, Trevor and Jan set up Lifeway College in 1986 and ministered the thousands of students over the next 20 years. Trevor also wrote two books about the Salvation Army which were published locally and internationally, and he is now recognised as an Army historian.

Lifeway College ran diploma courses in Christian studies, counselling, business and digital media for many years, and in 1989 it merged with Paul de Jong’s LIFE Leadership College. The Lifeway School of Animation continues to deliver animation and film curriculums under the Edenz brand, and many of its graduates are employed in New Zealand and international studios.

The Lifeway campus has now been acquired by Kingsway School in partnership with the Yaxleys for future development as a training facility.

In 1990 the enterprising couple launched the Rise Up campaign and travelled around New Zealand with a large team of enthusiastic young and not-so-young people, supporting churches in their work in local communities, schools and prisons.

Trevor has started many businesses and he and a long-time friend pioneered the development of plastic bubble-wrap machinery. More recently he set up a plastics factory in Warkworth to re-use waste plastic and produce recycled and bio-degradable rubbish sacks, bags and industrial-agricultural film. The business was been sold and his main focus is on

trade developments with China.

“From a Christian perspective, China has totally opened over the last five years,” says Trevor. “The state church I attended in Huangzhou is alive and thriving and has 10,000 people. Beijing also has a growing Christian population and the church I go to on Sunday mornings has 7,000 people.”

He finds the Chinese ‘amazing’ to work with and is impressed by their hospitality.

“It’s the kindness of strangers that mirrors to me the true heart of China. My long-term friend Henry Wong and I were recently walking through the market in 30 degree temperatures, amidst throngs of people and vendors conjuring up exquisite foods, with beads of sweat trickling down our faces,” he recounts. “Two teenagers noticed we were sweating and came to our aid with a packet of tissues. This thoughtfulness by strangers is unheard of in other countries.

“To encapsulate 16 years of first-

hand experience: in one two-week trip I’ve been smiled at and greeted by more strangers than in the past 10 years in my own nation. And if I’d listened to all the warnings I was been given years ago about doing business in China I would have been robbed of some of the greatest experiences locked between the book-ends of this delightful adventure called life.”

Highs and lows? “A low was when our son David went home in 1986. A high was when I married my wife Jan 52 years ago,” says Trevor whose home is still on the campus in Snells Beach.

Omri JaakobovichBorn and raised on a secular kibbutz in Isra-

el, Omri dreamed of serving in an elite army unit; the best of the best. So let’s find out what

happened and how a middle-aged woman brought this hardened Israeli paratrooper to his knees at the feet of the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua (Jesus).

The kibbutz offered communal housing so Omri didn’t grow up in a house with his parents. He was just 3-years old when he first understood that one day he was going to die. “Why was I even born if one day I have to die?” It made no sense to him at all. He preferred to have never been born than to be born, to live, and then to die.

Between high school and the army, he served for a year with a youth movement. He was strong and fit and nothing was going to stop him. The Paratroopers offered the hardest training you could possibly get and he tackled it head-on. Six months basic training followed by basic infantry training; the hardest two months of his life. He had almost no sleep and had to walk 120km at the end. On a physical level, he was one of the very best. Nothing was too difficult. But he had a weakness: he always had to prove that he was better than everyone else; he had to be the star of the team.

“I was trying the whole time to show my offi-cer; I’m better than you, and you can’t break me”. In 1990, at the end of training, Omri’s officer said to him, “Omri, I’m sorry to tell you... although you’ve got some amazing abilities, you are undisciplined and I’m forced to dismiss you from the team.” He felt like a fully inflated balloon that had just burst into millions of pieces.

In 1996 he bought himself a round-the-world ticket to Thailand, Sydney, Fiji, Tonga and Hawaii; for the beaches, sunbathing, girls and full-moon parties. In New Zealand, Omri went unshaven for a couple of months and wore a hat like the ‘Druze’ men. He rocked up to the counter in a hostel in

Kings Road, Paihia in the Bay of Islands. The re-ceptionist said to him, “You’re an Israeli!” When he asked her how she knew, she said, “I know you’re an Israeli. You’re God’s chosen people. You’re very special people to God!” He thought, “Oh boy, what have I walked into?”

