TRANSCRIPT
For Aubrey Daniel, a teacher resident of Project Inspire, her first year has been full of challenge
and reward. Aubrey is backed by a mentor, a network of coaches, and a cohort of residents, as she
works in one of our city’s most challenged schools. Project Inspire reduces teacher turnover to
allow students to succeed while providing invaluable experience for its residents.
Aubrey strives to maintain a steady environment for her students which began with emulating
her mentor, Lora Aycock. Aubrey knew that from day one, Lora’s first priority was to create a safe
space; an environment that honors consistency.
Like many of the residents, Aubrey reserves a portion of the day for restorative practices, allowing
her students to decompress, talk with one another, and meet one another’s needs. She says, “My goal
is that they would feel equipped not only in academics, but as human beings as well.”
Aubrey also realizes one of the biggest ways to affect change is open communication with her
students and their families. She hopes to build a rapport with each of the parents, and not just when
a student is in trouble. She works to show parents that they have a counterpart; someone dedicated to
their son or daughter’s success.
Aubrey remarks, “The most rewarding moment is the turning point for a student that realizes they
can succeed; that they have the ability to overcome stereotypes, and can choose the kind of person
they want to be.”

Kentrell Evans, a senior at Brainerd High School, is well on his way after a paid internship with
Chattem through STEP-UP Chattanooga. Kentrell worked in departments ranging from Microbiology
to Quality Assurance to Product Development, leading him to pursue a degree in chemistry.
Kentrell had always been intrigued by chemistry, but wasn’t sure what kind of jobs could benefit
from his skill set. During his internship, he interacted with staff from a variety of departments, as
he was ever present in the lab.
Through this experience, Kentrell notes that he was able to defy expectations while refining his
skills. “No one tells you that basketball and chemistry go together. I’m on track to play at Lee
University, so I could have been doing that, but I wanted to spend my summer focused on chemistry.”
He was also moved by an immense sense that his peers and managers at Chattem were looking
out for him. Even now, they stay in touch and many Chattem colleagues regularly attend his
games. In asking them what advice they’d give a senior, Kentrell found one consistent theme:
“Don’t be afraid of the unknown.”
After considering his options, Kentrell has decided to pursue a chemistry degree and will begin
at Lee University in the fall. In addition to being in the top 10% of his class at Brainerd High, he is
receiving an athletic scholarship to play basketball. He’s been motivated after his internship to
take every opportunity to grow his professionalism, as he looks to interact with people of
various backgrounds.

Throughout her eight years as a librarian, three of those at Red Bank Elementary, Cristol Kapp has
been at the forefront of the maker space movement in Chattanooga. Kapp participated in the first
Teacherprenuer incubator in 2014.
Cristol is thrilled at the plan to expand maker spaces into other Hamilton County schools through
VW eLabs, knowing the positive effects for students at the elementary and middle school age. Maker
spaces create freedom by offering unique materials like Legos, robotics, and 3D printing—meaning
students have unlimited options to adapt and think critically.
Early on, students learn to improve in communication as they share ideas. They negotiate with one
another and find creative solutions, developing soft skills in small groups of 5 or 6. Not only that, but
students are encouraged with no fear, to fail and start again.
In one of Cristol’s recent maker spaces, a team of students in 4th- 8th grade was tasked with creating
a new design for STEM-focused playground equipment. For three months, the students chose to
miss recess three days a week to complete their masterpiece. From start to finish, they conducted the
research, ideated, then presented their proposal to a playground equipment company in Chattanooga.
“It’s no small thing that VW has chosen to invest in our local economy by equipping the next
generation of problem solvers in our workforce. The most magical part of this is that the kids get
to participate in the entrepreneurial spirit that Chattanooga holds so close.”
The first VW eLabs are set to open in 2017.