In 1995, a year before he’d left Israel, Itzhak Rabin had been murdered, which had deeply affect-ed Omri. Rabin was the Israeli Chief of Staff during the Six Day War of 1967, in which the Israeli army recaptured the most holy place of the Jewish people – the old city of Jerusalem, including the Western Wall. Almost 30 years later a religious Jew mur-dered Rabin in the name of God. As the lady talked, she kept repeating, “You are the chosen people of God. You are a special people.” He decided to tell her the story of Izhak Rabin and how, for the first time in history, a chosen leader of Israel had been murdered by a religious Jew, in the name of God. Then she said, “But it’s not the first time in the histo-ry of the people of Israel that a Jew killed your cho-sen leader.” Omri was shocked, “Excuse me? What are you talking about?”

“This is what you did to Yeshua!” she said. “Who is Yeshua?” asked Omri.

“Yeshua was the chosen leader of the Jewish people. He was chosen by God, and the people of Is-rael didn’t want to have Him as their leader.” Omri was stunned. In school he’d learned about all the people who really influenced humanity; like Alexan-der the Great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon and Hitler, but none were Jewish and none had grown up, or lived, in Israel. None of them had the influence on humanity that Yeshua of Nazareth had. Like all Is-raelis, Omri wasn’t taught anything about the New Testament; it was completely ignored. “How in the world can it be, that they make no mention of Him whatsoever in Israel?” Omri thought.

domly opened a Bible in the school library at Jeremiah 31:31, “The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.” He was so frightened that he shut the book and forgot all about it. He understood that there were just two possibilities. Either Yeshua of Nazareth rose from the dead, or He didn’t rise from the dead. If He didn’t rise from the dead, what’s the big deal? He could continue the path he’d been walking till this day... “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” But if Yeshua did rise from the dead, may-be he could also rise from the dead. Omri remembered when he was little and wondered why he had to be born if he had only to die one day. He began to read the book of Isaiah. On every page of the Jewish Scriptures he could see the Messiah, and was convinced beyond all doubt that Yeshua from Nazareth was indeed, the Messiah of Israel. The contrast between what he expected from the New Testament and what he found out reading it was huge. When he came to faith in Yesh-ua, he thought he was the only Jew in the whole world that believed Yeshua was the Jewish Messiah.

To this point, Omri had never ex-perienced a more terrible feeling, than his dismissal from the Paratroopers. For years, he’d hated that officer. And now, seven years later, coming to faith in Yeshua ‘in the blink of an eye’ he understood the whole story. He saw that he’d just been trying to prove to that officer how he didn’t need him;

how much better he was than him; and that this was how most people be-have with God. Many people live their lives thinking they don’t need God and they don’t want Him. But, just like the officer in the army, so it is with God – He always has the last word.

Omri has made his home in New Zealand, and sees his role training the Gentiles (non-Jews) how to share the Messiah with the Israelis, through hospitality. As he was touring New Zealand with Jacob Damkani, found-er of Trumpet of Salvation to Israel; Omri had divine inspiration to ask people after the meetings, if they would like to host Israeli travellers in their homes. In February 2000, Omri founded HIT (Hosting Israeli Trav-elers); an exclusive travel club for Is-raelis around the world. The response was fantastic and by the end of their tour they had around 350 names of evangelical Christians happy to host Israeli travellers. It was a great start. The HIT network enables Christian lovers-of-Israel to show their support to His people through the simple act of hospitality. Now, 17 years later, Omri continues to blaze trails across the world, building new networks with the launch of HIT International.

A Tale of Two Endings?

Max and Liz are both ten years old and are good friends at school.

They both come from Christian homes where they are encouraged in their re-lationship with God and church atten-

dance. When Max goes to church with his

family on Sunday morning, his par-ents are greeted at the door and given that week’s bulletin. Max is ignored,

but heads off into the kid’s church hall where the music is pumping and 50 other kids are already chas-ing a large ball around the room. Af-ter 10 minutes, a biscuit and drink, the music team crank up the deci-bels and the kids shout and dance and praise God with all their might. The children take a well-earned seat as the lights are dimmed and a pro-fessional and biblically sound DVD is shown with that week’s animat-ed Bible Story. Afterwards, they are directed to a variety of amazing art and craft activities to choose from, at stations around the hall. Max loves the construction stuff and spends the next half-hour there, until the music starts up for the final round of fun and upbeat songs. By the time the songs are finished his parents are waiting to take him home. His parents ask him how it was, and Max says he has had fun and shows them

his craft handiwork.Liz, on entering her church, has

on door-duty. Mr Marshall says how nice it is to see her, and asks her about her ballet exam she has just sat. He passes her a fist full of Mints in a secret handshake. Liz finds a seat with her parents. Mrs Hansen (now in her 90’s) turns in her seat, and asks Liz how those nasty girls have been at school. She reassures Liz that she is still praying about it for her. The wor-ship team get up and the kids are invited to come up and join them. Liz does so, grabbing a shaker from the available box of instru-ments. While not understanding the words in some of the older songs, she can see very plainly from the front, just how much they mean to some of the people in church, as they close their eyes (some with tears) and raise their hands. She giggles to herself, as some of the adults muck up the action songs; looking quite un-coordinated, but they are laugh-ing and enjoying praising God. During share time, Liz is riveted to her seat, as Mr Simpson shares how painful it has been since los-ing his wife. He thanks the church for all their wonderful support and says he wouldn’t have got through without their love and God’s peace. Liz wonders how he can still say he loves God, after

being through such a sad time. She decides she will send him a nice card with muffins when she gets home. Liz likes the preacher’s sermon because he uses lots of stories and pictures. Sometimes he brings in props or gets the kids to act something out for him. Whenever he uses big words, he ex-plains them and reminds even the kids how they can apply the truths he is sharing. In the discussion time af-ter the sermon, Liz gets to ask some questions and hear what others have been challenged or encouraged by. It always amazes her how everyone seems to get something slightly dif-ferent out of the same sermon. Oth-ers seem so interested in what she is thinking and she feels comfortable enough to say a short prayer thanking God. Even a couple of five-year-olds, who really look up to her, follow her lead and say a sentence prayer too. Af-ter the “Amen” she looks up and won-ders why some of the adults are wip-ing their eyes. During communion, it is clearly explained what it all means, and why they share it as a church fam-ily. On the way home, she and her par-ents chat about the service, testimo-nies and sermon. They discuss some ways they could serve and encourage others in the church as a family. Liz shares about the card she wants to send to Mr Simpson.

a movie? Lee Strobel: I was shocked

initially because the book came out in 1998, so it’s been around a long time. Yet a year ago, in about the same week, I got phone calls from two studios, Pure Flix and another one, saying we would like to do this film on your life, on your story, which really struck me as odd coming out of the blue after all these years. It’s not something I pursued, but as soon as I brought it up, I thought, ‘Duh! That’s a great idea, because there are a lot of people who won’t read a book but they will go to a film, especially young people.’ So if you want to speak their language, the language of film, is the

language of the millennial generation and a lot of my generation. So I thought here’s a great opportunity to bring this message of hope and redemption and evidence and faith to a new audience and hopefully people who wouldn’t be exposed to the book because they wouldn’t pick up a 300-page tome.

What was it like seeing the first footage? The conversion scene, where Lee finally accepts that Christianity is true, is especially memorable.

Lee: That was a very moving scene. We were then on set when they filmed it. We had seen it filmed. It

was so moving that after it happened that Mike came out after the scene was filmed and I went up to him to say thank you for being honest and authentic in the scene which can be so hokey if it’s not done right, if it’s not done authentically. I went up to thank him and I just burst into tears. I said, ‘Thanks, Mike, for being honest and getting it right.’ It was very moving to see and other scenes are hard to see. The arguing, the conflict, the drinking and so forth. Those were hard to relive, but they’re honest, they’re true. In fact, one scene in particular with my dad…

Leslie: Robert Forrester played his dad, who by the way, looked like Lee’s dad, so that was shocking. We arrived, the week prior to this week. They were filming where his dad finds the motorcycle. They stopped filming, it was at night, we had just arrived. John Gunn wanted to introduce us. Robert Forrester was still in character and he came up to Lee and just his hand on him and said, ‘I’m really sorry.’ And Lee never got ‘Sorry’ from his dad. There was never any

reconciliation.

Did that help?Lee: It did help. It was cathartic.

It was totally unexpected, because I didn’t realize he was still in character. To get that from him, it was heartfelt. He’s a very tender man. He plays bad guys a lot in films, but he’s great. He gave everybody a gift of a letter opener on the set, just a sweet, sweet man. But it seemed just unplanned on his part.

Leslie: He said later, ‘I just felt that you needed that.’ It was like ‘Yeah, didn’t realize it but yeah.’ It’s just been an amazing experience.

Lee: To see it on the screen for the first time, it was just amazing.

Leslie: I don’t know how I’m going to get through the premiere. I’ll need a box of tissues.

ANZACS In The Holy Land

“The place of our greatest loss will become the place of our greatest

breakthrough”.A total of 17,723 New Zealanders

served in WWI, in the battle against Ottoman-controlled Palestine from 1916 to 1918. 1,446 were wounded and 640 lost their lives and are buried in the land of Israel. My father’s Uncle Albert was a member of the Waikato Mounted Rifles Ambulance Corp. I can remember, as a young boy, listen-ing to him speak of the hardship of the campaign to free the Holy Land. Many were killed in action and many also lost their lives to malaria. Most were aware, from what he said, that they were in the Holy land, and seemed to understand that God’s plan was some-how unfolding before them.

When the NZ Mounted Rifles ar-rived at El Arish (near modern Niza-na in Israel and the most likely site of the biblical Kadesh Barnea) in 1916, the commander of the New Zealand forces, Brigadier General Edward Chaytor dismounted, took off his hat and kneeled; giving thanks before the Lord that, in his lifetime, he had seen the holy land. He was deeply moved,

even though most of the land was just a barren wilderness at the time. Many died in the days that followed and many were scarred physically and emotionally, in the next 2½ years of hard battle, to gain the prize. The blood of those who died in the land re-mains in the ground to this day. The promise to Abraham in Genesis 12: 3a; “I will bless those who bless you”, is their reward. Many may forget their names but the covenant-keeping God of Israel will never forget their sacri-fice to free the land, in preparation for the miraculous reformation of the land of Israel.

Following monumental battles of ‘biblical’ proportions for Tel El Saba (NZ) and Be’ersheba (Aust) on 31st October, 1917 by various regiments of the Australian Light horsemen and the New Zealand Mounted rifles; the AN-ZAC forces made their way to the Holy City of Jerusalem, experiencing many more battles on the way.

The goal was Jerusalem, and on 9th December, 1917 the Turkish Army surrendered the city unconditionally, to the British Expeditionary forces, which included the ANZACs. On the

11th Decem-ber, 1917 with the Australians on the right and the New Zealanders on the left; a guard of honour was formed for General Allen-by, the British c o m m a n d e r of the Expedi-tionary Forces, as he entered the city of Jerusalem, for the first time, via the Jaffa Road. General Allenby had re-quested this ANZAC guard of honour because he recognized that without the battles of Tel El Saba and Be’er-sheba on the 31st October by the AN-ZACs, Jerusalem would not have fallen so easily.

1917 marked the capture of Jeru-salem by The British Expeditionary Forces, including the ANZACs. Even the day of Jerusalem’s deliverance was recorded in the Bible by the prophet Haggai. He said that, on the 24th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, (which fell on the 9th December in 1917)

YHVH would destroy the strength of the Gentile oppressors.

Haggai 2:20-23 (NKJV): And again the word of the Lord came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of Kislev, saying, “Speak to Zerubbabel, gov-ernor of Judah, saying: ‘I will shake heaven and earth. I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overthrow the chariots and those who ride in them; The horses and their riders shall come down, everyone by the sword of his brother. ‘In that day’, says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says the Lord, ‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have

chosen you’, says the Lord of hosts.”All Hebrew days start at sunset and

in 1917, the 24th Kislev fell at sunset on the 8th December. All through that night, Turkish troops were evacuating the holy city of Jerusalem. By early morning all the Turks had gone and soon after 8am on the 9th December, (24th Kislev) the Ottoman mayor of Jerusalem, under a white flag, surren-dered the keys of the city. The ANZAC forces were part of the action, and it would be two more days on 11th De-cember, before General Allenby final-ly entered the city.

In the two days leading up to Al-lenby’s arrival, a New Zealand Jewish soldier, NZMR Corporal Louis Selak, started what I believe was a prophet-ic timetable to the Messiah’s return. General Allenby had given strict in-structions that no flag be raised in the city until he arrived. However, Corpo-ral Selak had been given a Zionist flag (the modern flag of Israel) by a Jew-ish family in Alexandria, Egypt. He scaled the citadel of David and raised the banner of David (a Messianic sym-bol).This was the first time the banner of David had flown over the City of David for nearly 3,000 years. For two full days the flag flew over the citadel. The actions of Corporal Selak were the fulfilment of the following prophetic word in Isaiah 11:11-12 (NKJV):

“It shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shall set His hand again the second time to recover the rem-

nant of His people who are left, from Assyria and Egypt, from Pathros and Cush, from Elam and Shi-nar, from Ha-math and the

islands of the sea. He will set up a flag for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather togeth-er the dispersed of Judah from the ends of the earth.”

The action of raising a banner by Corporal Selak triggered several waves of Jewish immigration from every cor-ner of the earth following the Balfour declaration, in November 1917 and the formation of the modern state of Isra-el, in 1948. The flag raised by Corporal Selak is still on display in the Citadel Museum in Jerusalem. Many criticise the flag of Israel; but it is the banner of David, representing a powerful Messianic symbol, that many Jews from around the world are assem-bling before. When General Allenby arrived on the 11th December, 1917 he approached the city, up the Jaffa road on a beautiful white horse, with the ANZAC forces forming his ‘guard of honour’. He dismounted, knelt down and declared, “I will not ride into the city. Only the Messiah is worthy to do so.” He entered the city on foot, where he was received with cheers and tears of joy, by the small Jewish population.

In an unusual but highly prophetic twist, a young British soldier (Allen-by’s aide) described in a letter to his mother, (contained in the Auckland Museum) how an unknown Jewish woman came out of the city and ap-proached Allenby, saying with tears, “where are the boys of the Auckland

Mounted Rifles? For they are my sons and I am their mother”. This was a word from God and sealed a prophet-ic link between Jerusalem and New Zealand: A mother from Jerusalem declared that these NZ boys were her sons and she, their mother. Jerusalem adopted us that day. The ANZAC vic-tory set in motion the unstoppable will of the Lord, which will ultimately lead to the second coming of Jesus to rule as King and Messiah in Jerusalem.

In Israel in 2009, we met an Is-raeli man who lives in Be’ersheba, who said: “I don’t understand you ANZACs. There are always spoils of war,” he said. “Britain got all the glo-ry for the liberation of the Holy Land, but you ANZACs just went home. You seem to have no reward.” I believe our reward is yet to come and we will reap our father’s sacrifice in a great end time revival.

Samuel Marsden, an early Chris-tian pioneer in Australia and New Zealand, made this statement: “It is my opinion, that God will before long visit New South Wales (NZ was part of NSW at the time) with His heavenly grace and out of these stones will raise for Himself children unto Abraham. There will be a shaking among the dry bones and the Son of man is com-manding a shaking. I hope, by and by, the Lord will command a wind to blow and stir up his strength amongst us,” (S M Johnstone, Samuel Marsden: A biography).

We are the south wind here in the ANZAC nations and the promise to the dry bones in Ezekiel 37, which Marsden was referring to, is a prom-ise to restore Israel. Marsden had a good understanding of the restoration of Israel as he had trained in London with, and become good friends of, the first Anglican minister to Jerusalem;

a Jewish believer and former Rabbi, named Rev Solomon, who established Christ Church in Jerusalem. The south wind has been blowing since 1917. The bones of Israel have been gathered from every corner of the earth and there is life in the land once again. But Ezekiel was commanded to blow again, so that the Spirit (Ruach haKodesh) would come into the army. The revival, coming to the ends of the earth and the islands of the sea, will bring the double portion of Elisha back to the land of Israel and all the nations of the earth. Once again we will hear in Israel: “Blessed is Yeshua, the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” South wind blow, not as a gen-tle breeze, but as a mighty hurricane of praise to the living God. I join Mars-den in saying, “Come amongst us, Lord. Stir up Thy strength and blow”.

To the ANZACs I say, the job is not yet finished. There is a revival that will come from the ends of the earth, which will, once again cause ANZAC brothers to mount up in unity; to open a way to revival in Israel that will fulfil the word of Jesus when he said: “You will not see me again (speaking to Je-rusalem) until you say, ‘Baruch Haba B’shem Adonai!’” (Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord).

Matthew 23: 37-39 (NKJV): “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one

who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How of-ten I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Government statistics reveal that there has been a significant increase in the numbers of babies

and toddlers in childcare and the length of time they are spending there. Some babies are in daycare longer than a normal working week for adults, yet the government is ignoring the real concerns of whether this is good for very young children and babies.

Please note - I’m not against childcare per se. My own children attended a pre-school for a couple of mornings each week. Every parent needs a break – especially single parents. But the kindergarten model and the Parents Centre model was based on both the best interests of the whole family and the child.

In the discussion on what is best in the area of childcare, let us not forget the children. Has the church asked this question - why do we really want extended periods of childcare for our children?

And don’t be fooled by the labels. In the 70’s it was called ‘child-minding’, the 80’s ‘child-care’, the 90’s ‘early learning centres’, and today it’s ‘early childhood education’. But ultimately, it’s still child-minding.

According to the latest stats, approximately 25% of 0-2 year olds in daycare attend for longer than 30 hours per week, with more than 10% being there longer than 42 hours each week – longer than a 40-hour 8-hours-per-day working week. See table 1.

But the trend over the past decade is also alarming. The proportion of babies and toddlers in long periods of childcare has, on average, tripled since 2000, with the proportion of 0-1 year olds

attending for longer than 42 hours - higher than 3 year olds.

These statistics are concerning. Some babies are spending more time in daycare than primary age children are expected to spend at school when they first start.

With government spending on early childhood education being more than $1.7b per annum, it is essential that the benefits of the investment in ECE are weighed against the real needs of very young children & babies and their families.

Why does the government pay billions for professionals to care for our children, but offer no tax breaks or financial recognition for parents who sacrifice careers and income to do it?

It has been argued that childcare is simply a reflection of changing working patterns and family arrangements. However, it could also be argued that work patterns have changed because of the availability and government subsidising of childcare.

Our 2012 report WHO CARES?: Mothers, Daycare and Child Wellbeing in New Zealand argued that attending daycare for an extended time and the consequent separation from parents is a significant source of stress for many young children which could have potential long-term consequences for their mental and physical health as adults. See diagram 2.

As stated in “WHO CARES?” daycare continues to be evaluated by later child outcomes in terms of ‘skills’ such as language or ‘school readiness’.

But what has proved elusive is an understanding of

how the young child is affected emotionally and physiologically, and how he/she experiences daycare while actually there. Babies can’t speak and toddlers have limited verbal abilities.

However, a new generation of research from the biosciences, is starting to provide an insight into the real-time effects of daycare. These findings are at odds with the information most policymakers and members of the public have been exposed to. Moreover, there is no mention of this evidence, by either the Ministry of Education or the Education Review Office (ERO), which regularly monitors New Zealand’s childcare centres.

There is growing evidence of the profound beneficial neurobiological effects a mother’s physical presence has on her young child that cannot be achieved by anyone else, including paid childcare workers. Mothers have been undervalued, and many parents use daycare because they simply can’t afford not to.

Our babies and toddlers are being used in a massive social experiment and policymakers are too scared to ask the hard questions around whether this is in the best interests of both the child and the family.

As stated in our 2012 report, full-time parenting should be seen as a child’s right, and any discussion of daycare should cease communicating what is ‘assumed’ adults are interested in, and instead, make judgments about what is likely to be in the children’s best interests. New Zealand should also undergo a timely and long overdue re-evaluation of motherhood.

Is the church fighting for this? Or has it been blinded by culture, ideology and perhaps, most invasively, funding?

Pulling resources together for those who are in poverty, while provid-ing quality goods locally, is proving to be a real hit for Orphans Aid.

We are then able to sell the items and turn around and invest more into projects with children and orphans on the streets. It’s a very rewarding area to be involved in.” reports Sue van Schreven, Founder and Chief Ex-ecutive of Orphans Aid.

Orphans Aid is also launching some additional op shops. An extra shop is planned for Dunedin and plans are also in place for a Waikato shop; adding to their current shops in Invercargill, Dunedin, Hawkes Bay and Queenstown.

the news media. Many people have become fearful of Islam and Muslims. Christians can choose how they react to these events. Should our response be one of fear or faith? If faith is our response then we should ask ourselves what does our faith teach us about world events? The Bible is not silent on the subject of evil, wars and calamities. These will increase as the end draws closer. Jesus taught his disciples in Matthew 24 vs 4-14 that false prophets would arise claiming to be the Messiah (vs 4-5), and mislead many during a time of wars and persecution (vs 6-9). His instruction to us was; ‘do not be frightened’ (v6). The Gospels state that many will ignore this teaching, and their faith will grow cold. Strong faith will enable the disciple of Christ to endure (be patient and persevere - Romans 5 vs 1-5) until the end (v13). While all these calamities are taking place ‘this gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a witness to all nations (literally - ‘ethnic people groups’), and then the end shall come’ (v14).

Whether our hearts are filled with fear or faith during these troubling days, depends on whether we trust in God the Father deeply. Scripture reveals to us that God definitely has a plan for the world and He will not be

diverted from accomplishing His mission. The question we face, is will we align our lives by faith with God’s mission and trust Him to be part of His plan? If we have a deep abiding trust in Him we will cease from

worry and fear and express our trust in Him through prayer. Prayer changes things, events and people. In James 5 v 16 it states that ‘the effective fervent prayer of a righteous person can accomplish much.’ What has prayer accomplished in the Muslim world in the last 25 years?

The evidence that prayer is changing our world in these last days can be observed if we study the rise of global prayer movements for Muslims over the last 25 years. By God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s beckoning, millions of Christians are now choosing not to fear but to pray.

Commencing in 1993 one global prayer movement for Muslims have risen from its tiny beginnings to an estimated 1 million people around the world using the ‘30 Days of Prayer’ guide during Ramadan to pray for Muslims in 2016. Ramadan this year is from 27 May - 25 June, 2017 and you can obtain a copy of this prayer guide from MARN at www.marn.org.nz.

In addition to the ramadan prayer movement there is another movement called the ‘Praying for Muslims’ published by Sheikh Abdullah at Pray4Ms@SharifBible.com. This movement prays every Friday, the Muslim holy day, using an effective prayer

booklet featuring a topic, a prayer, and a scripture promise each Friday throughout the year. This prayer booklet is also available from MARN. It empowers effective intercession.

Another prayer movement is Window International Network (WIN) which focusses on praying for the countries of the 10/40 window. It was birthed in the 80’s out of the AD2000 movement and has continued past 2,000 and become an effective mobiliser of prayer for the unreached people of the 10/40 window. The countries in this window are mostly Islamic countries and the prayer needs shared highlight the desperate needs of so many poor and troubled Islamic states and peoples. Christians can subscribe to this prayer network by emailing win@win1040.com.

In the last twenty-five years a rapidly growing movement of Muslims turning to Jesus Christ as a result of dreams, visions and the witness of family members who have encountered Jesus Christ through radio, scriptures and even the redemptive verses about Jesus the

Messiah in the Koran (see K 45 ayah 45-55). Indonesia the most populous Islamic country in the world, and our near neighbour estimates that two million Muslims a year are becoming disciples of Jesus Christ. At this phenomenal rate Indonesia could be a majority Christian country by 2035. In 1977 the percentage of Christians in Indonesia was less that one percent, and half of this number were Roman Catholic, and half were protestants. Typical Indonesian churches today are notably marked by well attended daily prayer meetings because the converts from Islam filling the churches expect to pray several times every day. Every week pastors encounter people coming to them asking for the interpretation of dreams they are having about Jesus Christ and angels. Iran is experiencing a similar phenomenon as recorded in the book by Mark Bradley ‘Too many to Jail’.

Islam: The global prayer movementwith BAPAK PENGAJAR ROHANI

A group of Gisborne Christians are organising a march on Easter Monday to highlight the growing meth addiction problem in their region.

They are gathering at the Marina in Gisborne 9.30am on Monday 17th April. Opening with karakia/prayer by Richard Rangihuna and speech by Mayor Meng Foon, the march will head along Peel St to Gladstone road, along Wainui Rd and Delatour Rd to Saint David’s Church Hall. A Blessing and opening of the walk in centre for meth users and families will take place. The support centre will provide information, booklets, help resources and free detox packages offering alternative healing methods and prayer.

The main thrust of the March is to highlight and promote the urgent need of an addiction rehab centre Gisborne. Methamphetamine use in the East Coast area has soared to epidemic proportions just as it has spread through-out New Zealand.
